suggestion on exhahust tip extension, or cut outs on OBXT rear bumper

Recommended Posts

I have an interesting issue. Bought a lowered OBXT a while ago. The car has Stromung mufflers which were probably designed for Legacies. As a result, I suffer from bumper melting :(. I think it is actually no longer melting anymore, but it won't pass MD safety inspection until I find a way to either extend the exhaust tips or place some sheet metals between the tips and the car frame. Any suggestions on fairly inexpensive exhaust tips I could use?

My plan is to temporarily put them on to pass inspection, and then find a way to place some kind of thin sheet metal plate above the tips to avoid exhaust in the cabin (if any). That'd be the long term solution. The guy there was afraid I was getting exhaust fumes in the cabin. That's why it won't pass.

Here is a 'poor' picture I quickly took of my car last week. I'll try to provide a better picture if needed.

Sorry for the title misspelling. my bad.

here are my Dynamax tips. They are the 12" ones but are a touch long.

  • 1 year later...

Bump to my old thread

Here are some other pictures I took a while ago. I'll take some other ones.

What I have in mind so far is to lower the mufflers a bit. They sit way too close to the body frame and bumper. No wonder why it's been melting pretty good..

Edit: forgot to mention that I did pass inspection last year :). I added some thin sheet metal between the exhaust tips and the body frame. Quite ugly though :(.

These were made specifically for the LGT since the OBXT has the turn-down, un-tipped stock placement. Never understood why Subaru didn't add a through-bumper cut-out for the OBXT like they did for the LGT.

IP&T and several others offer extended exhaust hangers. BarManBean has cut-out the bumper on his OBXT so you might want to reach out to him and see what he has done and uses for his. IIRC, I use the Turn-in Concept (TIC) standard PU hangers, that I bought from IP&T. Hangs tight, and doesn't move at all.

Well, at least the EDM and JDM Outbacks did get through-bumper cut-outs. A fellow forum member from France gave me the following info:

P/N according to opposedforces.com : 57704ag060

224 usd on partsouq.com :)

That is how his bumper looks like:

So tempted to just buy one..

I'll show you soon a profile picture of the rear of my car. You'll see how the tips point up. I believe I really need longer hangers. I'll check with what BMB did as well.
