I started in the late 70's with "Fuzzbusters" & "Super Snoopers". Graduated to Escort in the early 80's when you had to order in advance. It was the best on the market for a long time. My friends had Radio Shack (Lousy) and early Bels. At the time they were really poor, and nothing could even stand up to the Escort. I then bought a Passport, and had problems with it during the "restructering" years. I got fed up with Escorts excuses for not fixing my detector because of pending bankruptcy, and bought my V-1 about '96 or '97. I'm one of those who will never go back, mainly because of the arrows. I just got back from Vegas this last weekend, and it is really nice to know where the signal is coming from. I can believe the new Bel and the new Escort products are really good, but you are never going to convince me they're better than the V-1. Just as an aside, no moving violations since 1972, and literally hundreds and hundreds of miles in excess of 100 mph.

+4,738 for the V1. Wow blackheart, your experience is quite similar to mine. In 1985 I got my first detector, a Cobra Trapshooter. Loved it. When it finally died, I went through a series of lesser detectors, a Whitsler, a Uniden...until the mid 90's when I got a Passport. Like you, I was less than satisfied w/ it. In 1998, I discovered the V1 and have never looked back. Still have the same one and although I could upgrade, I see no reason. NEVER will I drive without arrows again!

Have owned both the Escort x85(blue) and the Valentine. Ive had them both for a year now and can say hands down the valentine is better from far distance and the arrow indicator Lights are very helpful plus it has two sensor front and back, yes it can be a little annoying but if you want the best this is the one. Valentines has my vote

^ +1 The sensors/antennas have to have a clear "line of sight." "Remote" units, thus, FanTheFlames, would be your way to go.

There's another thread around here where I showed (crappy) pictures of my V1 display in my ashtray with the main unit above my rear view mirror. It's been like this for at least a year and has served me well. When I don't want anyone to see my display, I close the ashtray. It seems to be really difficult to make out the detector above the mirror from the rear because of the tint band. I'd find the thread myself but I'm trying to get out the door right now. :)

My Dad has V1 hardwire on his Turbo I have Passport 8500 X-50 Red Brother Has 8500 Standard on his A4 Mom has On-star on the ESV :) Personally I like mine the best, (we've owned detectors since they were first started BTW including a couple crappy ones like that VRCD Cloaking device), Can't go wrong with either but it really doesn't matter which has extended laser range because once you are hit you are done UNLESS you hook up the Passport SR7 Laser Shifter which hooks up to the 8500. The Valentine has no such module that I am aware of, but is a great detector nonetheless. If you are looking for user customization expandability and a more concealed look (For V1 you have to buy the Concealed module seperately) go with Passport. If you need to know what direction the cop is in to decide whether you should slow down or not (I hit the brakes whenever i get a K, I don't really care from where and the fact that it increases frequency with closer distance allows you to determine by sound anyway) go with V1. Bel RX did well on Radar Test so I would assume its a pretty nice detector, especially with voice alerts. You can't go wrong with any of these ones. Stay away from Rocky Mountain Radar units especially the PHANTOM III Super magic edition laser jammer with built in karma meter and high school alma mater recognition. Although it looks like a Phazer gun and has flashy lights and makes woo woo sounds, it still won't save you or jam a single signal. They say they will pay for your ticket, but your ticket in order to be reimburced must cost less than the Scammer I mean Jammer.

Here is mine. I have the display in the cubby between the vents, where it takes up the first < 1/2" at the bottom. I keep the door closed unless I am worried about lasers... So far, so good. The only shifting it has done has done is on an SUV though  (I got it about a week ago) Ted

