Jschenen
So I am putting snows on my car and the dealer insists that I place 18s on my car as that is the stock size in my 3.0r. I want to go down to 17s. Why are they so insistent on me staying stock?
KurtP
they can charge you more for 18" snow tires than 17" ones.
Jschenen
They kept saying it will mess up the electroncis. What electronics are they talking about?
__raj
A service writer even service manager does not necessarily have intimate knowledge of technical issues. They convey issues between the customer and technical staff typically and generate sales. Personally I would contact the tirerack and ask and see what they recommend. They are beyond knowledgeable in selling tires, rims etc. A car dealer is very limited in the respect.
Underdog
As long as you adjust the tire size properly, you will be fine. For example: my winter tires are stock sized 215/45-17 on stock wheels (17x7 e55); my summer tires are 225/40-18 on 18x7.5 e48 wheels. Even though the wheels are different by an inch, the diameter is only slightly affected (637.2mm vs. 625.3mm). This ends up as ~1% difference between actual speed and my speedometer. So unless you have TPMS or huge brakes, you should be fine. Just do your homework. The Crimson Dynamo
blackfang
They are probably saying that because it can affect the speedometer. However, if you size your tires right similar to "plus sizing" but sizing down, you won't have that much of an issue. sactojesse
^ Agreed. Your dealer assumes you are an idiot who can't do math. Just keep your overall rolling diameter as close as possible to stock.

spec.B Dream
FYI, last weekend Tire Rack had a special on the 18" wheel and tire package. Ended up being less expensive than the 17" package. It turned out being $300 cheaper than my local tire shop was charging just have snow tires from them mounted on my stock wheels.

09DgmLGT
http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html A good tool to show you how far over/under your speedo with your new setup will be ... don't use the stealership -> tirerack is your friend. IMO 17s for the winter!
