Review: BC-BR series coilover for Legacy GT!!!

OK, now that i have had a full month to drive on these things and beat the hell out of em i can finally write a review. This install was done on a stock 2006 Subaru Legacy GT Spec B.

First and foremost when you recieve these things at the door you are amazed at the quality of them. They are all alloy with great camber plates on top. The adjusters up top are real easy to use, no tools needed. Just use your fingers to turn the knobs and you are set to go auto-x, hit the track or take that occasional long drive. They are also height adjustable from the base of the strut. This does not compromise the spring travel at all. For me this is the first type of coilover i have had without a fixed base. And of course the bling factor is such that of a true Subaru. In black and gold fashion these coilovers look so pretty i only wanted to hang them on the wall behind the bar!

Install is super easy, just like replacing a stock strut for another. All the tabs and such are built in to the strut housing and are in the proper locations for your brake and abs lines to bolt to. Adjusting the coilovers is just as easy with the base that is independent of the strut assy. You can easily turn the base down or up the sturt body to determine your ride height. Adjusting the springs is just like any other coilover with two collars at the base of the spring. Of course you will still want to get a proper alignment and corner balance from your local specialist so that you can get the most out of your new purchase.

Now for the ride quality.

First impressions. Amazing! I could not beleive how smooth yet responsive the car actually was. The steering input completely changed for the better, understeer seemed to virtually disappear and sway was totally elimnated! The horrible squat you get out of the stock setup, gone! This turns faster launches and track times all around. While being such a great setup for hard driving and track events it is still a great setup that you can drive every day on the road. To work, the store or just for a spirited drive down your nearby twisty. This is truly a coilover that seperates itself from the rest of the crowd by not being so harsh on a normal drive. It even passes the wife test! Top hats aren't loud and clunky either like others that i have owned and driven.

Long term impression.

Now that i have had them in for about a month, i have really seen what an improvement these have made to the car. Figure me, a person who has really only owned Impreza's (as far as Subaru goes) that is now in a bigger, heavier, more plush vehicle from that of pure beast. I still want to be able to drive the Legacy like i was able to drive any of my Impreza's. This coilover allowed me to do this. I really didnt think that i would be happy from such a "streetable" coilover. Especially coming out of DMS 40's, DMS 50's, Tein Flex, Tein RA among others that i have put in cars that i have built for other people. I just couldnt beleive when we set this car loose on the roads that it handled so well. Even when driven hard at auto-x the car did nothing but impress. Not just me, but others as well.

Finishing up the review I really dont think you will find a better piece for the price or infact for a higher price. This is a product that has just thrilled me though and through. First one in a long time!

Enjoy the pictures.

This is right after the install. No corner balance or proper height adjustment.

I bought them from ImportImagaeRacing.

No i am not selling my stock setup as i might be getting a company car soon, which means the Spec B will have to go :( I will be replacing it with a new Z4 coupe 3.0si!

Jersey potholes, amazingly well! i was surprised that they worked good with the holes.

Boostjunkie - thanks for the correction description.

I actually didnt recieve too much info on these coilovers as i was testing them. From what ive been told they are 30 way adjustable dampening.

I checked out Import Image Racing. Good find. Curious: do they make a Legacy version that they don't list on their site or did you get one of the other models and they fit? looks like they have ones for Forester and STI. Just wondering...

Just call Josh at Importimageracing.com He would have more info on when these will be completely available. I was lucky and able to get the first set made of these things.

These look like a quality product and another good competitor in the coilover market. I'm wondering what the range of height adjustments available. What's the minimum drop recommended with these?

How much (if at all) would comfort suffer over the standard Spec.B setup? I know the OP says they ride well, but is there any way to quantify the difference? When it comes to coilovers, I've even seen some claim the KW Variant 2's are more supple than the Bilsteins. Hmm.

I'm assuming the 3.0R rides higher than a stock Legacy GT Sedan? Can't say I've seen one (isn't there a 3.0 Outback, I know those things are on stilts). I'm asking about the height thing since alternative coil overs such as the KW Variant 2's can go pretty close to stock height, but it's outside of the manufacturer's recommended range for proper use of the strut. What I've heard is they recommend a minimum drop of 1.25" on those guys. I'm trying to get an idea if these have similar recommended ranges for the best performance and ride.
