Does the overhang lower the tow rating for your fancy trailer?

The short answer is no, but there's a lot more to the story...

The overhang requires a hitch extension, and those generally decrease tongue weight capacity by 50%... major problem. After a bunch of research, I ended up with a Torklift Superhitch, and their SuperTruss extension. Basically, a heavy duty, 2nd hitch that bolts on under the stock hitch, giving you two receivers. The SuperTruss is a double extension, and with a weight distributing system still has a 12k/1.2k rating with my application, which covers my trailer, which has a GVWR of 9900.

Here's an idea of what it looks like:

$$$, but the only way I could get to my end goal. After looking at numerous campers, SWMBO and I came to the conclusion that one with a slide out was what we wanted, and they all have overhangs, so this was really the only solution that got us where we wanted to be.

The other nice thing is that it's robust enough that I can put a motorcycle carrier on it, and haul my bike without having to use a trailer.

Nice to know there are some good working solutions to the overhang now. Back when I was a kid my parents wanted a new camper but they were mostly overhangs and it basically meant we'd be unable to tow our boat behind so we just stuck with the older one.

Thank goodness for the internet... if I hadn't done my homework it could have been ugly.

The dealer we bought the camper from was clueless. Didn't know sh*t that wasn't in the Lance brochure. But, I'm sure they make a lot of $$ selling suspension upgrades to people after the fact...

Hopefully we'll be back to some Miata content here soon... :p

I just had to order some more parts to replace the wrong parts I was originally sent. I hope to button up the new motor this weekend, and start on cleaning the engine bay...

We're already signed up for FM Summer Camp, and now we're equipped for camping at Miatas at MRLS, so I need to get my ass in gear and get the cars prepped! :D

Finally some Miata content...

Got the motor 99% buttoned back up.... not a lot of progress, but it's been apart for over a month, so it feels like something. Valve cover on, pullies on, except I'm waiting for ARP M6 bolts for the flywheel pulley. Injectors back on with new o-rings, and the NA6 regulator on an NB1 fuel rail.

Note the lack of thermostat neck, due to the coolant reroute. I decided to leave the front covers for now. I may remove them later and cut a cam cover for the racerboy look.

Rear thermostat buttoned down...

Note there's not a lot of room for the sensor plug to get past the VVT oil pipe. It does fit...

What's really going to be tight is getting a hose over the thermostat neck...

Still need to clean the intake manifold, and reinstall it, and the exhaust header, but once that's done, it'll about be ready for install....

A co-workers boosted flyin' miata 10AE. It's pretty freakin' sweet looking IMHO.

That's the Autokonexion (sp?) fastback.

Expensive, and their customer service is abysmal... very long waits, delays, won't return calls, etc. according to many accounts.

A local guy had one on an NB, and it does look great, but you also loose some trunk functionality, and it's not readily removable, so goodbye roadster. If you always wanted a Miata coupe, it's pretty slick.

Here's a couple pics of the car that was local to me. He had just primered it flat black, but it still looked pretty good on silver...

There's another guy I'm acquainted with in Phoenix that bought one, but I don't think he ever mounted it on the car. He waited something like a year and a half to get it...

I keep thinking about getting the Tyrant Fabrication winged top, but not sure I want a lexan rear window or want to lose the defroster.

For a street car, I'd stick with a factory style hardtop. Even the Snugtop I've got is a little iffy on fit. A lexan window would definitely suck, especially for a DD.

For track use, if you have any intention of doing any serious aero, I think that top would just screw up the airflow to a rear wing...

If you just like the look, I think there are a couple sources for a similar lip for stock hardtops.

My biggest question is willing it make it track legal without a roll hoop

Considering most sanctioning groups won't accept the NC PRHT, I'm guessing it won't be. And looking at the design, it's going to be tricky to fit one. The ND bars out there now are very narrow just to fit under the soft top...

IMHO, it's missing the best qualities of a true convertible, and it's also missing the best qualities of a coupe. The NC PRHT is a great compromise, but with this, you just get a targa, which would have been a lot easier if they just made a manually removeable targa top, and a retracting window. Lighter simpler, and probably could have made the back end look better, and had enough structure to be track legal.

Having had a targa in the past (C6 'Vette), I wasn't impressed and rarely removed it. Our Miatae have been much more enjoyable for top down driving.

They should have just made it a coupe.
