j255c
I was observed going 86 in a 55 by radar on the taconic. This is not a minor ticket, in fact i just looked it up and it will add 8 points onto my liscense. Luckily I have 0 right now. Advice? Is this a situation where a lawyer might be needed? Thanks, Jeff 06 TB EVO IX SE stock turbo monster subaru hater

Thanks, Jeff Do you think this is a situation where a lawyer might be needed? --> were your rights violated? A good option is to use one of the many "we fight traffic tickets" companies which generally consist of ex-cops and paralegals who can usually have the ticket reduced for far less than what a lawyer would charge. AWD_Rules3830
First of all ... get a good radar detector, i have a V1 and don't go anywhere without it. I would suggest a lawyer yes. Edit- damn you live in NY ... well your F**ked, they dont do plea bargains there anymore ... to the best of my knowledge. Get a lawyer anyway and see if you have a chance. I love my car ... basically.
j255c
i have an escort 9500. I had an off duty following me, who i thought was just some guy trying to catch up with me the whole time which kinda freaked me out, who called up ahead to an on duty cop who got me, radar went off to late. No more turbo swap in the plans for a while Pretty much i am pwned, im afraid in the court shes going to use his call for substantial evidence, or can she not do that? 06 TB EVO IX SE stock turbo monster subaru hater

AWD_Rules3830
Same cituation as you (or worse). Got a 91 in a 55 two weeks ago. guys, you have to remember that unless you have a pace car/rabbit a radar detector is not a license to speed unless you know only constant on stationary radar is used in your area. im kinda lucky because they can only do stationary enforcement, speed has to be supported by visual evidence. I love my car ... basically.

This sounds like good advice. I got ticket many years ago when I had a radar detector. If you go to court the cop will probably mention you had a radar detector and you are not going to get any slack at all. red beast
No offense to the OP, but the Taconic is notorious for speed traps. Why would you be going 86? Please tell me at least it was late at night or early in the morning.. not only that but it has always been a dangerous parkway.
geddyup
the real problem here is the state of NY. Not only is the place a dump but they try to steal your hard earnned money as fast as you make it. Last time I got pulled over I was going 110 in a 75 and recieved 0 points and a 65.00 fine. Just pack up and head west and you can drive for the most part as fast as you want

Guest
Get a lawyer. Just don't fool yourself you can do without one. I don't like lawyers, but they are part of the system and they, unfortunatelly, set up this f'ed system. You'll pay more in the end if you don't. badfish11
I previously got a ticket for 94 in a 65 on 684, NYS trooper got me. I went to court w/o a lawyer, explained nicely to the cop that I was an idiot at the time I was speeding, he reduced it to 80 in a 65. Paid somewhere around $200 and got on w/my life. Don't quote me on this, but any points you will get for this ticket drop off your license in 18 months. So if you get 8 points on the day of your court appearance, be good for 18 months, then you have 0 points again. Can anyone else confirm?
Guest
Varies from state to state. E.g. in NJ points drop after 1 ticket-free year, but stay on insurance for 3 years for prolonged ass raping effect. Fight!
laz
Anything out of the 5 boroughs is a different story. I once got two speeding tickets two different days in one week. This was during college years. Luckily it was in two different upstate counties, so they both sent me to driving school, got the points dropped, and just paid the fine. In NYC there is no getting out without a lawyer. Totally different game. X ---
dc78
I recently just found out the hard way that in NY if you have 6 or more point on your license in a 18th month period you are givin a Driver Assesment Fee by the state. It's a $300 fine that you can pay all at once or in $100 payments for 3 yrs. if you don't pay it, they suspend your license. Actually just made my 1st payment of $100 today NY SUCKS
