I need one. Where would I get this key? Will it work if i goto a USA subaru dealer and have them marry the key? What else would i have to do to make this work? (lock cylinder, ecu, etc...)
It's probably a radio frequency (RF) thing as the FCC allows certain RF devices to operate in this country while the equivalent Japanese CC allows certain RF devices to operate in their country. The RFs are different between the two countries so, in all likelihood, the transmitter in the JDM fob and the receiver in the USDM car would not be able to talk to each other. The mechanics, i.e., lock cylinder, ignition key, etc., are probably reasonably compatible., just the electronics would be FUBAR'd. SBT
It is actually better for us to have them separate, in my opinion. (I plan to go with an aftermarket alarm system to complement my aftermarket stereo system, so having to essentially lug around two key FOB's would be a pain. -Allen
Couldn't agree more. Just wish the 2005s had an STi key blank available for them. I miss mine from the 2004.

The problem with that idea is the VW/Audi key is a laser cut key. Ours are a conventional cut key. The JDM key is laser cut. Wonder how hard it would be to import the key, door lock and ignition and refit them in our cars + reprogram the imoblizer.

Holy back from the dead thread Batman. Internal to the LGT key itself is an immobilizer chip. If that isn't present, the car won't start. I'm not sure that the chip itself is re-programmable. I'm thinking the reprogramming has to happen at the control units, of which there are three. WRT importing everything and lashing it together and hoping that it'll work with our system. Honestly believe it would be cool, but way more trouble than it's worth... just my .02 or $.0246 (the actual value of 2 cents today) worth. SBT

The parts department cuts them in house with a bench that has a drill and all the attachments. But anyways, How can we get this key in the States? I wanna have less stuff on my keychain, its getting too big. haha. What if we order them from Japan and then have them programmed and cut here at a dealer?
I can't believe I just read this whole thread... :(
There are times when I value having a separate remote, like when I separate the two before pt and the remote fits in that little pocket of my shorts. That JDM key wouldn't, just like both the key and remote don't fit. I can think of many other features the JDM or EDM car has that we don't that would actually make a difference to me and the functionality of the car.
See title!!
I noticed an interesting on the Global Subaru site (Subaru Global) I asked SOA about the key: "The key pictured on the Global Web site is not offered by Subaru of America in the United States market. This "gray market" key is not a U.S. specification key, so we do not have any information on it. We would have to test it for ourselves before we could offer it in the U.S or know if it works with our vehicles in America. Typically, vehicle owners who import gray market parts, do so by trial and error, taking the chance that after purchasing and importing the part(s), that they may or may not work. As I had explained before, if we ever offer this key in the U.S. market we would test it first, and at that point we would be able to say if it can be retrofit to older Subaru models. Let me know if you have any other questions! Sincerely, Samir Hasan" As a reply to: "Thanks Samir for your quick reply. I was curious to know if the key can = be imported and cut here. I understand that it may utilize a different technology (laser cut). The reason why I ask is that I am interested in reducing the bulk that I carry around. I saw that this key has the = remote buttons built in, which would allow me to carry just a key and no = separate remote." Someone clearly has a case of the Mondays...
There is no way in hell that they will tell you that the key will work. There is too much liability in doing so...
I was hoping that they might indicate when or if it might be available. Perhaps something like: "Well PolarDog, unfortunately this key is too cool for anything older than an '07." Or something like: "It will become available when the fusion-power option is available..." Or perhaps: "Yes. We have had many complaints about the gargantuan size of the US key and remote. Our engineers are working on replacing the laser cut portion of the JDM key with the regular cut key found on most North American models. This way, the entire globe can enjoy the convenience of the one key with the remote." Liability? I am not familiar with the auto business and so I'm not sure I understand the potential exposure that these options place SOA in (outside of cost). Please explain.
what you need to ask is 'When are you going to start testing these keys?"
"Hello PolarDog, The question is "WILL we be testing these keys?". These keys are not available for U.S. market 2007 models. We do not have any information regarding the 2008 models since it is too early at this point, so I cannot guess if they will ever be offered in the U.S. market. I cannot ASSUME the keys will be offered in the U.S. in the future, but USUALLY such design changes do carry over in future model years. We can only speculate at this point. Let me know if you have any other questions! Sincerely, Samir Hasan Subaru of America, Inc. When would you begin testing the keys?"
