  1. Eh. Define "Subaru shop." They say they've swapped Subie transmissions before. They have a '04 STi they're putting a FMIC & fuel mods into. They have a Mustang AWD dyno. I guess it's a Subaru shop, I dunno. I'm beginning to wonder.
  2. I don't know. But I'm here at the shop, just took it for a ride--no good. Same noise. Fortunately I've got a guy with a spare truck that owes me a favor. F*K ME.
  3. I'll find out in about an hour, I hope.
  4. Yep, stock. Stripped castle nut on the right side.
  5. OK--shop says ball joints. Parts arrive tomorrow, installed by 2pm. My question is this: how does a 2009 with 44,000 miles have bad ball joints? Does this more or less point to poor installation on the part of the shop?
  6. The shop couldn't get another car off the lift today, so mine never made it up. They tell me they rolled it around in 1st with the hood open to listen for noise. They say it's behind the firewall & under the car, so they're going with driveshaft... but they need to get it into the air to find out. I'm pissed. 50 miles round trip for my wife to bring me to work today. 50 miles to pick me up tonight, and looks like another 50 tomorrow morning.
  7. Me too. Definitely sounds like something getting gradually looser. I didn't check the coilovers for tightness, and it would explain the noise if one were moving around.
  8. That was one of the first things I checked when I started hearing the noise when tapping the brakes. I've had that happen on a motorcycle before, and recognized the behavior. Nope. All calipers are tight. The shop has the car. They said that it's on the rack & they're looking at it. I'm carless until they tell me something more, so they'd better have news by 5pm.
  9. I have coilovers. I brought it by the shop yesterday because of the intermittent knock... unrelated to cornering, bumps, or accel/decel. I could turn back & forth in a parking lot with no troubles, only to have it knock (loud) on a flat section. The one that surprised me was heading back to the shop, 5mph, in neutral on completely flat ground with the clutch out, *knock*. I decided I'd go home & drop it off today. However, on the subsequent 15 miles going home, it got worse & worse, and eventually knocked over every bump and every time I tap the brakes. I have a flatbed coming. I can't keep messing with this car. It needs to be fixed. I went with the 6MT as a replacement for the obviously f*ked up 5MT. The 6MT shifts great. Until this knock, it was suddenly so quiet to drive. From reading this thread, I had hoped it would be a bolt-on fix for my failing transmission, but now I've got a new problem.
  10. OK... anyone have ideas on what a persistent front-end knock would be? 2010 STi transmission, 2009 LGT, OEM axles. 24 hours on the swap. On the way home, I had the tech listen. He figured some binding in the driveshaft or front axles... I told him I'd drop it off tomorrow. On the way home, it got worse. Knocks over every bump. Knocks every time I tap the brakes. Knocks on turns. I put it on jack stands, moved the wheels lock-to-lock... Tried to jiggle everything. RSB, end links tight. Control arms tight. Axles jiggle a little. Not in & out so much, and just a little bit. Dropped it & rolled it forward, and it knocked again in the first inch or so. No ideas. Not sure I want to drive it to the shop or anywhere else. I'm inches from selling this car. 44k miles on it & nothing but problems in the 18 months/12k-ish miles I've owned it. I thought the 6-speed was the answer to my final problems, but more keep cropping up.
  11. I did my own. Reverse lights work, and the reverse light lead triggers the cam display on the head unit. It's probably just an unhooked wire. Thanks for the tip on the shifter! I'll play with it next weekend.
  12. That's where I got mine for the 5MT. May need a new one for the 6MT.
  13. Picked up my car tonight & drove it home. First impressions... WOW. Incredible. Snappy shifts on the stock STi shifter. And QUIET. I knew my tranny was making noises, but I had no idea how loud it was before it was gone. The tech used the 5MT harness and sensors. Cruise control works. Reverse lights work. My cobbled reverse cam doesn't work in reverse, although my "reverse cam button" works fine. My USB charger for my iPhone doesn't work... but since those are both my doing, I'm sure they just screwed it up in the swap. I can't blame them for that. Issues: my used 4EAT driveshaft has a loose bit of metal inside. It sounds like jingle bells at speeds under 10mph with the windows down. I checked with my supplier but haven't heard back yet on a refund for the shaft. I'm mainly worried about imbalance, but I don't have any evidence of that yet. I also have a new clunk in the front right, but haven't gotten under the car to have a look yet. It may just be an endlink. They couldn't install the Cobb 6MT shifter because the reverse lockout cable was "too short." I'm going to play with it to see if I can get it to work. In the meantime, the stock height is obnoxious, and the 5MT shift boot for my STS is flopping around loose. Looks goofy. Cost: $4200 for 2010 STi tranny, shift linkage & shifter, clutch, R160 diff, 4EAT driveshaft $50 for shift knob $95 for six quarts of Extra-S $740 for labor Total = $5085, unless I've left something out. I still have to part out my 5MT bits.
  14. OK... I've got $7,644, does that sound about right?
  15. The biggest upside that I can see is that my transmission will be less likely to detonate in the near future...!
  16. Please post this in the "5EAT Master Swap thread." Oh... wait a minute...
  17. That would be nice, but any 6MT would be an improvement. If what I posted is correct, even the 08+ STi transmission provides a wider range from 1-6 than the Legacy manual does from 1-5. That's not the case with the earlier STi 6MT's, IIRC.
  18. So, new gear ratios, as I understand them, will be: OLD:___________New:_______ _______________1st - 3.636 1st - 3.166_______________ _______________2nd - 2.235 2nd - 1.882_______________ _______________3rd - 1.521 3rd - 1.296_______________ _______________4th - 1.137 4th - 0.972_______________ _______________5th - 0.971 5th - 0.780_______________ _______________6th - 0.756 I used this fancy table I found on a Jeep site, and calculated the following: Combined ratios (old 4.11 FD, new 3.90 FD): OLD:___________New:_______ _______________1st - 14.18 1st - 13.01_______________ _______________2nd - 8.72 2nd - 7.74_______________ _______________3rd - 5.93 3rd - 5.33_______________ _______________4th - 4.43 4th - 3.99_______________ _______________5th - 3.79 5th - 3.21_______________ _______________6th - 2.95 Calculated speed in MPH at 3,000 RPM with 225/40/18 tires: OLD:___________New:_______ _______________1st - 16 1st - 17_______________ _______________2nd - 26 2nd - 29_______________ _______________3rd - 38 3rd - 42_______________ _______________4th - 51 4th - 56_______________ _______________5th - 59 5th - 70_______________ _______________6th - 76 Does that all sound about right?
  19. Here's a guy in AZ on NASIOC selling an '05 6-speed for cheap: Link
  20. I only have the "as shipped" photos Frank sent me (previously posted in this thread, I think)... and they're not great: http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/08/27/4enuve5y.jpg http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/08/27/azera4ez.jpg I should have taken some at the shop yesterday.
  21. Parts are here! Mount is attached to the tranny. Diff has lots of surface rust. Driveshaft has seen better days, but everything's here, including shifter bits & clutch. Tranny itself looks great... it should, it's a 2011. Counting down... at least I know that if my 5MT fails in the next couple of weeks, I have an out...
  22. Tranny arrives today. The mounts are not the same, so I've pinged a few sellers on NASIOC just in case the mount isn't in the package.
  23. I don't know if Frank included the mount, which is why I'm asking. If I can get dimensions, I'll figure it out. I have an OEM 5MT mount sitting around somewhere.
