Detailing My Car

Recommended Posts

I was thinking of detailing my car for the first time, its 3 years old, has had coats of random waxes put on, and gets washed by a car wash every week.

now, i know the basics of this, but was wondering if this would be a good choice of products:

1) was with NXT wash

2) Clay Bar (clay magic)

3) wash

4) 3m swirl remover (will have to see what they have)

5) wash? (clean the wheels before waxing polishing)

6) polish/wax with liquid glass (possibly open, already purchased it but my friend works at the store so returning will be no problem)

seem good?

i have 4-5 microfiber cloths, a shami, wool wash mit, and a orbital polisher. anything else i will need? my car is black, has a few swirl marks from previous owner) also do i need to be afraid of "burning the paint" with a polisher or is it rather easy to avoid?

Too much washing in there. You only need one good wash.

Here is what I used on the wagon last week. I spent about 60 bucks on everything (which included a bucket, microfiber towels, a mit, all the meguiars stuff below, & synthetic absorber to dry with)

I bought all all Mequiars products (I have had good experience with them)

1.) Wash (two bucket method with wash mit) - Deep Crystal Wash Liquid

2.) Dry with one of those synthetic absorbers

3.) Clay Bar with Quik Detailer Spray (front to back motion)

4.) Step 1 - Paint Cleaner Wax (Wax on/Wax off)

5.) Step 2 - Polish (Wax on/Wax off)

6.) Step 3 - Carnuaba Wax (Wax on/Wax off)

7.) Windex the windows, clean the wheels, add tire shine

Exterior done - That is around a 4-5 hours process but it gets the job done.

The interior is another couple of hours. :)

The paint cleanser is not a wax. Instead of going carnuba I would go synthetic and maybe next weak another layer of synthetic and then after that maybe a carnuba a week after that.

I belive you want to seal then wax.

That sealan is awsome by the way. It will last you too, I have been usin it for 2 years and I'm only on my 2nd bottle.

A dime sized application will do a 1/4 panel and door. It's also very easy to apply and remove.

Denial is your best friend

The 3M swirl remover is a really really mild swirl remover. Mostly it is just going to fill the swirls and won't remove much of it at all. On a scale of 1 to 10 with 1 being water and 10 being 1500 grit sandpaper, 3M SMR is about a 2 or maybe 3. That is an accepted evaluation of the product by all professionals too.

If you want to get anywhere near serious with car care then you can't do a whole lot of good shopping at PepBoys. You are going to have to go online and get things that really work. They just don't sell professional products at auto part stores or WalMart. http://www.Danase.com is a forum sponsor and they have great products. I actually wrote up some product suggestions for them that they posted on their site. They stopped carrying the Four Star Products polishes, but the Danase Swirl Abolishers are just as good. I would at least get the level 2 grade polish for what you are trying to accomplish.

I agree with OCDetails. I ordered the Danese Swirl Abolisher kit (on OCDetails recommendations) and was able to get all the swirls out of my car using a porter. They are easy to use and don't leave a dull shine or haze after using the compund, so no need to polish if you are strapped for time.

If you are going to go all-out and order a new line of products, I recommend the Prima line from Detailer's Paradise. Just did my yearly detail with their kit... very nice stuff and well priced for boutique products.

Wolfgang gave me some of their glaze and sealant to test when they first hit the market. It's good stuff--nice "wet look" on dark cars.

Really? How long ago was that? Just curious...

I love Wolfgang. It was my favorite product on my RGB subie. It doesn't do the same thing for silver and 'phantom grey' that I have now, but for dark colors it is a show stopper. Definitely worth the money. I won't say it is the "best" since nothing can really claim that in all conditions, but it is in the top three products that I've ever used, and that is saying something. I've been a product tester and review specialist for many many years and have tested and tried hundreds of car waxes and sealants. I hadn't ever used anything like Wolfgang when it hit the market.

Because I am a ridiculous show off, and also because these are some pretty slick examples of the product, here are some Wolfgang pictures. The light isn't the best in some of them, but sometimes it is the way your car looks in low light that really dictates what product you pick. I'm more of a direct sunlight kind of guy when I pick my products and Wolfgang is one of those that looks outstanding in the sun and even better when the shade comes to play.

^ Nice work! A couple of months ago I detailed my car and used meguiars #2 polish then NXT sealant. It looked great but I was a little disappointed with how long it lasted. (After about 2 washes with meguiars car wash the water no longer beaded) Could I do the same process again and add a wax at the end, or just do a polish/wax? What's best? Oh, I forgot to mention the car is silver.
