i hate to say it, but the is-f does nothing for me.

The IS-F has the all new 5.0L V8 designed for the LS600h. Its mated to the 8 spd auto (seems like their should be another option as well) which maximizes power and fuel economy. 0 - 60 in under 5 seconds. I just hope it handles better than my bro's IS300

What is the price premium going to be for the F's?

The IS 250 starts at $30,000. The 350 at $35,000 which is pretty good for the as much car as you are getting. I would say the IS-F will be at least $43,000 since it has an all new V8.

Most IS350's I have seen are more like 40-43K

I'd say the F's would start around 50-55K

Well yeah, theyre 40k when you start adding options.

There's no way they will start at 50k. Too high. The IS buyer is different from the GS or LS buyer. The one's with that kind of money go for the 335i, which starts at $40k and can be had in a convertabile

Idk, I don't like it as much either. It's a great car and all, but isn't that V-8 heavy? In terms of handling, I'd see that as a major penalty --- in terms of straight line performance I guess that weight is negligible. And I don't like the 8-speed either. That's for luxury cars. A regular manual gearbox or an automated manual sort of thing would work better. It's just not sporty to have an automatic like that...

^^as far as pricing, $50 - $55k is probably a good bet. Lexu need not worry about target market overlap between IS and GS owners. The GS just isn't sporty... The IS-F owners are more of your M3 types who wouldn't be interested in a GS anyway. Look at the way the ES and IS overlap in terms of price; each car is for a specific type of person, rather than a specific price point.

I would want the manual transmission too, but as far as automatics go, the 8 speed is a pretty neato transmission. ....not understanding why they arent putting that into their GX and LX SUVs which are just now getting 6 speeds. Ford proved along 4 years ago that SUVs with more gears = better gas mileage. Interesting that Lexus took so long to get on that.

8 speed is a waste of time. A higher overdrive gear= better gas mialage. If this car is not offered in a standard gearbox every one of the lexus execs deserves to be punched in the face.

GM managed to get thier camaros to have acceptable gas mialage by adding a super tall 6th gear and CAGS. CAGS is basicly a device that forced the shift lever to bypass 2nd and 3rd gears for increased gas mialage. At low load and low RPM it basicly forced a 1-4 skip shift. People that removed CAGS and went through the 1-2-3-4 shift sequence noted a reduction in city gas milage.

Mmm, I dunno. Look at the LS460. Its about 1100 lbs heavier than a Camaro and it has about 50 more horsepower. With the 8 speed it achieves 19 mpg city, 27 hwy vs. a Camaro's 18 city, 25 hwy. And again, if the Camaro were as heavy as an LS, it's mileage would be worse. The proof is in the numbers.

Now, the Corvette is an impressive machine. More power than an LS, but also lighter.

Well look at the final drive and RPM at 60mph in top gear. The number of gears has very little to do with gas mialage. Its more of the TOP gear and how tall it is. The car can have 2 gears and still get the same gas mialage as a 12 speed car.

Logically when they do highway mialage where they just stick the car in its top gear and take measurements. The car does not know the diffrence between being in 5th gear 60mph at 2000 rpm vs. 8th gear 60mph at 2000 rpm.

Also comparing 2 diffrent engines in diffrent cars does not prove anything. The LS engine is probably also far more efficent.

Well fine then look at Mercedes. They switched to 7 speeds, different gearings, better gas mileage. Obviously they are all doin something right.

I agree that 8 gears is alot, but 5 speed automatics probably seemed weird when 3 speeds prevailed.
