Radio upgrade

Recommended Posts

I want to replace my OEM radio with an aftermarket HU with Navigation. Ive search the forum and i found this

http://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php/pioneer-4200nex-installed-5th-gen-legacy-premium-257277.html

My concern is that the installation is for a 2012 Legacy, I have 2014 2.5i legacy and Im not sure if i need all of the parts that are listed in that thread. Can someone help me clarify what i need to do the upgrade? any recommendation on a different aftermarket HU?

this is what my current unit looks like

i contacted Crutchfield and they were very helpful, it seems like they dont carry the Pioneer AVH-4200NEX unit anymore

does anyone have any experience with the Pioneer AVIC-5200NEX or the Kenwood DNX573S? any recommendations?

That is probably solid, but you should definitely look at getting the octa-core version instead. They cost a bit more and run a very slightly older version of android, but have well more than double the processing power and will run much more smoothly. It is also just a matter of time before an OS upgrade is available.

I have the AVH-4800S in my 14'. Great deck. Your install will be easier as I had a factory back up camera and HK system and I wanted to retain the camera and hands free. Auto Harness Warehouse made me a harness, works great.

Word of caution, with the touch screen DVD Pioneer decks you need to either use the e-brake bypass kit or run the appropriate wire (green I believe in Pioneers case) to the parking brake or you will not be able to adjust the screen brightness or dimmer setting let alone watch a DVD when parked...

In regards to that Seicane headunit, look at the specs before you order it. The audio section stuff is far from ideal (70db S/N ratio, only 42hz-20KHz response, etc).

Basically looks like most of the Chinese low-end stuff, but with a premium pricetag.

You can buy a much better name-brand headunit for the same amount, if not less. Especially if you go used.

Completely agree with TheBeast.

The unit looks good, but will sound like Chinese AM radio station.

Niko0422,

I don't believe that there will be any difference between 2014 and 2012 installation. The wiring harnesses should look the same color wise. Just check is the OEM antenna connector is the same.

As far as I remember I ordered for my 2010:

Metra 70-7552 Radio Wiring Harness https://www.amazon.com/Metra-70-7552-Harness-2007-Up-2008-Up/dp/B000VXED54

Metra 40-SB10 Subaru 2005-Up Antenna Adapter https://www.amazon.com/Metra-40-SB10-2005-Up-Antenna-Adapter/dp/B000K53QAQ

Metra Axxess ASWC-1 Universal Steering Wheel Control Interface - https://www.amazon.com/Axxess-ASWC-1-Universal-Steering-Interface/dp/B00B4PJC9K/ref=pd_bxgy_107_img_3?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=BAKYNBHFP4T3MNJZJMK8

Pioneer radios - pick a model you like and look what else it has as an option which is different from the stock installation. As per example, I have Pioneer AVH-X490BS and I installed an aftermarket backup camera in addition, therefore I run some wires in addition to the back of the car. In addition I have a bunch of RCAs for the aftermarket amps, but I believe you want to replace the unit only, not to have anything else changed.

ASWC-1 - steering wheel interface. I have this installed as well. It started to work flawlessly, only when I realized that the instructions for my particular Subaru are wrong on their website. I reached to this conclusion after 3 fruitless talks over the phone with their representatives. I had to replace the unit I first bought, thinking it is faulty. Anyway, now everything works as it should. If you have any problems with it, just send me a p.m.

When you choose your headunit, just post the model here so we can advise you better.
