idontknow Posted January 20, 2009 Posted January 20, 2009 Well, after 6 months of on/off work I’ve finally finished by stereo install. I’ve got a small write up and some pics of the final product below. Sorry no install pics, I had a local stereo shop do the install and asking for pics wasn’t in the budget. I started with a Kenwood KOS-L702 7” touch screen, Kenwood KOS-V500 Advanced Integration A/V Controller, Rockford Fosgate T162S 6.5” component speakers in the front, an Alpine MRP-300F amp driving the 6.5’s up front and the factory speakers in the back, Sirius sat radio, Bluetooth, and USB input. This setup allowed me to add a video touch screen up front, which fit perfectly where the cubby hole and info unit used to be, and control all the media sources in the car in one place. One of the best features is it uses the factory stereo for CD and FM, so the factory unit is still a used piece of equipment and not just some knobs and lights taking up dash space. Touch screen: http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/nn1/smwildman/DSC_0003.jpg http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/nn1/smwildman/DSC_0004.jpg USB input http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/nn1/smwildman/DSC_0001.jpg The second round added a Rockford Fosgate P3L-S10 10” sub, an alpine FPS-500M amp, and a backup camera. The only drawback to the sub is it doesn’t perform very well with the rear arm rest closed. The sub really needs to breath into the cab, so leaving the door for the trunk pass though down is a must for now. I’m going to have a local interior customizer perforate the leather cover on the trunk pass through door so I can keep it in the up position. Sub (picture from the front seat) http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/nn1/smwildman/DSC_0005.jpg Amp rack http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/nn1/smwildman/DSC_0007.jpg The sub sits inbetween the amps behind the rear seats. I only lost about 7-8 inches of trunk space, leaving lots of room for luggage and plenty enough clearance to open the spare tire cover without removing the sub. Sorry, no pics of the back up camera. Well, that’s it. Let me know what you think.
Ferenczy33 Posted January 20, 2009 Posted January 20, 2009 Looks nice. To really get that sub to perform you might need to have it flipped around to rear fire it into the trunk area. That was how I was able to get the best bass response out of my subs in my sedan while leaving the pass through closed.

Yeah I thought of that, but that would leave the speaker exposed to everything I put in the trunk (luggage, trash, kids junk). I didn't want to risk damaging the sub.

