Intense Squeal when cold - '05 GT 5MT

There's not really much to explain here other than the car had been sitting for about 6 hours in the cold, went out, turned it on and started hearing this horrible noise. If I pushed the clutch pedal in it would go away, as I let it out the noise would come back. I let it warm up and by the time I was 15mins from where I had started the noise was completely gone.

Is this a pressure plate issue? The Car is Stage 2, 95k miles, Original clutch.

Video is here:

It's something in there, at stage 2 you might as well start looking at replacing the clutch set up.

Put a SMFW in to along with the TSK3 TOB.

Looks like the Clutch Masters 300 series clutch is getting good reviews.

I have a Spec 2+ in there for about 74,000 miles now with their LWFW, I wouldn't do a LWFW again, just go with the WRX SMFW or the 07-09 Legacy SMFW.

305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. (SOLD).  CHECK your oil, these cars use it.

Didn't even watch video, but it is the TOB. Mine does the same when it's cold out. My clutch is almost gone so I'll have to post carnage pics when I pull it. Coincidentally, I also have an 05 with 95k on it

Mine just started doing it. You still driving it around? I'm afraid I'm going to be on I270 one day and it just completely fail on me  SMFW and I think the Clutchmaster clutch is on my list. I just need to pony up a $1k or so... sigh.

Wow, if that video accurately captures the sound that's about the worst sounding TOB I've ever heard...

Probably doesn't help that the car had been sitting for 4 weeks straight with no movement.

The TOB's start making noise when it's cold out. I drove on a squeeky one for 30k miles in my Mustang.

I'm not sure if the Legacy has an access hole to view the TOB, but I used to spray lithium grease at the TOB through the hole TOB arm hole.

I got AAA with 200 miles of towing

You can go pretty far when it starts to slip a little. Mine only slips at 4k at about 90% throttle. I can probably DD it until March (maybe 2k more miles). I know you can squeeze some distance out of it, as my brother ran his for about 2-3k before changing it, and it slipped about the same.

I also vote engine removal vs. trans removal for the install (I have to do coolant anyway and put fresh fluid in recently, so why not ). It's just easier if you have access to the tools. Engine pull is fast. Trans method was a 14 hour affair the first time. Air ratchet plust the correct torx socket will do wonders when you need to remove the flywheel.

It is the throw out bearing and get it replaced ASAP. One of our techs had his LGT start making noise and 1/4 mile later he had no more snout. The case had cracked because the bearing failed and parts flew everywhere. Luckily we had a spare case in the shop but it was an expensive fix. If the car is stage 2 get an upgraded clutch (numerous options) and a stock WRX/07+ LGT flywheel.

My clutch isn't slipping at all. I've attempted to see if it would slip several times. I probably won't be doing the clutch install.

So If I'm going SMFW from an '06 WRX, should I be looking at a clutch for an '06 WRX as well? I was looking at the Clutchmaster FX300 - for the LGT it's around $1k, for the '06 WRX is only $590 (retail-ish).

Yes, you need a '06WRX Clutch, Pressure Plate, and Flywheel as well as Flywheel Bolts for the SWFW together.

FWIW I just ordered an FX300 and 06 flywheel. Will inspect snout and buy tsk3 sleeve if required. I paid around $875 for the combo. The tsk bearing and sleeve is $155 from infamous performance. I see you are in dc metro. Would you be doing labor yourself?

Nice, good to hear it might be around $1k all said and done for the parts. Unfortunately I probably will not be doing my own labor. Time constraints really won't allow me to get under the car and do it (plus my garage isn't really that awesome).

I ended up replacing my clutch/TOB with an 07 GT single mass and I've been very happy. think installed I paid sub $800.

Perfect timing for me to see this. My clutch TOB is making almost exactly the same noise. I need to peak inside to see if this is still the stock flywheel or not, but once I figure that out a new clutch will be coming my way asap!

Thanks. I stopped driving the car when the noise started. Hopefully I caught it before anything expensive was damaged. I need to check if my car still has the stock flywheel in it, but I assume it's still on the stock clutch at 78k miles.

Mike, you've always been great to me! I need to do some inspecting to see what's in my car, but I'll certainly sent you an email once I have a better idea of what I'm looking to get. The FX300 with an OEM single mass flywheel seems to be a favorite of those on the forums here.

Mine squealed for awhile, then the other day, the throwout bearing seized and took half of my tranny snout with it, bent my shifting fork, enlodged itself in my pressure plate, and scared my flywheel and clutch with shrapnel. I have searched all over to find a used transmission, but for the price, I am going to have someone rebuild mine with a new case ($500+400 labor).
