MasAyinde
Are there any visual cues to distinguish the SPT short shifter from the OEM LGT shifter? Any measurements that are different?
iNVAR
One's shorter than the other.
MasAyinde
haha wiseass. I don't know if that's true, I thought it was a difference in geometry.
matt
I'm pretty sure the height did _not_ change when I went from stock long throw to OEM (STi) short throw on my 05. That was a while ago however, so my memory of the swap is fuzzy.
GTTuner
The lever itself has a different length from the pivot to the ball socket at the bottom. The STS is usually shorter in this demension. I have a stock lever hanging around I could measure if you like.
MasAyinde
Could you? i'd be very interested.
B-BGTLimited
Who needs a STS when you can just get the perrin adapter... Does the same thing and keeps the shifter at the same length, just way shorter throws.
CTATV
i think I've got a stock lever around as well. I have the Cobb one installed. bought it from Benjii, LGT-NY a while back... hopefully I'll be selling it next year and swapping a 6 speed though... MasAyinde
Or if someone could just tell me the physical distance in travel for the shift knob between 1st and 2nd with the OEM one.
GTTuner
Hell with the STS, do the mod to your existing shifter. It lowers it about an inch and a half, much more positive, slightly shorter throw and feel. I cant tell you a good demension, my shifter is modded. MasAyinde
i'd rather have stock height and much shorter throw than much shorter height and slightly shorter throw
Lardo420
http://legacygt.com/forums/showpost.php?p=544184&postcount=39 this post should give you a visualization of the differences. I have not seen the STi STS, but i feel that the dimension below the pivot point should be longer, thus giving you a shorter shift. If you read through that whole thread (if youre wicked fahkin bored) then youll see how people perceive the differences and what is actually true. subiedad51
It's definitely lower than the OEM one. The throws are much shorter as well. IIRC the height is at least and inch lower than stock height.
MasAyinde
Can anyone get a measurement of the stock height?
Nrw
I have a spt/sti/oem/whateveryouwanttocallit STS in my car.. I can try and get some dimensions when I go home. What are you looking for?
MasAyinde
I'm looking for the travel of the top of the shift knob between 1st and 2nd, height from the tip of the threaded part of the shifter to the welded bend at the pivot, and height from the bottom of the pivot to the top of the ball, if possible. I doubt you'd be able to measure the length of the linkages with it in the car.
Nrw
I'll see what I can get for you when I get home. FWIW I enjoy mine. Short throws without the knob being buried into the trim.
MasAyinde
Yeah, that's what I liked about the STi when I test drove one and I'd love to have a shifter like that now.
MasAyinde
Well, according to this dude, measuring the shifter itself won't help. http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2191633&highlight=shifter I guess the only measurements that matter are the travel of the knob and the linkage. I really figured the pivot point would be higher up.
Lardo420
did you try the DIY takeitoutandcutitdown method? I did that and I think it is 57856789674579o567283568956293^4 times better
iNVAR
haha wiseass. I don't know if that's true, I thought it was a difference in geometry. Hehe. There's a limit to how high up that pivot point goes. Even with a Cobb double adjustable shifter that allows you to adjust both, there are limits due to the car, not the shifter. What happens is the linkage in the car starts hitting stuff around the edges/sides inside the shifter compartment. Hell, even with a Kartboy STS I had to sanddown/file the corner for 2nd gear because it was hitting a support plate.
MasAyinde
did you try the DIY takeitoutandcutitdown method? I did that and I think it is 57856789674579o567283568956293^4 times better i don't want to cut my shifter. Like I said, it's not the height that I want to change, it's the geometry for shorter throws.
B-BGTLimited
I'm telling you, less effort and geometry changed, short throws same length... http://lh4.googleusercontent.com/public/FCpJTFFpAnf5zvbaIGFW8sSRxlW7_Ri5srY283pXTMCVt74TjtvWLHpC6gr5fdc3lc_MadQjNDwH-D4YRZpxqZ1VZA6CnJindL0C4n-5qrsxjkthUIuvrRfv2woCZ68pZ_sIMoGRggjn7MFprybOaEPiIG5wPPdQjafFTg I can take a picture of how its installed so you can see the geometry change and I can also video the throw if you want. iNVAR
See him prying up the corner? Except in our car, I believe that corner piece isn't a separate piece you can just pop off. http://www.clubwrx.net/forums/powertrain/134303880-perrin-short-shift-adapter-diy.html
