What do you think of this grill idea...

Ok, been toying with the idea of painting the center chrome section of the stock grill matte charcoal/black to match the surrounding plastic. Some will say..just buy one of the many mesh grills available. Well, I'm cheap and my $$$ is going for other mods. Anyway, here's a pic (photoshop) of what I'm thinking of doing. What do you think?

Also, got some questions. Now I want to keep my current grill incase I don't like the end result....so I need to purchase as stock grill (again cheap) or does anyone know if just the chrome pieces on either side of the Suby emblem are removable? Perhaps I could just purchase those.

Thanks for the help.

The wings are removable.

I am in the process of painting my entire grille minus the emblem.. I'll take a picture of my sexy primer grille and post it up tonight :)

I used plasti-kote black metalic flake spray paint on my grill wings. The color is a close match to that of the interior parts of the grill. Each wing is held in place by two small screws in back. You'll have to rough them up a bit with a little light sanding to get the paint to adhere properly. While the parts list shows the wings separate from the whole grill, it doesn't list a separate part number for them.

mines done in satin black. 4 coats. I'm about to take it to another member next month and have him hack it up and put the mesh look on it.

can you unscrew the wings without taking the grill off?

two small phillips head screws on each side. think they are a little hard to see without taking the grill off.

  • 4 weeks later...

I did this a few weeks ago, before I saw this thread.... I like the blacked-out look too. It's really an easy thing to do. The grille pops off in about 30 seconds, the wings another 30. Just sanded down with 400 grit, primed with plastic adhesion promoter, and painted with some random black paint I had laying around... 3-4 coats. Looks great on my BSM car, IMHO - very subtle. I'll take some pics and post when I get the chance...
