1-off 5-off ?????

I searched but did not find.

I have a 2005 Legacy 2.5 GT Lim

When I put the key in and turn it once(not to the on position, but where the radio comes on) and I push the button by the gas gauge I get the Trip A, Trip B, and then 1-on and 5-on. If I push and hold the button, they change to 1-off or 5-off. What does this do?

It's actually I-on and S-on. The I on and off controls the illumination around your gauges (the red rings). The S on and off controls the sweep of the needles when you first start the car.

So what exactly does this do. Is it to turn off the (wicked awesome) gauge sweep? Does it turn off or dim the illumination?

Just requesting clarification

Edited for clarity.

O.K. I'm the dork that would turn it off. I turned the illumiation off and left the sweep on for a few months just to shake things up. It's back to normal now.

Someone actually came up with something new on this topic. As beat into the ground as the 1-off 5-off indicator is, I thought we'd just be goin over the same stuff, time and time again. I can't believe SOA would change sumthin like that. The fact that they actually put time into changing such a small, pointless detail is reason why these cars cost as much as they do. Think of if they didn't bother with stuff like that, on every feature, how much less R&D time there would be.

Why can't they leave well enough alone?
