I'm sad, but mostly MAD, dealer damaged car

OK, took my Outback XT ltd to Flatirons Subaru this morning for it's first service, at nearly 1400 miles. They seem nice, place is clean and friendly, and the chairs are comfortable. So, I am waiting, and waiting, and waiting, and finally my car is ready. Well, they tell me there is bad news...and I get stressed by that comment. The managed to back my car into another car while pulling out of the service bay. Damage to left rear bumper, scratches through the paint and into the plastic...there are maybe 6-8 major scratches with other minor scratches. The major ones are about 12 inches long and about 1/8" wide. They still charged me the $28 or so for the oil change...but did give me a comp on my 7500 service and a loaner until they fix the car.

They said they will have it fixed today at 4pm...and I am gonna hold them to it. The car better be perfect, as it WAS perfect when I dropped it off for service this morning.

on a side note, the outback XT they gave me as a loaner is an automatic...with the tiptronic thing...well, talk about turbo lag and being a dog...even in tip mode. NOT a fan of the automatic. There is more turbo lag on that car than I had on my Audi Allroad. Only drove home, but I already miss my 5 speed :(

I know, I protested, so the service manager comped the 7500 mile service. not sure i am going back though, may try another dealership after this. We will see what happens this afternoon.

NOT a happy customer at this point. Believe me, I WILL be filling out the survey on this one.

Bummer bro, that sucks. I have about 1600 on mine now. I think I'm just going to wait til the 3000 mile mark to get the first service done.

BTW.....Elway South is comping the first service since I bought there.

In a few weeks, I'l let you know how it goes.

Thanks, Ben

man i know it sucks but as an emplyey for a dealership i think u should fill out the survey honestly and not when u are still mad. yeah they messed up your car. but as long as your not out a car and u get your car back as good as it was then... well u should show that in the survey. from what u say it seams like its a good place to go. i mean stuff happens. i would give them a second chance and see what happens

I will save judgement for when I get the car back this afternoon, but believe me, if it is not as good as it was...well, they will not be happy either. I will protest loudly. I know they are trying to make it right, but it also comes down to MY wasted time going back and forth...my car is just a month old, did not have a single blemish on it, it was PERFECT...and if it comes back to me less that perfect...well, then my time is wasted. That is not right.

They are comping the second service, the 7500 mile service, so I will give them a chance then, but if they screw up this repair, and that service, I will make a formal complaint to not only them, but SoA as well. There is NO reason why my car should not be returned to me this afternoon in less than perfect condition...so we will see in about 2.5 hours.

they say fixing it, I told them NO WAY, but they said if I am not happy when I pick it up, they will do what it takes to make me happy...which means replacing the bumper. I just don't want to waste time on this one, and have to keep going back for their mistake, I don't live close to them, so it might be a pain

Damn, i'd still be pissed. I think they would have to remove the bumper completely, and patch and paint. Not sure how they can get that done in 1 day for you.

Be 100% sure that it's what you want......otherwise, go out to the lot and get a bumper off one of the cars on the lot.

that is what I will have them do, already told them that...if it is not PERFECT, I won't accept less, told the service manager that before I left. I will also get something in writing that will say that if the repair fades or chips, that they will cover it under any subaru warranty...I want the car INTACT and covered under their dollar.

I do everything else but oil changes...due to proper disposal reasons (somewhat environmentally conscious) I have always done all the brake, suspension, exhaust and interior upgrades on my own. I don't have the desire to change my oil and then dispose of it. So I take it in. Plus, if they have record of a service, that helps with any possbile engine warranty claims in the future. Something I learned from owning an Audi.

I am flipping out, totally destroyed an otherwise perfect day for me....and my neck muscles are all tight and I have a bad case of heart burn (without eating a good burrito mind you). I know I am getting all worked up on this, and need to relax until I see what the car looks like. You never know, they may actually do a good job and have it just right, but I am a non-trusting person...so I worry that it will never be right again...which I will refuse to take the car until they get it right...and put miles on their loaner they gave me while mine sits. Heck, I have a road trip planned next week, how nice will it be to take their car and put the miles on that, and then not have to clean all the road grim off at the end....

