Recommended Posts

The car runs and drives great yes it is the stock turbo. There are no other symptoms. I had a local shop dyno the car to check for full power. The dyno print out shows 223.9hp and shop said car is pulling strong and able to build full boost @ 13psi

yes the 2009 does have a banjo bolt filter, its located under the turbo inlet tube, you basically have to pull the turbo to get to it. please do your homework before you try to make me look stupid

Perhaps you forgot that our engines involve multiple banjo bolts. The avcs banjo does have a filter, however in the context of your post it made it sound like the turbo banjo bolt, which had a filter in 05 and subsequently discontinued by subaru. When you say banjo bolt the majority of the forum assumes your talking about the notorious oil feed line banjo. Perhaps reviewing vacation pix can better iron out your confusion.

HAMMERDOWN, convinced me to use Amsoil products. He has around 170,000 miles on his engine. I'm using Amsoil Eroupean oil 5-40 in my SpecB that now has around 32,000 miles on it.

My 05 which has 143,000 miles still is on a diet of whatever oil is on sale at Walmart and Fram filters. I just replaced the turbo a couple of weeks ago.

The recently rebuilt (again) tranny in that car got Amsoil 75-90.

305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. (SOLD).  CHECK your oil, these cars use it.

And i thought I was a troll

Really? Don't bother replying.. keep it to yourself.

OP - it's clear that you have more wear then normal. Since you are running a very thin oil no surprises here. You cannot fix the wear you've caused and the only way to lower wear rates is to pick a better oil.

I think this thread can be address in one post... there are no 'detailed thoughts' required here.

Rotella changed the formulation of their oil--bitog/nasioc oil analysis threads :(

I'm using Castrol 0w30 right now--car seems to like it.

How much worse is the "new" RT6 5W-40 versus the old?

Considering that I only drive 4-5K miles a year, why spend $40+ for M1 0W-40 when a $22 jug of PP 5W-30 or RT6 5W-40 is probably more than good enough for my needs. I've never done an oil sample, I just change it every 6 months.

GC 0W-30 is hard to find around here. Sometimes AZ has it, but Wally world doesn't carry it or M1 0W-40.

I ran Mobil 1 for 150K miles and my turbo and engine didn't blow up. Never did a UOA on the Mobil 1. Switched to Castro Edge, did do a couple of UOA's and results were better than normal wear for an engine with 180K+ miles on it. The original turbo made it that long with no play in the shaft.

If you pay full price for any OTS oil you're a sucker. With all the specials AutoZone and Advance and PepBoys run I've never paid more than $30 for 5 qts of any oil.

If one's time is better spent somewhere else instead of tracking AZ sale to save a buck, in no way he's a sucker.

I know about their website, but I missed their last sale. Things never go on sale when you need them. I'm due for an oil change next month, so watch it go on sale in Nov.

I hear ya man, not crackin on ya. If you know you're due soon, why not look now.

Advance's specials are better this week, and there's one near you:

LOL, http://www.autozone.com...

Yeah, that took 45 seconds. I can't even get hard that fast. But hey, if you like wasting money, have at it braaah.

Yeap, keep spending a minute here, a minute there, many times over.

That's how price-discrimination (the tactic of charging different price for the same product at different times) works. And keeps those with lower value of time happier, giving them a perception that they are somehow smarter than those who didn't waster they time on shopping around.

And keep an eye open for those viagra promotions...

Someone said something (in another thread i think) about not to buy oils that say "resource conserving" in the circle on the back of the jug, any reason for this? (sheering quick?)

I went to a local VIP to see what oils had and did not have that title on the back, the mobil 1 5w-40 did not have that mark in the circle on the back, the jug is titled "turbo diesel" formula. any thoughts?

I have a thought - that is a silly idea. Any modern oil will have the energy conserving label, unless it is intended for diesels. Of course we all know that diesel oil is either the best thing ever or the worst thing ever, depending on what day of the week it is.

Even though none of this matters because the energy conserving label does not make an oil unsuitable for use, people will buy into it because they are convinced that it matters.

The oil madness continues and will never stop.

which days of the week should I run diesel???

is it ok to drain the energy conserving oil out after running it on the days when diesel is bad, and then pour it back in for the days it's good, and swap the two and then replace both after 3750 miles??
