If you're willing to do the work, sure! I generally replace any gaskets I can when the engine is out of the car. Can never go wrong with new gaskets. :)

so I picked up the new engine today for $600. Dude said it came off a forester with like 72K. Can't be too sure about that but it's nice and clean ... lol

I'm not up to the task of pulling the heads right now ... I'm sure I'll regret this if it turns out the gaskets are bad. Gonna think about this again later...

However, it does look like the rear main seal is starting to seep and the black plastic cover thingy gasket is leaking pretty bad ... what's that cover called anyway? Separator plate? So the flywheel is coming off and those shall be done.

Hopefully I'll get some time this week to go by the parts store...

I had two 335 wide tires from a while ago and they had no purpose after I stopped using them as a table (with a glass over it) ... they came in handy to lay the engines on ... lol

pics are old vs. new

Picked up the engine hoist today. Also found a guy on Facebook who found me a shortblock (the one he had was a SOHC engine) that he didn't want to separate. Gonna look at that tomorrow. 79k miles on it for $400 asking.

Jab83 just bought a 2.2 SOHC engine for a little less then $200. Keep looking, you can find one for cheaper then $400. Thats a little on the high side

Wait, wait... You're looking for a 2.2 or 2.5? SOHC, DOHC? I'm just making sure. What I took from brokn's quoted post was that you were looking at a Phase I DOHC with 79K? If that's the case, it's not bad. If it's SOHC, he'll come down. If it's a 2.2 he should come WAY down.

Thanks for that post, brokn! I think I misunderstood... I hate giving out bad infos. :(

Well I took the flywheel off and popped the cover off and oh my good god! There was a bunch of baked oil gunkiness in there. Is this normal or does it show that the engine wasn't maintained that well? Cleaned out at much as I can and got a new steel cover. Gotta get bolts cos they're different; didn't realize that when I was at the dealership. Rear main seal will be in tomorrow. Then it's button up and install time.

I'm hoping to run some engine cleaner with new oil/filter after I get it started and let it run for a while, then change the oil/filter again. Used to use the BG brand stuff when I used to work at a shop and it used to do a great job at cleaning out baked on oil. Never tried the seafoam stuff though.

Still debating doing the head gasket and front seals.

Nice. What were the torque specs on that..?
dunno, lol

I was thinking of loctiting it but since only one bolt is defined as needing to have locktite (black one came with it) ... so I have them PFT for now.

PFT = pretty f*ng Tight, lol

Took that picture with all the part numbers just in case someone does a search in the future .. hopefully that'll help?

Cleaned the front subframe and some of the lower engine bay of all the oil/dirt today. Got most of it, will get the back/underneath later when I can ... or get it steam cleaned when it's on the road. Had heard about it, but I only just noticed the ~2" subframe spacers on the Outback!

Did you eat off the black paint with chemicals? Thats suppose to have paint on it I think to avoid corossion

There's no black paint on the subframe. It's just a treated piece of metal. Some sort of clear-coat or other protective. Mine is also somewhat clear. *shrugs*

IN!!! Well, my joy was short lived 'cos I forgot to put the TC bolts in, so the intake ducting needs to come back off. Also, only got what I can get from the top, need to complete everything from the bottom next week ... Baltimore Grand Prix starts tomorrow!!!

It's alive!!! Started her up she ran real rough and wouldn't idle. Shut her down, checked coolant, oil (at this time, it had cleaner in there) and noticed it was one of the tubes in the intake that was left unhooked (duh!) ... now runs like a champ, except I must've had a brainfart while the engine was out and I forgot to change the spark plugs. Changed the oil after running her for like 5 mins and its good to go! Runs a little rough right now, so hoping the new sparkplugs and some fresh gas will do the trick!

Can anyone tell me why the intake moans? you can hear it pretty well in the video. I def. didn't touch her inappropriately .. lol
