Best tuner?

Recommended Posts

O, virtual dyno. Sounds like an app I got for $5.99

It's actually free, but I've donated much more then that because of how useful (and how much money it's saved me).

Do some searches, it's well withing a chassis dyno error of margin (all dyno's will read slightly different), Virtual Dyno numbers (when done right) are within 5% of real numbers.

^Not good advice as far as return on investment for a straightforward stage 2 tune with an intercooler.

IME, I've gotten way more out of my e-tuning experiences with Dave (Cryo) than I would've gotten with an in-person dyno tune. At one point I ended up chasing a finicky vacuum leak that turned out to be the airbox. Going to the local dyno tuner to have the car actually smoke tested yielded no definitive results, and if I was there for a dyno tune with the issue I either would've ended up with a cruddy tune or just getting tossed off the dyno at my expense.

I got way more time and trouble shooting effort out of Dave than what I would expect to receive from most dynotuning "locals" in my area.

I'm not agreeing completely with that, I still believe an in person tune is best. You nay have been dealing with a bad tuner.......I have a suspicion who you where dealing with.

Well, I wasn't dealing with the tuner in a tuning capacity, just to be clear--he was only doing the boost leak test. The shop was close to where you live and seems to predominately work on Evos ;)

Unfortunately it just seems that all of the local tuners here get mixed reviews. Hard to pick out a tuner out of a big bag of mixed reviews when so far my etunes have been just fine and are also 25% of the cost. Not perfect for all scenarios (i.e. big builds), but for everyday stuff like stage 2 tunes (WITH a wideband setup for logging) I think they're fine.

Obviously YMMV with whatever you chose.

I'm Airboy Tuned on Stg.2. He also redid the factory tune, super happy with his work.

Most Subaru tunes in Alberta, Canada are done by Airboy, either by dyno or road tune.. you won't find anyone unhappy with his work around these parts.

I will say I am impressed with the VD results you have. Positive results for VD.

On the other hand, it seems to be software made to match a Dyno Jet but only when it is in a certain mode. It does get AVERAGE hp and torque pretty darn close. But I'd like to see a spike from detonation show up on the graph in a usable manner before I would consider it a tool and not a toy.

It really surprised me too, I didn't want to believe it until a well known tuner told me that it's fairly reliable.

Not sure about spotting detonation like that, perhaps it would show up as power plateauing, but I honestly wouldn't tune the car to those limits on the street, save that for the dyno.

As for getting a good base tune going, or comparing power gains with new mods, it seems to be good for that. Like I used it to spot power increase going to a catless up pipe etc.
