aimijo6226
My 2005 Legacy GT is overheating once every month or so. Today I was only in the car for 5 minutes and it was about 1/4 inch below the red. I'm a girl, forgive me if I don't know the technical terms. BUT, as soon as I start moving again, it cools off. It only does this every once in a while and I remember my Eclipse doing the same thing, but it wound up that just the thermostat was broken. Has anyone else had this problem? Advice please? :-)
700watts
Haven’t had it happen to me but, it sounds like either your thermostat or the fan isn't working when you’re sitting still....I wouldn't keep letting it get hot, or you will warp the heads. mrmako
^^^^ What he said. You should have the fans looked at. If they don't run, the engine does not cool properly. If they're OK, then it could be the thermostat. Have a mechanic look at it.
aimijo6226
Good to know. I don't normally. I really panic about things like that. The fans seem to be running fine. Can the compressor overheat the rest of the car if I need an AC recharge?
rao
It sounds like the fans. If it was the thermostat then moving at speed wouldn't make the car cool off. Rob IF YOU CARE ABOUT YOUR CAR YOU SHOULD NEVER DRIVE IT
aimijo6226
Anyone know how easy/ cheap that is?
rao
Depending on when you bought your car and how many miles it has it could be free The question is if it is the control or the fans themselves. aimijo6226
Bought the car 6 months ago and its got slightly under 50,000 miles on it. :-) BUT I didn't get the 37,500 mile service that the warranty says I need, so I wasn't sure if that voided it.. So how can I find out about those fans? Because they LOOKED like they're running, but again, I'm just a girl, if I knew what I was talking about, I wouldn't ask you guys! :-P
rao
I am pretty sure that anybody can tell if a fan is spinning j ust don't use your hand to check it The first thing is to check if the coolant is full and check the cap(s) if the coolant is full and the fans work then I would suspect the cap(s). aimijo6226
I REALLY need to do a coolant flush... I'll start with that and work my way through! Thanks for all the suggestions!
sbenny
I had the same problem with my 2001 LGT with 182k miles. The solution for me was a the radiator screen was dirty. My mechanic used a special air tool that allowed him to blow off all the debris for free. He said he sees this all the time. I never had a problem since.Hope this helps.
