J. D. Power survey request . . .

I can drive any car I want and I bought a Subaru because I wanted a car that would take a beating on a daily basis. I have killed old and new Fords, Chevys, Buicks, Mazdas, Hondas, Acuras, Range Rovers, Lexus, Jeeps, Toyotas, Cadillacs and Porsches. They my have better this and better that, but not one could take 1/10th the punishment I give my Subie on a regular basis.

4. Like Vimy said you don't have to start your car. However, I do agree that it would be nice to roll up the windows without having to put the key back in. The Legacy GT is the first car I've ever driven with power windows that did not allow this.

 

 

I think this is also a safety feature, so that say, you leave a kid in the car while you are filling up with gas they can't decapitate themselves.

No one has mentioned (in this thread) the black-humor climate control system of LGTs that we have to deal with, probably because it requires its own long thread. To me it's a stronger example of missing on important details. Were those engineers drunk on sake when they designed that? Did no one actually test it in real use? But even so, I still really like my 2005 LGT Ltd Wagon and just put up with (and work around) that stupid climate control system.

 

I've never had any sort of confusion over the operation of the climate control. Set it on auto, select the temp, deactivate the AC (if I don't want it) and or set the mode and it works just like any other auto climate unit I've owned.

 

What is this CC weirdness some complain about?

Nothing that you mention is about something that has gone wrong with the car.

 

All your points are about design features that you don't like, but would have known about if you had researched more before buying.

I'd hope a $48,000 Acura is a little better filled with high quality creature comforts than my $24,600 LGT. It had better be, because it can't move like mine and it can't carry more people or stuff. So it's got to be better somewhere.

 

LoveMySpecB, you need to stop crying. You shouldn't expect your sport sedan to babysit your kid's inattention. You shouldn't expect it to compete with more expensive cars on their own terms of creature comforts even though it smokes them on its own terms- being a damn good car.

 

It is what it is. Nothing was misrepresented.

Thanks for all the comments from everyone. Basically proves my point. Everyone seems to be making excuses or rationalizing why Subaru does this or does not do that.

 

This is not about competing with more expensive cars. This particular car already offers all the features found on the Acura and other manufacturers' cars. They're just implemented differently. And, they're implemented in a manner that shows absolutely no forethought. As for doing "research" before buying a car, I did plenty. The features I'm complaining about are not things typically found in "research". FWIW, the review last year (Road and Track?) gushed about how this car handles. I couldn't agree more. There was no mention of how basic features are implemented.

 

Also FWIW, when I test drove the car, I asked the salesman why the radio seek buttons do not go to the next pre-set station. His response was he "thought" they could be reprogrammed.

 

So, there you have it. I'm not blaming Subaru. This is one of those "Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me" scenarios. I'll learn from this the next time I go car shopping. For those of you who can live with these annoyances and don't find them to be a big deal, more power to you. Enjoy the car. Annoyances notwithstanding, I enjoy driving this car. To get back to my original post, I would have to honestly say I can't recommend it.

That's right. It's about comparing with more expensive cars: Waaah! my Subaru's silly electronics aren't as well implemented as the most expensive Acura's!

 

For an encore, go buy a motorcycle and complain about road noise.

That is incredibly inappropriate, to denegrate a member of the armed services, simply for the fact that they serve. (they serve to defend your ability to speak in such a deplorable way, BTW...)

 

And what ignorance and bile it takes to extrapolate that someone ELSE's career choice, discredits them from speaking about an unrelated subject. How galant of you to be so tolerant of other people's freedoms.

 

If I were to reverse that logic on you, perhaps due to your ignorance on the reality of evil in the world, and their threats, you are not qualified to open your mouth about much of anything. But I don't hold that to be true.

Next time you seriously want to buy a car, take the demo home for the weekend. If the salesman takes you seriously then he will let you.

Simply adore the car, thanks. I picked it up on my last day outprocessing from active duty and have put 55,000+ fun filled miles on it. I didn't buy into anything, my unit just kind of got told to go.

