Teh DM's KSport Coilover Review

Drift Monkey

Recommended Posts

First off...sorry for taking so long to post a review...I actually got these in last Thursday, and I've been out of town (in Dallas) over the weekend so I'm still tinkering, testing and installing more parts (and getting hurt) everyday..

That said, let's get to the pictures/impressions!

I picked up the package at DHL and rushed home to open it up, inside I found

A free t-shirt!

Underneath I caught my first glance of the orangy goodness:

Upon closer inspection, these things are of really good quality, very solid. I liek the sparkly orange paint they picked for the strut housings. :p

The kit comes with standard coilvoers wrenches (2), dampner adjustment rods (4), and brake lines brackets (4 but only 2 are used).

Also included was a warranty card and small brochure.

As for the install itself...everything went smoothly everything bolted up correctly, hell, I didn't even get hurt...weird! Adjustability was straightforward and after doing some calculations with Keefe, I seated the spring and added a bit of preload (approx. 50lbs) to ensure the spring was good and tight. The brake line brackets were "u-bend-it" universal style, but weren't too bad to bend in place. I used orange JDM zip ties (not included) to secure the brake lines and abs sensors.

Front strut installed:

Front driver's side pillow ball top mount w/adjustable camber.

As for how I have them adjusted now...I have the struts around 50% stiff all the way around and the ride is still pretty comfy. I had them at full soft the first day, but I found that they become a little under dampened at that setting...it's sitting just around 50-60% right now after some tinkering. As for ride height...I wanted to see how low I could get away with...so I have about a pinky finger gap all the way around. I did get some rub with the strut on full soft (only on the front driver side)...but I dialed in maximum front negative camber (which, suprisingly, isn't that much, I thought they'd go further) and turned up the shocks and hardly ever have rubbed since, even with passengers. That said, I still think I'm going to raise it 1/4"-1/2" to get a bit more suspension travel and leave a bit more clearence for my setup. The rears I have set at the lowest they can go and I have only got 1 rub with 2 passengers in the rear with the struts on full soft. I haven't had once since turning the shocks up. Do note that most of you, even at this height, probably WOULD NOT rub, and the main reason I am rubbing is due to my +45 offset and huge tires.

^ Sorry about the crappy pics...I really need to get around to taking daytime shots....been kind of busy (installed a Perrin RSB last night and those subframe brackets are a bitch and a half! ) ...but these pics really don't do the car justice....

Maybe I can take some pics today (if my Cusco rear lower arm bar install goes smooth, with my luck...no)

Driving impressions please.

Tom

Well, as I said before...they are quite comfortable....even for our older members, so long as it's at the correct dampening level...;) It's firmer and a tad harsher than stock, but nothing unlivable...

As for cornering....the car stays very, very flat and corner entry/exit stability feels much better. Turn in response is greatly improved, and I think this is due to the solid metal tophats.

I'll likely post more impressions once I raise the car up a bit...

Sux...I just turned 32 this weekend :(

...and I'm constantly here...now the wifey and I fight over the computer

I still don't see how you rubbed at stock height with the same offset wheels with skinnier tires. My rear never rubs even at this height! Hmm....

^^^I had 225/40/18 on 18x8.0 with 46 offset...pretty similar to yours right?...I have to turn UP (not very inclined at all) this driveway at an angle (can't drive straight up) and I always have to stop at about 45 degrees, get out of the car, open the gate, and always check for clearance when I get out of the car...it's like 5mm clearance (with no one in the car) on the rear tires...I think I've rubbed when I was driving home with the factory wheels (rims and tires) and my wifey....I know it wasn't my wife cuz she weighs like 100lbs :D
In Taiwan now...:spin:

Well...I have 225/40/18 Azenis RT-615...not exactly a "true" 225 series tire (closer to 245). That and you have a 1mm extra on me (I'm on 45). The only thing I can think of is the rear weather strip thingy....but I never rubbed that, even at stock height...

Must be some crazy ass build tolerances at the SOA Illinois plant!

shipped from?

and how long do you expect them to last before anything needs replaced? are you also doing all your bushings?

Shipped from AZ. They should last a while before needing to be rebuilt, or so I'm told. The coilvoers come with new, metal bushings in the rear.

No creaking noise as far as I can hear...

Did you them from http://www.elementmotorsport.com? They are advertising free shipping over $100 and that they will beat any Ksport price. Just wondering since they are in AZ....I think Jinsu is out of MI.

Man i want those things! Please post more driving impressions when you get the chance.
