How to Remove the LGT Chip

Recommended Posts

A few things...

This is one of the better done write-ups I have looked at...spacing, spelling, pictures, explanation, coherency, etc. Maybe he should hire out to those of you with third grade English skills.

I happen to like the STi key better than what we have. I would prefer an unchipped key since I hate the extra weight and volume in the pants pocket.

He got the job done with the tools he had. Maybe it was a Ginsu knife...don't you guys watch late night TV...they will cut through anything and mom will never know you even used it. Plus, he didn't make a trip to the ER for stitches (or at least he didn't tell us).

Flame away bishes. :icon_bigg

thanks pillboy

lol rest assured

I'd love to get a smaller stripped down key. I get tired of this one in my pocket.
When I picked up my new car, the dealer told me it would cost around AUS$380 to have a key replaced!

(That's around US$266)

Presumably this covers the reprogramming cost also.

im sure you could have the sti key cut to match your stock key and then simply afix your stock key inside the coloum. that way it would still read the tranponder yet you could use the sti key as your main key.

There is a thread over at the Acurazine forum where they took a USDM Honda Accord key fob with the remote built in, transplanted the chip and swapped out the lower portion of the key. Comes out pretty nice.

I really like the JDM key, but I'm not willing to destroy my Key for this.

Nice work triskite. I could never do this.

hmm I'm trying to figure out how to get this chip integrated into the sti key... but was disappointed to find out the key is better made than I thought- the blue plastic/rubber just coats metal underneath... it is not solid:

Any ideas where the chip could go?

(I sorta like the look of it now)

Thanks for the walk through! I've been thinking about an STi key for a long time but was afraid the destroy a key trying to figure it out. Scooby Mania sells a STi key blank with a transponder bubble to house the chip. Here's the link - Interior - Scooby Mania

Sounded cool so I looked into it...

Hi Will

Yes it will work out around $70.

Sorry to get you confused but there is no bubble the website is inaccurate. The bubble was never fully developed so the best place to put the chip is under the steering column.

Kind Regards

Tracy

Man this is hilarious. I don't even like the look of the STi key... but mad props for an interesting mod.

Why in the heck would you want to hold the LGT key next to the STI key just to start the car? Its a key. It starts the car. Why would you carry 2 around just for that.

I love the tools used too. A leatherman tool and a kitchen knife. Hilarious.

Wow, all that for an STi key.

Phillips Exeter currently has the largest endowment of any secondary school in the United States at a market value of $563,634,089 (per Tax Form 990). The school was established in 1781 by John and Elizabeth Phillips. Due to this, it shares a long standing (and friendly rivalry) with its sister school, Phillips Academy, also known as Andover. Like Andover, the Academy's primary Latin motto is ''Finis Origine Pendet'', meaning "the end depends upon the beginning," and it is scrolled across the bottom of the school seal. The school's secondary motto, ''Non Sibi'', located in the sun, means "not for one's self." Exeter graduates may, if they wish, receive a class ring with the school seal with the text ''Sigill Phillip

+1 for Triskite - Just wanted to give you props for your hard work and dedication. People just don't understand what's it like to be a man, using basic saws and knifes, it's more of a challenge this way....Right?!

Please keep us posted, I'm dying to find out what your final key will be!!!!

Hang on a minute, I am not following this right..... you think ^^^ looks better than the stock key?

The car does come with 3 keys, you know :p

I really hope it doesn't fall off in the grocery store somewhere - "Excuse me sir, have you seen my chip?" "Yes, the chips are in the snack food isle"...

haha thanks heights

no im not

well its not so much just for the sti key...

with the chip movable like this it means that i will never have to pay the steep price for a chipped key again (and the $100+ for the dealership to reset the car/keys), and can make as many copies as i want

I slapped on some velcro just to try it out:

Yes it is a little UGLY

And when the key is turned:

Tada! gorgeous

http://legacygt.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=21453&stc=1&d=1153339966

The velcro is temporary. But I do actually prefer this

over stock.

Haha and no, it will not fall off, this is industrial strength velcro. It's been in my pocket with other keys, cell phone, etc, and hasn't budged.

But again, the velcro was to TEST IF IT WORKED.

Please save your aesthetically oriented questions and comments until later.

Thank you.

right. :icon_cool.

i'll be sure to post it, but it may not be done for a little bit.

this thread was not (necessarily) suggesting modding a stock key to what i have currently, rather it is just to document exactly where the chip is in the key. I sacrificed one of my keys for the greater good (and eventually to have a cooler key). You're welcome.

Ahhhh.. c'mon, we're just being.. ourselves..

honestly, it is kind of a neat way to have extra keys... and if you get carjacked, just rip the chip off and the carjacker won't be going anywhere!!!!

But.. to protect the chip, I would find something suitable to have it in that can be clipped on and off your keychain if you need to share the chip - which leads me to my next question, if you share the car, why not just have your key on a removable keychain clip so you can detach it from your house/work keys quickly? That's what I do so I don't have all my keys hanging from the ignition - just the key and fob.

lol excuse the sarcasm i dont actually care at all i laughed at pretty much every single response. and my original post.

yeah well i guess i could adhere it hidden in the car somewhere (the velcro would be suitable for this) and then whoever needs to use the car (there are 10 people in my household atm) can just bring a copy (chipped or non-chipped) and will be able to start the car (just move the chip to the ignition circle velcro first, and hide it again when done)

that is definitely a good way to save a lot of money.

but hopefully nobody else will be driving my car soon and i can just machine the chip into my sti key