I just wish i had my digital camera with me to document the damage for befor and after pics....I need to get one of those pocket cameras just for situations like this.

Get all correspondence and promises from them in writing if not 100% satisfied when you pick it up.

A good airbrush company can fix it in an hour or two for less than $150 as long as the bumper is not cracked. I had a deep gouge in my rear bumper from some buckethead in an SUV - I was skeptical, but the dealer had their lot repair guy take care of it and only billed me the actual cost. It looks perfect and I can't tell... I am super picky, so that is saying alot.

what the hell has to be serviced at 1400 miles? My manual says 7500 which is retarded too... change the oil every 3000 is my motto.

Thank God!!! Got the car back, and it truly looks like new condition.

First to answer 02bluefirehawk's question....You should service at 1500 miles to help to remove the excess metal shavings. My dealer recommended it, and the dealership that did the service also recommended it. From here on out, I will be doing ever 3K changes, and at 10K, switching to synthetic oil Mobil 1 Synthetic.

OK, on to the car and the situation. Picked it up, had them park it in the sun so I can really look at it, I crawled all around the car, and got up close and personal with the entire bumper. looks like a new bumper to me. So, if they repainted it, they did a fantastic job, if they replaced the bumper, well, who cares, it is a new bumper. The paint guy was leaving as I got there, stopped by and watched me check out the car. So I get the impression he painted it....either that or he could not fix it and they just said they painted it. Either way, looks great.

Now on to warranty...this is ver batum from the invoice:

"Technician 1532 backed into another customer's car. Reconditioned back to new. Flatiorn Subaru will guarantee the paint repair for 3 years or 36,000 miles from the oiginal pruchase date (whichever occures first) against defects in the paint. If customer goes to another authorized Subaru dealer with a defect in the paint, that dealer should contact Flatirons for reimbursement for repair. This warranty is for defects in the paint only, external influences are not covered."

Can't argue with that. So, I am a happy customer, and will be going back to flatirons for service. Special thanks to Josh, one of the service writers, and Michael, the service manager, for being patient with me being a hard ass, and treating me like a valued customer. They have won my service needs for now. I gave them a hard time, but I was really upset...still feel tension in my neck and shoulders, but nothing a good dinner and movie can't fix.

At least my car is back to normal....and while I was there, I picked up the AccesPort from Cobb...they sell them there. So, guess I will do a little playing tomorrow :D

i am glad it got fixed. a few yrs ago they messed up my last car and treated me w/ no respect, so i let SOA know and things didn't look that good at the end... SOA told me that they changed the management so i dunno how it is now. jon you can find out and let us know. :p

why didn't you go to Mike Shaw Subaru on 104th? it should be closer to your place.

if/when i get AP, i will order it online to save on tax (hotsubaru in TX offers free shipping).

They seemed to do a great job, and the car was clean in the end...so, accidents happen, I was upset, but they took my bad attitude and handled it with grace, and then comped me the 7500 service. So, I will give them a shot. I know Shaw is closer, but NOT a fan of them. Went there with a budy of mine who was getting an STi, or looking at one anyway, and they were totally dicking him around, and treated him like trash...so he bought an Audi S4...simply because of Shaw's response to him and me. I have heard GREAT things about Flatirons, so I wanted to give them a try. A bit disappointed, but it ended well.

I thought about ordering the AP from Hot, but since I was there, and they threw me discounts on other things...like the front bumper cover, dog guard, nets, and other things like that, it came out pretty even overall.

Now to just get it uploaded, hopefully this afternoon or something, I can't wait to feel the difference now that the car is broken in properly.

Sorry to hear about the accident. Glad it got fixed to your liking!!!

Just wondering why you need to wait until 10K to switch to mobil 1 ?

According to Subaru, and several service managers and performance specialists with different auto manufacturers, they recommend wainting until 10K for synthetic to let the rings set in better, then once set in, the synthetic helps to maintain them.

I am not really sure why that is, but I have heard it MANY times from MANY people. I have always done that to all my cars based on those recommendations. It's just what I know, but I have no real proof as to why that is. But I trust the people who have told me that.
