compsurge
I've never taken one off, but I think there are crevices that can't be seen (and thus verified as clean). http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1912522 Get a new one. Don't ruin your engine. Buy from Heuberger. They're in Colorodo Springs. volodyalysak
One more thing, i checked timing belt and all pulleys on my car, seems like they have been replaced recently, still debating if i should get new timing belt and tensioners, or just leave it like that, it just another 300$ + that i don't want to spend right now. compsurge
The belt might be cheap. If it looks good, I'd keep it for now. BTW, do not use it if you used it to get the cams out the first time using the vise grip method.
UTwrestler22
$300 over the span of an engine life isnt worth it to you? Are you freakin kidding me?! Everyone here is telling you get a brand new engine. Shouldnt that be a sign?! Good luck. Ill be watching this thread and i hope this is one of your trustworthy good friends..... compsurge
http://www.infamousperformance.net/servlet/the-73/Gates-Racing-Subaru-Timing/Detail If you have any questions on the belt, replace it. You can keep the pulleys. They are likely good for 200k, but cheaper to replace with the belt due to labor costs.
volodyalysak
I inspected the belt, it looks good, no signs of wear at all, all pulleys look new, my mechanic said all timing components still good to reuse , and then 30-40 K miles later will just replace all together. Max Capacity
At least replace the belt. It's about $70.00 over the life of the interference fit engine... you do the math... 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. (SOLD). I Donated thefultonhow Posted November 18, 2012 I Donated Share Posted November 18, 2012 I would replace everything. It's going to cost you over $300 in labor the next time around, anyway. Why not make it so you won't have to replace anything for another 105k?

Why not make it so you won't have to replace anything for another 105k? Hey, that's what I did, why would you tell someone else to do it right the first time. Oh, yea, you should replace the oil crossover tube and hoses and heater hoses too. I understand money is tight, but how long do you plan on keeping the car ? remember winter time is coming... 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. volodyalysak
I will replace it, just not right now, 2-3 month later, same price later anyway. And i'm planing to keep the car for next 2-3 years, btw i already spent 3 K on engine work suspension and other stuff that needed to be fixed. volodyalysak
Got my car running, not pushing it hard at all, 4K rpm the most. Will do oil change at 500 miles and 1000 and then 3500 miles as usual. Just put in regular 5w30, will go full synthetic after break in. So far have 200+ miles on new block. I Donated thefultonhow Posted November 26, 2012 I Donated Share Posted November 26, 2012 Agreed. EJ257's are cheaper, and they're STI blocks hahaha. And if the wife says that "Oh, $1,700, the car's just eating money, we need to sell it for $5,000 with a blown engine and pick up a $25,000 new car instead!!!"... remind her that the car with a new engine is in many ways just as good a new car Good luck with the rebuild! volodyalysak
My mechanic says we going to change oil 2 times before 1 K mark on engine.. don't know why but i don't mind if that is going to prolong engine life somehow.
frank_ster
haha well he is being extra carefull. but if its done right it doesnt matter. new gms are good for 5000 miles on the first oil ! It's pretty common to change the oil after the 20 minute warm up, after 500 miles, then after another 1000 miles, then after another 1500 miles. Then start your normal OCI. I've been doing that since the 1970's. 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. (SOLD). CHECK your oil, these cars use it. BoozeRS05
Yeah, I'd to with a very short interval of 20 miles, then 500 miles, then 1500 miles, then normal 3k mile intervals on a new motor. volodyalysak
Ok, so it is normal procedure, by the way i want to flash my stock ECU, i have a tactrix cable, should i do it after first 1000 miles ? Or it is ok to flash the map now ?
compsurge
If the car is stock, run the stock tune. If it's not (downpipe, etc.), run the custom tune.
Max Capacity
You have the cable, may want to contact Mike at http://legacygt.com/forums/forumdisplay.php/tuning-alliance-121.html and have him send you a Map that you can flash into the ECU.