 

Anyhoo, I paid $24,600 for it. I'd rather have two of these things than one MDX. Eletronic appliances belong in the living room, while powertrain and suspension belong on the road. The suspension could be better, but I've never felt the need to upgrade it. Other than losing the 2.5 GT off the back and losing the DRLs and seatbelt chime, it's bone stock.

 

A car is a tool; a collection of compromises. It is what it is and dollars keep everything in perspective. If you want a great drive, get a real car. If you want to commute on your living room couch, spend twice as much and get an SUV filled with bells and whistles. Just don't expect anything but contempt when you whine that your apple doesn't taste like an orange. Especially in a room full of car guys.

My apologies for my earlier outburst. I was venting and got carried away. Incredibly, for someone who has seen and experienced life in Iraq, you probably realize that complaining about seat belt chimes and such, in the grand scheme of things, was pretty pointless anyway. Good luck.

Interesting to see who chose the high road, says much about character. Props from your neighbor.

 

But I too hate the chime. My driveway is over 1/8 mile long, and I always take my seatbelt off on the way in. The first thing I'm going to do is find the fix for it. Not really a big deal.

 

Maybe I'm old, but I've owned an number of cars that killed the power windows when the key was pulled. I don't have kids so I know if my windows are down. My Passat let me close the windows and sunroof from the door lock - that was sweet.

LNeilB- We used to be closer neighbors. I spent four years working in Brat. To save you some time: Turn the key to run, then buckle & unbuckle your belt 20 times. It's not as tedious as it sounds. Kill the key, then start up and enjoy. You'll probably get a few bings when the instruments are coming up, but coasting home in your driveway will be silent.

That's the method for temporarily disabling the seat beat chime. As fast as you can say click 6 times or 22 times is as long as it takes to override the default settings.

harrydog, Could you be a little more specific? I'm 36 years old and have had 37 different vehicles. Some costing $60,000 plus. Not one of them has lasted to 30,000 without some MAJOR issue like a transmission failure, total electronics systems meltdown, constantly fouling plugs, steering rack blowouts, CVs, A/C compressors and so on.

If it doesn't make the car go faster; it's really not an option that I'm interested in. And I'm sorry but paying the extra $5000 for a limited to get leather seats, a sunroof and a couple extra buttons, come on. Again, Subaru makes RALLY TYPE VEHICLES, not overpriced status symbols. This is real funny to me. Know your product before you buy it. I got exactly what I expected. Nothing more and nothing less.

Power windows, tilt, air and cruise. What else do you really need. At least they put in cup holders unlike Porsche. I've spent over $3000 on my Range Rover fixing annoying electronic issues in the last year alone. That is a lot of parts I could be putting under the hood of my Subie instead.

Too many short on-ramps? Too many snow drifts? Too much mud? I don't know. I just drive the crap out of em. Most of them had electical issues and some I just killed the automatic transmissions because I drive them like a stick. A few got totaled in accidents(none my fault). Point being that I have owned about one of everything from an Escort to a $50,000 Cadillac and an old Army Jeep to a $60,000 Range Rover and I have learned that the drivetrain is most important to ME. All the extra features don't mean squat if the car doesn't start and drive.

I don't think I have ever got into this car and said "man I wish this thing had..."

Someone may have already said this somewhere in the thread, but they can't invalidate your warranty for mods. they can only refuse to cover a problem that was caused by a mod.

 

Years ago I had a delivery job. The pharmacy had a Nissan pickup with an incredibly annoying seatbelt chime. I fixed it by simply unplugging the wire going to the seatbelt. I don't know if this is possible with the Leggy, but it might be. If not, there must be a way to cut the wire and install such a connection. Unless you short something, I'm not seeing a possibility for damage.

Looks like we have crossed paths. I lived in Chester, Londonderry and East Derry. Graduated from Pinkerton. I have been in VT since the mid nineties, and Southern NH growth is amazing to see.
