Brake hardware for squeaky brake pads

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know where i can buy oem brake shims and brake clips? Ordered some oem quality shims, but ended up only getting one shim vs the double oem shim. Also can't find any of the clips that the pads ride on. Called the dealer and they want 120 because pads come included in the kit, and say they don't sell them separately. Tried other online pays dealers who sell oem parts and they only sell the pins separately but hardware kit comes with pads for as low as 90 dollars.

Reason I'm looking for OEM pays its because i keep getting vibrational squeaking of the passenger side front brake. I take them apart weekly, noise goes away but a week later its back. I make sure to lube pins, lube the clips, as anti squeak on the back of the pad between the shim.

Brake fluid seems fine, could it be air in the caliper?

Also, not looking to replace pads or rotors as they were just replaced with oem gear at the dealer before i bought it 1.5k miles ago.

If the dealer replaced the pads and rotor 1.5k miles ago, then it should be under the Subaru Dealer warranty of 12mo/12k miles included with all work done by dealers.

If one front pad is squeaking, I would think that it may be a seized up caliper, especially if you say you are lubing the sliders and what not.

after the initial push on the pistons i can press both pistons in by hand so I wouldn't think that anything is seized. Both sides take same amount of pressure to press in. Had the same issue on my other legacy even after two new front calipers. Its a vibrating squeak, gets louder when i press the brakes lightly(same rhythm of squeak) and then goes away once i press on the pedal harder.

Thats most likely a shim issue. I would get a set of good pads (Stoptech Street Performance or Hawk HPS) and call it a day.

Buy your pads from Mike, I have Hawk HPS on my 09, they are nice but dusty, I have Hawk Ceramic's on my 05 and they are very clean.

Figure about $60.00 to re-surface the rotors.

What's the guarantee for no squeaking though? Lots of online research seems to be 50/50 on it working with new pads and rotors. Not looking to throw money at the problem at the moment.

There are no guarantees with so many different components being involved.

I would tell you to bring it to a subaru specialist (not a dealer) and have them help investigate it.

So i take it no one sells OEM hardware without the expensive OEM pads? I was going to put in new hardware and shims and if that didn't solve it then take it to the specialist. But I'm not one to run to the mechanic (did head gaskets myself on my other lgt, rebuilt heads, replaced burnt valves timing, etc.)

Nope you only get the hardware with the oem pads, at least all the dealers we deal with on parts. The hawk and stoptech have built in shims that are adhered to the backing plate.

The part numbers for the shims and clips are listed separately, but there is also the kit P/N that contains the brake pads.

(Not trying to step on any toes here Mike/AZP...)

No worries. :)

  • 2 weeks later...
Found the issue, the clips that the pads slide on are it. After a while of water and rain and the fact that their slotted gets rid of all lubrication on top of the pads. In return they stick and vibrate. Took them off, lubed the upper portion of the pads only and the squeak has been gone for days. Wish the top ones didnt have those stupid slots and only bottoms did.
