The Airplane Grill is Officially Dead

Don't let the word "fired" drive your view of this situation. He may have had a disagreement with Subaru about its future plans and they mutually decided it was better to part. Being fired can be a way to leave with certain package benefits.

Mabybe when Sapatinas realized that Subaru was cutting its product line down to three cars in three trim levels, with all of them being grocery haulers or LLBean trendy, except the Impreza Sti, he decided there was not much for him to do or be interested in. Ya think?

Funny how they are backing away from blaming the airplane grill on him now, but back then they were saying it was his influence, and that he might have took the design from Alfa.

If Subaru would modernize the styling a bit, it could make a great commuter car! (it also needs some nice wheels and low-profile tires.)

Maybe they brought Zapatinas on to use as a scapegoat if the design flopped. The design flopped, so they blamed Zapatinas and "fired" him.

It was probably all pre-arranged beforehand.

Nice way to cover their backsides.

The first link is from Subaru. Zap did do both the B9 Scrambler and the R1 Concept. Both are good looking implementations IMO. The other two articles are the words of the writers/editors... not Subaru's

Obviously, but car reviewers get their information from Subaru. In the case of the last article, the writer got the information from Zapatinas himself.

They get some information from a manufacturer... a lot is at their creative liberties. They bed the truth and/or take things out of context to make a point. The interview above clearly states Zap had nothing to do with the airplane grill... yet leftlane news, Jalopnik, and Autoblog all try to make it seem Zap and his ties to Alfa Romeo are responsible for the grill. Zapatinas could have been referring to the next Impreza for all we know.

Are we sure that Subaru is a Japanese company?

Subaru seems to have a strategy and business plan horizon of about six months, not five years.

Zapatinas is in and bam, he is out. The Legacy "sport performance" market attack to capture Audi/BMW3 market share is in and now it is out. The Airplane Grill is in and now it is dead. LegGT Wagon 5MT is great now it is gone. LegacyGT wagon outperforms BMWxi3 wagon and now Legacy wagons are gone. All this in less than 18 months.

These guys seem to be all over the floor in pieces. Impreza and Outback are paying the bills for sister products lost in total confusion. IMHO Meanwhile, Acura introduces the RDX.
