After June i get a nice bonus because of the three year project we are finishing. I am taking part of it and fixing some issues i have with the outback.

I already upgraded to Legacy GT brakes with dba rotors and stoptech pads they still suck so. Mind you, you can get these cheaper on summit or jegs. Plus it's cheaper than buying brembos adapters and two piece rotors.

Coil overs so i can run big tires and have the heights set to my liking. Already have 04 struts its still to wobbly. these will be outback specific height with 8K front and 6k Rear plus they use a radial bearing meaning they won't bind. I will make coilover covers for them for the winter.

I would take some of the brake budget and put it towards different CO's. Also, I'm not a big fan of running a higher rate up front, that's sort of personal preference though (unless doing lots of autoX, even then I think equal f/r is better).

I was quoted $3800 for outback specific coilovers. mind u these are double adjustable and have different rebound and compression adjusters. they make a lower end for the legacy and seem to popular for wrx's and sti's and porsche. I was curious about the spring setup

I was running 6k front 8k rear for awhile and that was fine. Myles at RCE convinced me to go with a balanced rate setup f/r, took me a bit to get used to it, and I switched to an equal f/r sway bar diameter and really like it now.

 

The rear suspension design has a mechanical advantage on the coil/shock, so your coil rate is much higher than the actual wheel rate. The front mcpherson setup ends up producing a wheel rate that's much closer to the spring rate. I can't think of any scenario where you'd want a significantly higher front rate on this chassis.

I have a 25mm perrin fsb and a 21mm cusco rear. I tried asking RCE if they could make a set of tarmac 1's for the outback height they suggested the legacy version. :(

scoobyscoodle Any thoughts on a coilover company that will make custom coilovers that aren't junk and don't cost 10k. I don't race enough to justify the Full custom set.

My options so far are

RCE/KW with 2" spacers $2.5k

Fortune Auto custom outback height $4K

Ohilins but that kind of sad to spend that much on amazing suspension to add spacers

BC 1.2K

Cusco are not rebuild able so they are out. Would love the controller though

Honestly, if you want to keep the stock OB ride height, this is probably your best bet. I ended up converting my OB suspension to the LGT setup so that I could run any of the legacy stuff I wanted, but if you're trying to keep it an outback your options are pretty limited.

 

I love the RCE/KWs but don't really think it would be ideal, or safe, to run them with such a large spacer (I wouldn't go over 1", and even that is a big spacer). Same goes for Ohlins, but even more $$ wasted.

 

$4K is way more money than I'd spend on something for fortune auto, double-adjust or not.

 

If you could make something work with Koni inserts and a GC sleeve I think that would be a pretty nice setup, but it definitely won't be bolt on out of the box.

not sure why u would want coilovers and stock outback height.. would imagine u would want low center of gravity. i could see if u were trying to be able to drop it down while racing then raise it back up but ive got the ohlins dfv's and at there highest setting are not really even close to stock lgt height.

Not complete stock outback height 1-1.5 inches lower with adjust ability. Legacy gt's can not stuff a 255/50R17 let alone a 255/45R17. which allows a lot of grip and still maintain a cushion.

I do love your setup but i want to use 265/40R18's or 255/40R18s and still have that area around the wheel well for suspension travel. It's not about how low it's about useability and function.

Helps I'm crazy.

I bet you could do normal coilovers, have a lower (functionally lower) car, and pay for custom body work to add flares and come out on top and also come out with a car that handles better.

Don't underestimate what you can do with a fender roller, the oem obxt flares, and some time. I was running 255/40/R18's on mine, definitely lower than oem LGT height, and had plenty of room. I could have easily fit 265's, maybe even 275's with some trimming.

Lol Mybe i just need to find a friend with some RCE/KW coilovers and test how i want the car to sit.

 

def not a bad idea. could always put like a 1/2" or so spacer in if need be.

 

I installed my RCE Tarmac 1s with 3/8" spacers front and rear because I knew for sure that I don't ever want to be terribly low. I'm at 14.25" measures from hub to fender in the front, and 14.5" in the rear. I'm sure that the T1s wouldn't complain if I went up a good bit farther, but I figure they're in a pretty happy place right now. I think 1/2" to 3/4" spacers with regular LGT coils would definitely give you a good bit of practical height adjustment for tires.

Are RCE's or KW's adjustable height separate from the spring load?

1/2" front and 3/4" rear spacers.

New Rear endlinks

spec b bump stop

Whiteline camber bushing

Whiteline trailing arms

Change the spacers to 3/8" and that will most likely be my exact setup for summer as well--minus the specb bump stops and I'll add in LGT rear upper control arms. :)

 

RCEs adjust height / spring preload together. Dampening (or rebound?) adjustment is separate.

If you are referring to coil bind like I think you are, I don't think it applies--I don't drive fast enough and an outback isn't exactly full of aero-prowess, so downforce isn't making or breaking the handling of the car.

 

Or do you mean something different? :confused:

 

The spring rates are even, 400/400, if that's what you're wondering. RCE (and I'd assume KW) offer different spring rates and swift springs if you want though.
