Hybrid intake install...

I finally got my hybrid intake installed. Install went smooth but somewhere down the line I'm going to replace the coupler at the MAF with a 3 to 2.75" silicon one as this old home depot coupler I had layin around is about 1/2" short of fitting perfect. I had to take out the front bolt that holds the airbox down so it has more room to flex when the engine moved. LOL....

 

On to the intake. I reset the ecu while I was installing it and let it idle 5-10 minutes after I was finished. I pulled out of my circle and punched it in first gear and WOW! HUGE difference in low end torque! I took the round about and punched it in second about 2500 rpms coming out of it and it kicks back much harder than before. No lag or slow throttle response! It really feels great! I am using a K&N panel filter with the stock air box and stock snorkus in place. Now on to the install pics...

 

The intake pipe I started with was an OBX cold air intake for the 98-99 Impreza RS that I trimmed to fit between the air box and TB. It had all the right ports so I didn't have to T anything or jimmy rig the lines.

Here is the pass. side PCV line tying into it's port. I didn't have enough hose clamps so I double zip tied it and gave it a good tug to make sure it won't pull off. It's on there good. I just trimmed the stock line and plugged it right in.

The second line I did was the line off the T that goes to the PCV valve. I used some 1/2" I.D. fuel line (red hose) and ran it right to it's port and hit it with a hose clamp.

Above you can see the start of tying in the IAC line. I turned the stock tube 180 degrees so it turned back slightly and then I used a Brass 1" to 3/4" adapter (from Lowes) to downsize the tube to 3/4" and then a Brass 90 degree coupler (also from Lowes) and up into the IAC port on the intake pipe. Perfect fit. I put some zip ties on each joint for reassurance but they were all pretty snug to begin with.

And last was the driver side PCV line and it was about 2" too short to reach its port so I cut about 1.5" off of the plastic T piece on the back of the torque box to join the existing (short) PCV line with a couple inches of pass. PCV line that I cut off earlier. Worked perfectly.

All the hoses fit in perfect and the car runs great! I think I am going to end up painting the intake pipe a flat black and removing the hood scoop block plate to let some cool air in on the aluminum pipe, should help keep it cool. And I'll take some better pics with my digital camera this weekend but my wife had it so I had to use my Crackberry. Lol...

But I highly recommend this intake setup for anyone that does a lot of slow stop and go commuting, like me, and wants that extra low end power for merging or just for having fun.

I unhooked the negative battery terminal and then turned the key so the ignition was on along with the headlights so they drained all the juice in the system. I did it before I got started so it was draining for a good 30-45 minutes. But typically you disconnect the negative terminal and turn the ignition on and pump the brakes for a few minutes.

Where did you get the hybrid intake parts? I was looking into getting a cold air intake which was simple to find but a lot of the forums are saying that cold air intake isn't the greatest for the 2nd gen legacy and the hybrid intake was a better option.

Quicker way of resetting the ECU:

 

Disconnect negative cable.

 

Step on brake pedal 15x for 15secs each time.

 

Let car sit for 10mins.

 

Plug negative terminal back in.

 

Start & idle for 5mins (rpms should jump up to about 2000-2500rpms on first start).

 

I'm glad to see that more & more people are using the hybrid intake setup. It is truly the only way to for with intakes for our cars.

Yeah, that 'accordion' -styled intake pipe without an air box, a 3" MAF adapter, and a cone filter...

 

Some chose to route the filter into the fender to avoid heatsoaking the filter but with that comes the chance of sticking up enough water to hydrolock the motor

I dunno where you got that one, that airbox is a plague, there was a crazy detailed thread somewhere comparing all of Subaru's pipes and the smoother cai one, the accordion style provided the most air velocity into the IM, the cone filter at the end had the lowest air temp.. I'll try to find it a bit later

i thought the dyno proven hybrid was the OEM air box and filter with the CAI tubing to the TB? i must have read that damn thread like 4 times and never got that the 95 tubing with a cone filter was the best set up.

 

I can't find any reference to a snorkus delete adding power. It apparently adds growl, but no power gain noted in any threads/videos I've watched.

 

Then again, I'm still looking for a good "How To" write-up with pics on the hybrid intake setup.

Yeah the snorkus removal won't gain any power, its just a silencer... Subaru sells a rubber plug to replace that hole left in the fender where it attached to the original box

 

I should also note that while removing that will add growl... Itll subsequently cause a voltage spike in low rpm

Zues, if you do find that thread comparing the subaru pipes, id very much like to look at it. I will look too but if you come across it please pm me or post it on this thread :)

So, now we know to leave the front half of the intake alone, but what about the back half? Is there any point to changing the back half of the intake if we don't change the front half? Yes! Examine the Engine Load graph again, focusing on 4,000 RPM to redline. The stock intake system just hits a ceiling at about 4,000RPM while the SRI and Hybrid continue to build. From 5,000 to 6,000 RPM, you can see that the SRI did flow slightly more air than the Hybrid, but that both are far more free-flowing than stock.

So is the general consensus that the Hybrid is better than the SRI and CAI?

 

Yes, as it does not suck up any of the ambient hot air & doesn't cause a voltage spike due to not having the snorkus removed.
