Front oil galley plugs

Recommended Posts

So i'm trying to see if one of those front oil plugs can accommodate an oil temp sensor. Here is the post from my rebuild thread. If anyone could put eyes on it and let me know how much room is around them that would be amazing!

https://legacygt.com/forums/showpost.php?p=6042778&postcount=743

Anyone think I can fit the temp sensor in one of the front oil plugs?? Would it hit the timing belt cover? If anyone could just take a look and visualize or measure which side has more room so it can stick out without interfering with anything that would be awesome. Its the one with the wire.

Its about 1 3/8" long (about 1 13/16" with the oil plug adapter) and about an 1" width(I could make it a little bit smaller if need be).

I'm still going for the front one lol, until I see otherwise. But I just put the cover on to see how much depth I'll have.

From what I see so far, I don't understand how anything would be a problem, it can squeak by imo. The accessories ac/powersteering/alternator need to go way past the cam cover so belts and stuff aren't the problem, looks like mounting brackets.

I'm thinking if anything I could grind down some of that nub which the timing cover bolts to. Its only holding a low torque small bolt. Hmmm, I will see what I'm working with when I install more stuff.

As RacerX says, bung on oil pan and I completely agree. That's how we measure on race cars too. That way, your sensor is right in the thick of the oil rather than having fast flowing past the sensor.

Simple to do and will always be consistent unless you run it completely out of oil.

from my knowledge the main factors are pre and post oil cooler temps. Its more so a matter of preference to what your looking for.

But the oil pan is a nice spot in general to get good temp readings, so I guess you guys are right for it being a good spot for general consistent temp, cause I don't really know how the oil flows to determine which galley would be best, I prefer post oil cooler temps!...... but drilling holes and all that nonsense? I'm thinking something a lot more practical and simple. Ah and it just hit me!!!

Whats the thread for our oil pan bung? Simplest solution no drilling or fuckery, i'll just get a plug that threads to the pan and has a 1/8" npt. Basically something bigger than the one for the oil galleys. I was hoping they were the same size but its slightly smaller.

If we could find that piece in the picture that fits our oil drain then its a simple one piece solution no drilling and destroying oil pans etc.

Hmmm.... Is there a place to get a custom piece like what I'm looking for special ordered? Basically a M20 x 1.5 Flanged bolt with a 1/8" NPT Sensor port.

Surprised no one has it already..... Am I missing something?

So I am ordering this adapter and some washers.

https://www.amazon.com/Pieces-Copper-Washer-Gasket-Metric/dp/B07J2DL3KG?th=1

Hmmm I think I want bigger washers.....

its 19 bucks for the plug and another 20 for shipping..... I'm going to try out this 5-10(5 for plug, 5 for shipping) dollar plug 1st and see whats up, I'll grab a washer from home depot or something.

Hmm... thats not a bad idea, take a stock drain plug and have them drill a hole and tap it. But i'm not familiar with any shops around here who do that kind of work.

I got the pieces but it looks like the sensor is hitting that basket thing inside the oil pan..... more shenanigans... the top and bottom nut need to be flush against each other, shouldn't be able to see the thread tape.

I think I would run into the same issue as the killer b plug as well? ! It is basically the same thing I bought just another metal.

Killer B

What I bought

Sent an email to killer b to get the total length of the adapter.

So I also ordered that ocv banjo bolt with the extra port on top that Jmp recommended. It looks like i need some kind of extension or something. Thats as far in as it can go. So this is still on the table if I can get the piece I need.

Found it! The internet has everything!

https://www.amazon.com/EDGE-INDUSTRIAL-Extension-Adapter-Approved/dp/B086N32DSP

The sensor is about about 1 1/8" with the threads , trying to figure out how long of an extension I should get.

I will start with the 1 1/4" extension! Should be here Monday.

And then I find this! Exactly what I wanted something with a bigger head to give me the room!

https://www.rallitek.com/oil-adapters/7465-killer-b-oem-to-1-8npt-oil-temperature-sensor-adapter.html

Why don't I see this style on the Killer B website? The thicker head should give me the length I need to avoid the metal basket thing.

Must be old stock! Its made from an oem plug. Hmmm, I wonder if the picture is just old and I will get that new one they are making.

Just saying, you should be able to find common brass fitting at most hardware stores in the plumbing section. No need to wait for shipping.

True, but i'm limited to places like home depot/lowes level, and I prefer to sit on my ass and get free 2 day shipping from amazon, i'm near a hub I think because I get things hella quick. Also makes sharing the info for the next guy a lot easier. No rush for me, I got enough on my plate, playing with my subaru is like therapy lol.

Everything failed.... looks like I gotta find a store. I need an adapter that has like an inch and a quarter of 1/8 npt female thread to hold the entire sensor. All these adapters get narrow after the threads so the sensor cant get past the bottom of the threads.
