  1. One of the bolts snapped on the right timing belt cover but I was able to see in and it seemed like the timing belt was running smooth. This video is from a cold start, can't really pick it up on the microphone until I blip the throttle around 2:30. https://youtu.be/HIn2ZkIoeKM This is another 25 seconds of it running after warming up. https://youtu.be/XxjhZ0kjRXY Sounds like it's coming from under the intercooler to me. Friend said it sounded like an exhaust leak but wouldn't that get quieter as it warmed up not louder?
  2. I have some time tomorrow so going to see what I can get myself into. At least get a good look at the oil and try to determine where the noise is coming from with a stethoscope. If I sell it or not I'd like to figure out what's going on with it. Thanks for the input everyone. This place has so much information, just wish I had the tools and experience to put it to use.
  3. Yea that's why I'm most likely selling it. I can change the oil and do simple maintenance but right now don't even have the space to do that. Already purchased another vehicle and with winter fast approaching the legacy would have to be stored. I just don't want it to turn into a money pit. Just breaks my heart seeing it sit there. The bolts on the timing belt cover are rusted to hell but I may take a shot away them today.
  4. That does sound very similar to what I'm hearing.
  5. Yea they said it's worth around 2.5k but changed their mind, said they weren't interested but have a few people's numbers if we sell. So damn confusing. I did not see the shavings. Never had a check engine light.
  6. I'd rather not pull it apart to diagnose but this is what I was told, they couldn't give me a proper quote without doing that. I have barely any mechanical knowledge so I'm just going by that. Rick's Auto in Torrington Ct is the shop who said they pulled the pan and found metal shavings. They also said the bolts for the timing belt were never touched. They didn't charge me anything, car was there for a week. They also said it really isn't worth fixing. Car was purchased from Abate Auto in Torrington, they did an oil change a week before it started so when the noise happened the car went there immediately. They told me $500 to diagnose.
  7. It is definitely something that gets louder as it warms up. When first started you can't hear it at all.
  8. Where is that located in the engine bay? Sounds loudest on the left side about mid way back.
  9. It sounds like it's coming from the left side about halfway back. One shop said it sounds like valve/lifter issues. Other said they dropped the pan and found metal shavings and believed the rod bearing was done. Both shops quoted me around $500 to tear down and properly diagnose. Most likely going to sell it because I just can't get in too deep right now.
  10. Started it for the first time in about 2 weeks. Took some pictures and this video https://youtu.be/vAzXYsptF4w. Any ideas on what it might be?
  11. Supposedly the timing belt was done right before purchase 8-9k ago. Doubting that now because one shop said it doesn’t look like it was ever done. When first started the noise is silent but gets louder as it warms up.
  12. Had all the local shops tell me around $500 to tear it apart and diagnose. I just need something reliable and from what I've heard this won't be it. I love the car and would rather not sell it, only bought it a year ago and put 8-9k on it. I just can't drop 3-5k into it only to have something else go in a few months. https://youtu.be/vAzXYsptF4w
  13. Putting her up for sale. Tried posting in the car sales section here but wasn't allowed. Anyone know why?
  14. Thanks for the input everyone. I picked the car up but still not sure what's going on with it. The wife and I are thinking we're going to sell it and get something a bit more reliable for the family. With winter closing in we need 2 vehicles on the road. Breaks my heart but going to get some pictures and video together and see what we can get for it.
  15. I actually watched that video last night, the car doesn't really sound like that. There is no heavy clunking or knocking, sounds more like a tick that seems to come and go.
  16. Yea the forester is NA, haven't taken a look at it but he was talking it up. Is rod bearing failure something that would come and go? The noise would be worse at times but other times I couldn't hear it.
  17. Yea I'm pretty sure that's the shop I brought the car to, I can send the name in PM if you want. They are trying to make me a deal for a 2008 Forester. There is a high performance shop on the edge of town that builds monsters. I was thinking about going in there and trying to get an opinion from those guys. Reading through that build is really impressive, way above my knowledge or skill set though.
  18. I'm located in Torrington. So far no oil or check engine light has came on, the oil was changed about 100 miles before the ticking started. Car is currently still in the shop so won't be able to pick it up until Monday. Shop said there was metal flakes in the oil but I personally never saw it. A friend of mine said the ticking sounded like valves/lifters before it went to the shop but I have no idea. Thanks for the help everyone. I'm getting a feeling this shop wants the car.
  19. Located in Ct. Definitely don't have the tools or know how for the tear down so would have to find a shop. This place even offered to have me test drive a different vehicle when I go in Monday. Just doesn't sit right with me. Edit: Also the ticking seemed loudest at idle and seemed to smooth out around 2500 rpm. Also after the car sat for a few days it didn't make the noise after driven for about a mile. Not sure if ticking caused by a rod bearing would come and go? Also at what point would someone expect the engine light to come on when a rod bearing fails?
  20. I own a stock 2006 Legacy GT with 123k on it. Was driving it last week and noticed a ticking sound coming from the engine so I parked it and had it towed to the shop. The engine light never came on but the ticking was definitely noticeable. The shop called today and stated it was rod bearing failure and is going to cost around 9k for a new motor. They said it wasn't worth fixing but said someone else had seen the car sitting there and wanted to make an offer on it. Another shop quoted me $500 to tear down and diagnose. My head is just spinning right now. It is a beautiful car, only put 8k miles on it since the purchase 13 months ago. What would you guys do in this situation? Take it to another shop and get a second opinion? Tear down the motor and diagnose? Sell it? Any advice will be appreciated.