On a side note... I got my Valentine One last week and I was all excited to come home this past weekend since it was a 200 mile drive. When I finally finished picking up everyone I decided that now would be the best time to break it out and mount it. To my great surprise I couldn't get the lighter adapter to fit into our lighter port that's in our ashtray. I was kind of angry since I really didn't want a wire going from my windshield to the armrest storage box but it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Oh well I'm planning to hardwire it anyways but did anyone else have this problem?
... UNLESS you hook up the Passport SR7 Laser Shifter which hooks up to the 8500.
Actually, the Escort "Laser Shifter" unit is called the "ZR3." :) The "SR7" is their "package deal," incorporating both the radar detector unit with integrated ZR3 emitter/sensor and controls, as well as remote display. The Shifter ZR3 unit is actually a stand-alone when purchased with an 8500 X50, which enables you the OPTION of "linking" the two units together for integrated control. This integration, however, is purely an end-user preference issue.
The Valentine has no such module that I am aware of....
Definitely true, but paired with the Blinder units (totally different manufacturer), this combination may be the best of both worlds, albeit a slightly more expensive one than most other integrated radar-detector/laser-jammer combos. However, considering now that Bel and Escort are essentially one and the same company, they truly only present one set of products with *nearly* identical function and performance, with, independently, the V1 and Blinder pairing being the only true competitor. In the end, I still believe that it's up to the end-user to choose a unit/combo that best fits his/her usage profiles and desired features, as well as best-matches local enforcement habits/practices. Whichever way one chooses to go with these top-flight items, it's always a win. :)

So obviously the did something strange with the socket design. Oh well. It's not that hard to hardwire the V1. Just pop off the map light/sunroof control. Splice the wire into the auto dimming mirror power wire. I ended up wedging the fork terminal onto one of the screws that attach the map light unit to act as the ground. A ground lug that's a loop would have made it easier, but I manage to get it to say in two try. I have my remote displace mounted on the dash so I can see it above the turn signal and below the dash display. Some people mount the remote display really low which requires you to look down. I prefer to have mine up high so I can still see the road and the display.
more subby bs. i run my passport 8500 x50 off of my cig lighter, and i still use it about 4-5 times a day to light a cig while in the car drivin to/from work/class.

Work hard. Play even harder.

IMO, this warning from Subaru about the cigarette lighter use is not indicative of a different design. There's really nothing unusual about a Subaru lighter socket that I've seen. With all of the different designs for items to plug into a lighter socket, there's a good chance that some of them put too much pressure on the socket walls and warp them. There's a bigger chance of damaging the spring that retains the heating element during warm up. If it's bent, it may not release at the proper time and overheat. This isn't a Subaru specific situation as I believe I've heard this warning from other manufacturers in the past. I've never had an issue with my V1 plug fitting any socket in any of my cars. I always like to hardwire them, but initially I use the plug to try things out. I wonder if the newest V1 plug is different than the one I've got?

i am gonna write a bit of a different post. i had a radar detector, and used it as a sort of a nicorrete gum for speeding. i eventually stop speeding and dumped my escort on ebay, it was no longer nesecary. i don't kno how mnay of oyu guys tend to speed or not, but save yourself $300 and dump the habit, i paid for it twice already and it was maddd expensive keeping my license clear of points. this is not to say that i stay perfectly in tun with speed limits, but i try and have not gotten in trouble since. i hope some of you will take my advice.

I try not to speed, but it's just too darn easy in the LGT. My Beltronics Pro RX65 just keeps me in check and reminds me to stay near the speed limit. I do seem to speed less now that I've had my LGT for a year, but I'll probably keep the radar detector.

Not speeding is down right dangerous here. No one here drives 55 mph on the freeways. The city I live in, the local PD will ticket you for 28 in a 25 mph zone. Ever try driving 25 mph on a wide street, you are pretty much idling the entire time. The average speed most people drive is 30-35. And of course the cops like to set up speed traps in these areas.

obviously "tradition" of where you live apply to what i said, i shouldve sent "dont' do shit that will get u tickets in your area" i'm in NJ, so anything voer 10 mph on highways is fairgame for some asshole cop who needs to fill his ticketbook for the day

+1 for the Valentine, I can't live without the arrows and counter. All detectors false, but the arrows and counter help you to determine if it is a false alarm or not. The 8500 is VERY good, but it still lacks some of the features of the V1. Also, I just sold my 1.7 version V1 for almost 300 dollars! and used that money toward a brand spankin' new V1 with Pop and better laser. I used to replace my detectors every year or so, and part with the old one for 50 bucks. The only one I had longer than that was an Escort 7500 that I used for a year and a half until I tried the V1.
