73datsun Posted May 3, 2011 Share Posted May 3, 2011 I installed Epic Engineering springs on my LGT this weekend. I retained my OEM struts. (don't ask, I'm still not sure why I wasted my time). The front OEMs were completely fine. The rears however took quite awhile to rebound. I was quite surprised as the car only has 58k miles, isn't thrashed on and nothing heavy is repeatedly kept in the trunk. Is this pretty standard? I also botched my saggy butt spacer install as I didn't order longer studs, wish Fred Beans had mentioned that when we talked on the phone. Oh well, I guess I'll put them in when I do the suspension. About a month ago I installed Eibach springs (same as Epic springs) and I have noticed that the car feels way too underdamped. Did feel that way initially. It took about a week or so on the Eibach springs to have the struts feel inadequate. On stock springs the struts would probably last to 100k miles, on aftermarket springs they will be overworked and have their life shortened. I'm at 61k and my car oscillates almost 2.5 times (up down up down up) from medium to large bumps. I think my rears are worse than my fronts as they are starting to make noise after ~ 2000 miles with the Eibach springs on them. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
AZP Installs Posted May 6, 2011 Share Posted May 6, 2011 Since we see a ton of Subies, and even more LGTs come through our shop, I'd say the average life span of stock struts with stock springs is about 70k miles. Once you put on lowering springs, then you are looking at a reduction of about 25% or so on them. The stock struts will also be under-dampened for lowered cars too. We've installed a few sets of them for customers and they like them. When I purchased the car with 82k the suspension still felt pretty good, but I must be rougher on it than the previous owner as it seems to be deteriorating fast. From my past experiences struts tend to last between 60-100k depending on the car and strut quality. I got 140k out of the struts on my Chrysler before I really had to replace them, and they were good up until about 120k. Looking back I should have replaced them around there...
