Gunvangelion
Hello All, I recently join the forum to learn how to upgrade my 2011 Legacy 3.6R suspension. The car is just short of 130000km (~80000 miles). I removed the inner liners in the trunk area to inspect the rear suspension, but then I was shock to see on rust on the passenger side. I have attached photos, wonder if any one have experience this? I am aware the passenger side is the fuel tank side. Many thanks
DugsSin
That is a bit of corrosion I've got no clue why. Haven't seen that part of my Legacy more than a few times but seems to be free of rust at 119K miles there at least.
creep_nu
how's the underside of the car? could be something as simple as a leaky trunk seal getting the carpet wet, or it could be rust eating up from the bottom...
FLlegacy
I would look for a bad seal on the trunk as @creep_nu mentioned. A bit of wire brushing and a rust converter should take care of that before it becomes too bad.
Gunvangelion
Thank you all, I will try to take a deeper look this weekend and the advice above.
Gunvangelion
Hello All, Just a follow up, after removing the cover and checking the gasket, I think it is some surface rust only. will definitely clean it up before my suspension upgrade. another question, are 2 nuts suppose to be missing from the 4 bolts? This is at the center of the trunk, right behind the center rear passenger seat. Many thanks.
DugsSin
Interesting I guess only 1 nut is supposed to be missing. Don't even know what they are connected to but I will be adding one once size is determined.

FLlegacy
No nut November took on a new meaning, lol. I also found something is leaking in my trunk, so this was good timing. Edited November 28, 2022 by FLlegacy
DrD123
neither were installed in mine - wonder what they are for?
DugsSin
Given their central location I would say guide pins for differential or rear subframe member. I probably threw a nut on at some point 5~8 years ago. Will be putting winter tires on real soon and will take a look then cause the ole man ain't crawling under any car in 20 Degree weather. FLlegacy
There is no bolts/pins going upward in that area for the rear subframe or diff. I would bet they are used during assembly or were a holdover from a different seating attachment point in a different model, outback or impreza possibly. motorbreath
I'll take a look at mind this weekend, but don't remember any corrosion in that area when I replaced the rear suspension last year.
