Just to mark the location of the reflector for reassembly and marking for aiming. Also helps with cutting and marking the projectors for mounting.

Just curious, whats the tape in the housing for?

I just got my modded headlights back on my birthday, just in time to install for my car's first birthday the day after. :spin:

^ berkshire, I cannot answer questions related to y'all's later-revision's DRLs/highs (but if it's anything like my wife's '09 FXT, I could take a stab at it, since I disabled the DRLs on it) - but I can definitely answer your question regarding comparison to the rest of the headlamp housing.

Those strips in eehpeehthreeh's picture look like the "side-emitters" from Oznium. I just recently tried them (their "cool-white" is what I'm currently using), to replace my YourLEDShop flexibles, as the latter have started to fail.

They're *very* bright, as you can orient them so that they're firing along the visual plane. Mine (currently - I have yet to finalize setup, and the amount of electrical tape I've got on the wiring testifies to this :redface:) sit on top of my Stanza eyelines, so they're pointed directly down-road. They're actually brighter than my CCFL DDE halos, albeit with the latter rests inside of a LaserVEIL G4 coated housing :). On any kind of overcast day, they'll more than function as DRLs. For sunnier days, I'd say that if you're willing to "double" the number of LEDs per strip, by either overlayering ("bending back") or by purchasing an additional strip to serve as the overlay, you'll be decently effective. A concern would remain, however, that they can overpower your turn-signals...note how on late-model Audis that their LED DRLs disengage when their turn-signals are activated? Yep, that's the concern.

One additional concern I have is still with product quality.

I was disappointed that one of the LEDs in one of my two strips (these approach, each strip, the $29 mark, before shipping) was mis-binned, and appeared much "warmer" than the others. Luckily, it was in a part I wasn't using, so it's taped-off. Another disappointment was that one sector of three - luckily, near the un-used end on that set, was defective. The final disappointment in terms of quality is with the silicone overlayer. On one strip, there was a defect large enough that with simple handling (to put the strip on the lamp housing; BTW, lest you think I'm too rough with things like this, please note that I was among the first to use CCFL "halos," at a time when CCFL rings, for this purpose, were uncoated/naked and extremely fragile...I never had any problems, there :)), my finger (flesh, not nail) stripped-off the defective portion, which would've lead to weatherseal breach.

With all the problems the people were having over the standard flexi-strips, I thought that I should give the side-firing ones a try, especially as people have gushed over the supposed quality of items from Oznium. After a bit more research, it seems like Q/C is still a problem, and that it is more a manufacturing issue than a specific-vendor issue.

Thanks for the compliments! These were done by Outback Auto in WA.

The way the wiring was set up did not affect the DRLs/highs at all, however for aesthetic purposes I just went ahead and unplugged them. Also, the wiring essentially made the LEDs toggle as the parking light, so even when the turn signals are on, the LEDs don't go away (that always bugged me about the Audis!).

Thanks, I am torn though, on the lower shrouds the white areas are translucent and I am unsure the light i want to use behind them LED's or just go with the CCFL's what ya think? Most 350 guys use CCFL's but it doesnt give the nice hue and glow of the costly LED's

^ Looks great! :D

^ I'd go with LEDs. Like you said, the new/costlier bin-matched ones have nice tone/hue, and their output rivals that of CCFLs.

I'm still stuck in 2004 , and must caution you to be sure you're able to heat-sink those stars - but for all I know, nowadays, that may no longer even be an issue.

"CCFLs are soooooooooooo 2001."

Maybe this'll also push me more to get going on a full-optics retrofit, too.
