2011 Legacy premium rear brake pad questions

Recommended Posts

Folks:

I am replacing the rear pads on my 2011 Subaru Legacy Premium. My local parts store supplied me with Bendix SBC 1124 (Stop by Bendix) which includes hardware. On examining the contents, there are abutment clips included, but no shims that attach to the pads. The parts store says they are not required. What is the downside of not using shims on the pads. I notice that if I bought replacement kit from Subaru, that shims are included.

A few manufacturers attach a shim pad to the brake pad backing. I use to reuse the stainless shims, but decided against it the last few times. Nothing adverse has happened, noise or otherwise. I do use the anti-squeak liquid thar comes with the hawk pads so that may be helping.
