chhalter
Hello all, Just purchased an 05 Legacy GT Turbo Wagon a couple of days ago (absolutely stoked) 128,500 miles. Got a PPI done at a local Japanese car specialist and they told me it was time to replace the drive belts, which I assume is referring to the timing belt? Helped me knock 300 bucks of the purchase price, but the previous owner had the belt and water pump done at 95K. What is the standard maintenance interval like for the timing belt? Mechanic claimed they saw cracks on the belts, but need to inspect myself. If I do the repair, what's the standard life of the belt? Also, found a link to this Gates Belt kit on an older post: https://www.amazon.com/Gates-TCK328-Timing-Belt-Kit/dp/B0033DM4UA/?tag=viglink20901-20 How is this kit in terms of durability, etc? Sorry for the noob questions, stoked to be a part of the community!
Nonamedude
They are referring to the ac compressor and alternator belts. Those are due every 30k and was likely done with the timing belt so that makes sense. It's quite a bit of work to get to the timing belt do I doubt that was inspected. For the drive/accessory/ac/alternator belts (names are fairly interchangeable) gates is fine. Stay away from the gates timing belts but your need to do that every 100k so don't worry about that yet. I'll give you the obligatory, check the turbo shaft play and pull the banjo bolt before you need to buy a new engine! Check the oil often because these vehicles need it. Synthetic only every 3750 miles. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Max Capacity
The drive belts, AC, power steering can last for many years not so much a mileage thing. Any auto parts store will have good belts for about $15 each. Don't over think the drive belts. The timing belt is what you need to get right. The timing belt kit is the Asin belt check the DIY forum where there is a thread about the timing belt replacement. https://www.google.com/search?ei=p_c5Xv68Bo6k_QbupYvQCg&q=aisin+timing+belt+kit+subaru+legacy+GT&oq=aisin+timing+belt+kit+subaru+legacy+GT&gs_l=psy-ab.3..33i299l2.20812.21737..22577...0.2..0.193.378.2j1......0....1..gws-wiz.......0i71j0i22i30j0i333j33i22i29i30.lFbnjOYzHuQ&ved=0ahUKEwi-rIaZgLnnAhUOUt8KHe7SAqoQ4dUDCAs&uact=5 Edited February 4, 2020 by Max Capacity 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs.
