sp468732
I read in the manual today that it is bad for the car to run it down much more than a quarter tank because sediment can get stirred up and be pumped into the engine. My question is, if I've ran the car down almost to empty since buying it new, is it ok to let it get near empty? If I run it down just about every time, there shouldn't be enough of a chance to build up sediment, right?
fweasel
I was under the impressions that's why they installed a fuel filter. ignore him, he'll go away.
fonts
My understanding is that it puts undue strain on the fuel pump.
BigBad
Never had a problem running mine down near empty. I have run it down until the yellow low gas light pops on and then fill er up.
rao
It i s not sediment that hurts the fuel pump, it the lack of gas that the fuel pump uses for cooling. I wouldn't worry about it for 2 reasons - 1. even when the light is on there are a few gallons in the tank which is plenty to keep the pump (or a decent part of it submerged) and 2. who cares What you don't want to do is run out of fuel completely all of the time, ultimately that will likely cause damage, but even then it is only the fuel pump, whcih can be replaced. Rob IF YOU CARE ABOUT YOUR CAR YOU SHOULD NEVER DRIVE IT