trackhore Posted January 20, 2009 Posted January 20, 2009 Move the IR sensor behind the left cubby vent. It will look infinitely more OEM, and the remote will still work fine. Or is it a mic?
MDork Posted January 20, 2009 Posted January 20, 2009 looks great...but now where to your sunglasses go
frkkevin Posted January 20, 2009 Posted January 20, 2009 a cheaper option may be to open up that hole where an 8" fits into the rear deck rather than fab up the center .. you might try it and see before hand looking good tho 512whp/465ftlb 2005 5EAT Legacy (Build Log) Videos - -
idontknow Posted January 21, 2009 Author Posted January 21, 2009 couldn't you just have put a grill on it? Hauling trash can get messy sometimes, and I didn't want to risk ruining the sub. Move the IR sensor behind the left cubby vent. It will look infinitely more OEM, and the remote will still work fine. Or is it a mic? It's the IR sensor, and I like that idea. I'll have to look into moving it. Thanks. a cheaper option may be to open up that hole where an 8" fits into the rear deck rather than fab up the center .. you might try it and see before hand Thought of that, but the amp rack almost completely seals off the sub from the trunk space. The 8" opening up to the rear deck is in the trunk space, so it really wouldn't do me any good. But thanks for the thought, and compliment.
Shaunsportmaster Posted January 22, 2009 Posted January 22, 2009 wow that seriously looks amazing! Good job!
gfxdave99 Posted January 22, 2009 Posted January 22, 2009 Dude great work! If everything seems under control, you're just not going fast enough. - Mario Andretti
dragonman586 Posted January 22, 2009 Posted January 22, 2009 I routed my USB cable form my setup into the armrest. But nice job anyway.
Jerboa113 Posted January 22, 2009 Posted January 22, 2009 nice install. that poor kid with the subwoofer firing at him/her tho! "The penalty good men pay for indifference to public affairs is to be ruled by evil men." - Plato
Madjik_Man Posted January 22, 2009 Posted January 22, 2009 nice install. that poor kid with the subwoofer firing at him/her tho! my first thought! that's awesome though, she's going to love beats big time for the OP - curious, why not put the clock/temp display in the ashtray? and I'm assuming that HU has some sort of iPod integration option?
idontknow Posted January 23, 2009 Author Posted January 23, 2009 nice install. that poor kid with the subwoofer firing at him/her tho! THEY LOVE IT!! My 7 yr old daughter begs me to turn up Radio Disney when the 2 yr old isn't in the car. I got to admit, Burnin' up by the Jonas Bros sounds pretty good at about 60% volume.
FireB Posted January 23, 2009 Posted January 23, 2009 Oh my..... after 1.5 years of owning the car, I realized there was a ski hole behind the armrest!!! Nice stereo setup! That's gonna blow your kids brain out if you don't becareful!
Jerboa113 Posted January 23, 2009 Posted January 23, 2009 That's gonna blow your kids brain out if you don't becareful! I dunno. It is a RF sub. "The penalty good men pay for indifference to public affairs is to be ruled by evil men." - Plato
tdoggydog Posted January 24, 2009 Posted January 24, 2009 That is an amazing install - excellent work! My question is about the bezel. I assume it was originally a cubby and you had it modified? Do you know of the work/labor that went into it? I have nav and would assume that too, can be modified to accommodate the aftermarket screen. I've been going back and forth about a Parrot setup, but if I have this car for the next 8-10 years, I'm wondering if going the extra mile (and cost) would be worth it to have more a complete set with more modern electronics.

It was the original cubby that was modified. The screen just happen to be the exact width as the cubby hole (lucky as hell!). It was trimmed very little on the sides and the bottom and only took about 2 hours to get it to fit. You have to look really hard to tell it's not stock. My guess is the nav bezel would need more trimming to fit the screen, plus the finished sides of the cubby hole are visible because the screen is flat and the besel has a slight arc to it. If you went this way I would find a used bezel with the cubby hole and go from there. Like I said, very little trimming was done on the sides. Could save you a lot of time and headache. As for the parrot system I would definetly get it. I have parrot systems in both my cars and refuse to live without it. Which is why I'm going to warn you about this system. It's not compatible with ALL phones. I have a Samsung SCH-i760 (a smart phone) and the system is not compatible with it. I'll have to wait until the next version of the parrot software from Kenwood, load the new software and hope parrot added my phone to the compatibility list. You can check the compatibility of your phone with this system at kenwoodusa.com. The software upgrade capability of this system is one reason I bought it. I'm like you I plan on keeping this car a long time, so upgrades to the system should keep things new.

I was worried that the current nav bezel would be too hard to modify as its got a finished beveling that I assume would be hard to match. So, I guess, if I decide to pull the trigger, then to make sure my phone is compatible with the system and also to find a cubby bezel. Thanks!
tdoggydog Posted January 25, 2009 Posted January 25, 2009 Also, would you mind posting some pics of the nav screens, phone screens, and any other random screens you think pertinent? That would be great to see!
idontknow Posted January 26, 2009 Author Posted January 26, 2009 I didn't add the nav. I think there are some screen shots of the nav at kenwood website. As for the other screens, I'll see what I can do.
Detslider Posted January 28, 2009 Posted January 28, 2009 Very clean and I like that the stock HU is still in use.
biz77 Posted January 29, 2009 Posted January 29, 2009 Anyone know if the smaller version of that screen (KOS-L432) will fit INSIDE an unaltered cubby?
idontknow Posted January 31, 2009 Author Posted January 31, 2009 Looks like the L432 would fit if you removed the door. I can't find any dimensions for it on the web. I would contact Kenwood for outer dimensions and go from there. Good luck.
