SIDrive
Changing out the timing belt and noticed that no matter what I do the passenger side marks will not fully line up. Passenger top lines up but the passenger bottom and passenger upper to bottom pulleys are 1/2 tooth off. Crank and drivers side are spot on. Do not have the tensioner on yet. Am I over reacting and this is normal? Got 120,000 on the odometer. Way past time to change it. Factory belt and tensioner looked surprisingly good. xt2005bonbon
You should be fine. I believe the intake AVCS causes this. If the teeth count is fine between the various marks, as per FSM, then it's all good.
leetdrv
its more important how the marks on the belt align to the cams. if the marks on the belt are not present you can count the teeth per FSM and make your own.
SIDrive
Can someone please point me to the FSM. silverton
You should be fine, but won't hurt to double check.
dgoodhue
It looks like a tooth off to me. It isn't paint marks, it is the notches that have to line up. At least on my 5th Gen, if you are off by a tooth, it causes a error code and the check engine light will be illuminated. The 1st time I did my timing belt I made this mistake and I had to redo it. SIDrive
Friend of mine stopped over and double checked the marks. Put her back together and she fired right up. Thanks everyone! SIDrive
The ONLY DEFINITIVE way to ensure a Subaru engine is in time is to physically count the teeth between the marks. I did try that a few times. But was not confident I tabulated all the teeth. Overall the job was not the most difficult job I've done on cars it just requires extra care on one part - putting the belt back on. It was the job I was the most anxious on when cranking over the first time for sure! silverton
I've done it so many times and still get anxious when I turn the key. Good job!
