About to do a bad thing (1 tire)

Car is overdue for inspection by 3 days. I called to make an appointment, and the car now has a flat tire. Due to some recent financial problems, I cannot afford 4 new tires immediately. I found a place that has my tire (Hankook Ventus Sport K104 205/50/17) in stock. I do limited driving right now, only about 10 miles/day, getting to work and back. The tires that are on the car have about 11,000 miles on them.

I know you're supposed to change all 4 so the treadwear matches, but having the right tire, as opposed to the spare has to be better, right? Like i said, I do limited driving right now, and am not an aggressive driver.

Begin your rants now...

I'm hoping that they will be close enough. When I go to the tire shop this afternoon to get the tire put on, I plan on measuring the circumference. I did read on here that someone said if the circumference was more than 1/4" difference, then you could potentially have problems. Somewhere else(maybe rs25.com or nasioc) I was told that if the tire still had at least 70% tread vs a new tire, it would be alright. I know that it comes down to splitting hairs, but like i said, this is all i can do at the moment. In 2 weeks I have a nice paycheck with a lot of overtime coming, so I should be able to suck it up and get the other 3 tires replaced then.

I went to the tire shop on my lunch break, just got back. I had called ahead to make sure they had a k104 in stock, and they did.

As soon as I pulled up and said that I was there for the K104, the owner of the shop immediately warned me about subaru's awd system and replacing all 4 tires.

I said, yeah I know, but tires that are on the car only have 11k on them. So he checked my tread depth vs the new tire and he said that after looking at the tires he wouldnt even try to sell me on all 4 tires. He said that the new tire vs whats on the car should within the limits. Nice old guy, knew what he was dealing with, and I know the shop has been around since the dark ages. So if you're ever stuck in York, PA with a flat, or need all 4, check out Henise Tire on Richland Ave.

Yeah good deal, old school/honest man that didn't try to "scare you" into into buying what you don't really need...... The Service Manager at our Subaru dealership explained the "allowable parameters" on/for circumference(s) several months ago and we even together measured all 4 of the tires on our car......Something that ought/needs to be done periodically......Peace

You very well might be ok with only 11k on them. Usually we see anywhere from 15-19k as being the threshold for the 1/4" rule. Do NOT measure tread depth. That is not accurate and you need to measure the total circumference.

they don't shave them to make them the same size!!!! lol the rule is all 4 tires need to be the same size brand and tread pattern and within 2/32nds of each other!!!! i worked at Costco in the tire dept for seven years and have changed tires on Subaru's for a long time and lots of them. and i worked at america's tire company for 5years. just my experience.

Incorrect. They have to be the same size, brand, tread and have to be within 1/4 inch of circumference, not 2/32nds. 2/32nds is more than 1/4" in Circumference. This has already been hashed out in another thread http://www.legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php?t=91308

Here is another thread that has good info

Here is a post in the thread that proves why measuring tread depth is inaccurate

definitely some good info... unfortunately i had no choice but to replace one. i should be replacing the others coming up very soon, just as a precaution. I have <50 miles on the new tire, so i should be ok... that and i trust the owner of the shop i went to.

If you measure the others using a tape measure and the circumference on all 4 tires are all within 1/4 ", you don't need anymore tires.
