Questions for people who have done these mods.

Recommended Posts

Ok, im looking to start moding my 1997 LGT. i have a few questions to ask and would like answers from people who have done it, Or know for sure it can be done.

ej22T Motor Swap(What's needed and how hard?)

Manual Tranny swap(since mine is auto :( )

02 Impreza(bug eye) Front Grill(will it bolt on or modification needed?)

Thats all i have for now but i am sure i will think of more.

I am canadian so any canadian part sites would help ALOT, since i don't want to get dinged with border fees and such.

Thank you in advance for all your help. Here is a couple pictures of my baby.

The transmission swap would be hard, but possible. The driveshafts are all the same, so no worries there. The transmission bolts to the engine, no problems there. The manual transmission uses the same mounts, no issues there, but you will need a lot of extra components to complete the swap. You'll need the pedal assembly, the shifter and linkage, the hydraulic lines for the clutch, the clutch master and slave cylinders, a flywheel, and you'll need to either modify the stock ECU to think it's in neutral all the time, or rewire the car with an ECU from a manual transmission car.

I'm also not sure if the rear differential ratios are the same between the automatic and manual transmissions. If they're not, you will need to switch the rear differential as well.

EDIT: The following was typed before I realized you're in Canada. The following applies to the United States. I'm not sure of Canadian laws on the subject, but I'm sure they must be similar. Either way, you need to verify that no such laws exist before swapping engines...

Swapping in an EJ22T is illegal. The EJ22T only used an OBDI ECU, while any Subaru after 1995 had made the switch to OBDII electronics. In 1996 all new vehicles sold in the US had to be OBDII compliant. It's against the law to retrofit any OBDII compliant vehicle with an OBDI engine.

The swap can be done, and it would be pretty easy too, but you could never get an inspection sticker if you had to take it for an inspection. As soon as anyone tries to find the OBDII port in the dashboard the jig is up on your motor swap.

The transmission swap would be hard, but [not] possible. The driveshafts are all the same um, auto drive shafts are shorter, it's sedan and wagon that are no different, so no worries there. The transmission bolts to the engine, no problems there yup, but the manual bolts are shorter, you must get those with your trans. The manual transmission uses the same mounts, no issues there not with JDM gearbox's they don't, but these usually are included with the transmissions anyway. Unless you mean they share the same bolt pattern to the chassis, in which case, correct, but you will need a lot of extra components to complete the swap.

If they're not, you will need to switch the rear differential as well usually, in JDM land at least, they are different.

Oh, he's in canada. Sell car, import JDM GT. Done.

Cool thanks for the answers guys. Guess ill have to do the cookie cutter WRX swap. Unless there is something out there for around the same amount that will put out ~250whp? Maybe something all motor and not boosted?

Are you insinuating turbo engines aint all motor. Shame on you, how is lacking boost a good thing? :p

I kid, there is the EZ30R covnversion, but this generally is a bit harder i'd say, simply cause you have to go aftermarket with the ECU, because of the immobilisers in the factory ECU's.

Or you could go the not so travelled route of buying a JDM front cut. Drop a V3/4 STi engine in there man. There's nothing quite like it. IF you get a cut with gear box, there's your engine swap and manual conversion in one easy package. I'd say this is by the EASIEST, and BEST RESULT route. The big down is the trouble of actually getting a front cut, and the price tag (That said, the vlaue for money is better, it's just allot of money)

There are thos damn pictures again...

Can't do that yet AFIAK. Don't they have to be a certain age...

That said, GTB's started in 1996... Hmmm.

I'd hold on till you can get a limited. They are very obviously the best subaru ever made.

^^ best grill ever. I can vouch :)

I was thinking the other day, has anyone ever done a V8 swap? A few of my buddies have miatas and monzas, and two have done the swap with little modification (in the monza's defense, his came with a 302 I think standard, but he went with a 455 from an old pontiac). This thread got me thinking about that; sometime down the road I'm swapping, but uniqueness counts!
