  1. Put a punch on the edge of the A-arm and "tap" each side back and forth with a hammer until the ball joint releases... Anyone have a picture of the transmission side retaining clip? That's the big unknown to me right now and I don't want to mess up the tranny seal only to do this again... Can the axle be removed with the clip on or does it have to come off first?
  2. This is just a repost as they still appear to work, I should have fake baked back in 2005, man I'm white! http://people.csail.mit.edu/ilh/vacation/
  3. I have some pictures of my fat ass in '05 if that would turn your crank?
  4. The links to the 1998 vacation pix appear to be dead... After that your wife put on too much weight for me, I'm looking for the pics when the kids were 2 and 5 and you all lived in a double-wide still.
  5. Doh, sorry, created my own post for this when it should have gone here... 6. What specifically are you logging to show it makes no difference? Unless you can log IAT in each end tank, as well as pressure on each side of the intercooler you can't say definitively that it's the same cover on or cover off. There is nothing in the engine management that measures efficiency of the intercooler. The engine cover provides a direct seal against the intercooler, with it off air can follow the path of least resistance. Probably one of the reasons the bottom cover is there as well...
  7. With the engine cover off you lose pressure on the front of the intercooler possibly not forcing air through it... I did a little more "sealing" after reading this article... interesting reading... http://autospeed.com/cms/A_109440/article.html Jist of the article: "Outside air will only flow through the intercooler core if there is a higher pressure on one face than the other. In other words, there needs to be a pressure differential across the core before any air movement through the core will occur. So the fact that there’s a forward-facing scoop over the intercooler, and that the air pressure builds up on one face (as described above) is actually not the real point. It’s quite easy to have a forward-facing scoop that connects to the intercooler, but to still not have any flow through the intercooler – or to even have a backwards flow, where hot air from under the bonnet passes out through the intercooler!"
  8. Whoa, good information... you'd think they could have done less than 20 clicks and unclicks to disable it though, that is a lot...
  9. Is the illumination connection related to the wiring for the cigarette lighter and ashtray somehow? Here is why I ask.... I had this hooked up and all worked fine... one night I pulled the stereo and the button lights on the wheel stopped working... Great, I think, I must have messed with the wire on the stereo... Pull the console and I forgot to plug the lighter plug back in... Plug that in and it all works fine... Works for a few weeks, plug in my cell phone one night and the lights on the steering wheel quit working... unplug it and shut the car off, still no workie... let the car sit for a few minutes, bingo, working again... Seems odd to me, but also a little too much of a coincidence to not be related... does power on the ashtray/lighter light have any being on the illumination for the wheel as hooked up in this FAQ?
  10. Part numbers for turbo to downpipe bolts? I've found if you reuse them they more than likely have been stretched from heat cycling and will continually loosen up even if torqued properly...
  11. I can definitely see this argument too, if you are going to do the mod eventually, why not do it right away and get the most enjoyment out of it...
  12. Yikes! That is a big list! I have two pieces to add... 1) Everyone I know that "went big" all at once ended up with a car down for years and eventually parting it all out and selling it off... I can't think of one person that was successful with the all-at-once approach, or they completed the car and then had to sell it right away because they were broke. The task, money, and time all become overwhelming... 2) Do a staged approach... the money you put in to it seems less painful and you get to enjoy each little mod longer.. stock power feels fast at first, then you get used to it, but make a change and the car feels fast again, but then you get used to that and need more... even a fast car will feel dog slow once you get used to it... spread it out and make the euphoria last longer...
  13. Just did this... many kudos to the pioneers who paved the way!!!! Couple of things I thought were weird: In my '05 this wire was blue.. there was a purple one, but that didn't work. thanks to the awesome pictures it was easy to figure out, knowing it was simply the top wire on that side of the radio plug. Same with the black, I had two solid blacks and just chose the one right under the blue one like in the picture, worked like a charm! Here again I had some weirdness, but thanks to the awesome pictures and great diagram it was easy enough... #6 was white #7 was the green with red stripe Maybe the original description wasn't met respectively? Thanks to trabbic and everyone else for all of their hard work figuring it out, made it a super easy hour and 20 min install!
  14. Was doing some pricing tonight as I'm looking to do the Spec B radio in my '05.... some of the vendors have great prices, but steep shipping costs, how heavy is this radio? Is it 90% mercury? 86201AG67A - Spec B Radio http://www.1stsubaruparts.com - $424.60 + 63.69 shipping (15%) = 488.29 http://www.subaruparts.com - $449.36 + 91.03 shipping = 540.39 Anyone know of anywhere better to find it? I've exhausted all the links I could find in several threads....
