Subaru Bob
Folks: I am replacing the rear pads on my 2011 Subaru Legacy Premium. My local parts store supplied me with Bendix SBC 1124 (Stop by Bendix) which includes hardware. On examining the contents, there are abutment clips included, but no shims that attach to the pads. The parts store says they are not required. What is the downside of not using shims on the pads. I notice that if I bought replacement kit from Subaru, that shims are included. Comments? Alexmed2002
If the Subaru kit included something that you didn't get with the kit from the parts store, then that would lead me to believe that you probably should get shims.
creep_nu
https://www.rockauto.com/en/parts/bendix,SBC1124,brake+pad,1684 looks like the shims are already on there. if yours don't look like that you should take em back and either look at a different kit(quality control issues) or a different brand
Humble Rumble
Shims are primarily to reduce/eliminate pad noise and squealing. You CAN run without them and have your brakes work perfectly fine, but as creep_nu said, that set should ahve come with them. 2012 Legacy 3.6R Build Thread 5th Gen Legacy BM/BR Body Kit Compendium Thread
Scubaboo
Or you can just move them over from your old pads.
Alexmed2002
Or you can just move them over from your old pads. Would they have wear from previous use?
Scubaboo
Would they have wear from previous use? In my experience, not really enough to affect function.
dgoodhue
I have reused the shims before. It seems like most pads set now include them, but 20 years they didn't.
FLlegacy
A few manufacturers attach a shim pad to the brake pad backing. I use to reuse the stainless shims, but decided against it the last few times. Nothing adverse has happened, noise or otherwise. I do use the anti-squeak liquid thar comes with the hawk pads so that may be helping. Sent from my SM-G965U using Tapatalk
Subaru Bob
Thanks to all. My old shims are not reusable as they are not in good condition. I will do without and if I experience something unfavorable, I will post. But I did use anti squeal. Bob
