1. Going with the clutch masters fx300.

I cant find anywhere what cross member everyone is using for this.

Does the 5 speed cross member work OK with the 6 speed mount?

This seems to suggest its the same whether 5 speed legacy or 6 speed spec b other than obviously the rubber mount

  2. I am using an ACT Extreme PP with the street disk and it hold up fine for me. I made a few passes at 30+ psi without any slippage. My R180 broke before the clutch slipped:(

Any deceleration noise with this one.

In my research I think it is the springs in the disc rattling on the aftermarket clutches when the gearbox lash hits a sort of resonant frequency. Usually this is damped by the dual mass flywheel or the fact that the stock clutch disc does not have this issue.

I will be running 350/373 to the wheels but if I turn boost up I may be at about 400/430 to the wheels.

So Im looking for a clutch that is fairly quiet that can handle that power or just go with the stock one.

  3. OK guys what clutch are you running with the 6 speed swap?

Also if you have the ACT with street disc do you have deceleration noise like everyone is getting with the ACT / 06 WRX flywheel in the 5 speed?

Getting ready to do this soon I hope if the deal goes through....

  4. Thanks Subie.... I didn't think that captainmorgan was correct and by the way just about to pull the trigger on the 6 speed swap. I have the motor as you know but may delay putting it in and use the money for the tranny swap.
  5. So lets say I were to go the route of an 05 STi 6spd for my 05 Outback XT.

The outbacks have an R180 rear diff with a 4.444 final drive gear ratio.

Would this be compatible? There is an 05 STi at a salvage yard not too far from me that is nearly complete available for partout.

I know the outback has 4.44 gears, but is it an R180????

Where did this info come from and is there a way to tell by looking at it? I would assume it would be easy to verify.

  6. I want to do this on my '05 Outback XT 5MT (I started by reading all 300+ posts here). I found someone locally selling a drivetrain from an '05 STI. I will be getting a mechanic to do the swap for me.

From the '05 STI I'll be getting: transmission, rear diff, clutch, flywheel, slave cylinder, clutch fork, shifter and shifter linkage. I'll get a driveshaft from a 4EAT wagon. I'll get the aftermarket DCCDPro controller. I'll buy new seals (the 5 listed) and a new shift knob. There is a question as to whether I can use my stock rear axle. Am I missing anything?

Has anyone done this on an Outback yet? What do I need to check on the rear axle to know if it will work?

I am doing the same thing to an outback XT. Been researching but no parts yet.

Anyway I'm pretty positive you will need Spec B axels.

Spec B axels fit the R180 rear diff but also fit the legacy rear hubs.

Front axels slide right into the STI tranny.

  7. "You can reuse your 5 speed clutch with 5 speed flywheel. You must use the 6 speed clutch fork."

This is good to know as my 5 speed already has a WRX flywheel and ACT clutch and pressure plate.

From what I read the 5 speed clutch and flywheel is only slightly smaller...

    Nasioc Thread:

Will my WRX clutch and flywheel work in a 6speed?

-Yes. The diameter of the WRX flywheel is smaller (230mm compared to 240mm) than the STi flywheel. The bell housing on the 5speed is also smaller. There is less surface area with the 5speed compared to the 6speed but is not a huge difference. There are no issues with running a 5MT clutch and flywheel in a 6MT."

  8. Thanks, think Ill get the 3.90 R180 and Spec b axels and then start collecting the driveshaft and tranny.

Should I shoot for the 05 or 06 STI tranny?

Whats a good price for a 30-60,000 mile used STI tranny? I see a few 05's on Ebay I may go after.

  9. I might add I have seen this statement a number of times and wonder if the 06 Tranny can be used with a different rear end ratio than the transmission.

This was from an ad for a 2006 STI transmission/rearend swap for sale:

    FRONT REDUCTION GEAR: 3.900

    TRANSFER REDUCTION: 1.1

    REAR REDUCTION GEAR: 3.545

This transmission has a 1.1:1 transfer reduction, which is the same as most of the previous WRX models, making this transmission easier than most others to retro-fit into a WRX. You will need other parts to get this swap to work, but this year of transmission is without a doubt the easiest because it requires changing out the minimum # of parts to get it to work correctly.

  10. Guys I have read through this thread and am looking for some input. KCWagon has discussed this with me a bit but want to nail down exactly what I am going to need to do.

I have a heavily modded 2005 Outback XT and my goal has always been to turn it into an STI Outback.

I always liked the PIA 2009 Forester STI swap and wanted to do a similar thing to my Outback.

My car is paid off, it has 153,000 miles on it, and in the next year or so it will be getting a motor and a tranny. I plan on doing a leak down/compression test on the motor and if everything is still looking good, I plan to do the tranny first.

I currently have the 5 speed with a WRX flywheel and ACT street disc Clutch and pressure plate.

I just cant stand the transmission noise everyone is getting with the ACT/WRX combo, and for all I know it is having some gear lash issues making it worse, Im just not sure.

With all that said I want to put in a 2006 STI 6 Speed with the DCCD and yaw sensors etc.

It currently has 2006 rear LGT brakes and the Wilwood kit up front.

The Outback XT has a 4.44 final drive ratio so that will have to be changed.

What I intend to do is make a list of everything I will need to do the swap and start purchasing to get everything together.

Im not sure if the brakes will work with the STI axels and rear diffs etc so what I need is a comprehensive list.....

For those that have done this before, if you could help me out to make this list of parts I will need that would be great.

    Here is a beginning....

    2006 STI Tranny

    DCCD Controller and wiring

    Yaw sensors and wiring

    2006 STI Shifter

Front Axels and hubs (will wilwoods brakes work with these)

    Driveshaft???

Rear Axels and hubs (will lgt rear brakes work with these)

    Rear R180 rearend.

Currently running 06 WRX wheels but I don't think they will fit the 5x114 06 hubs.

I could at least at the beginning get another R160 with correct ratio and run that and change to the 180 at a later date??????

I could also possibly run my existing front axels and hubs in the STI tranny?????

Any help from the experts would be appreciated.

  11. Just stumbled on this right up. I wish I thought of this before I bought my Magen Racing set up. I will eventually go with a LGT wagon suspension.

I too had the megans but just switched to the BC/BR coilovers and they are NIGHT and DAY different.

On stiff they are stiff, race car stiff.

But on about 10-12 from Full soft they are really nice and could be softer if put on full soft.

I am really pleased with these and they are MUCH MUCH better than the megans.

You can order them outback specific from Josh Nahum at Import Image. Basically they are the same exact ones for the LGT but with longer cartridges.

  12. Hey I would like to do the opposite with my 05 GT I would like to swap out the GT susp and put the outback struts in. Has anyone done this or know anyone who has? Is it possible? Looking for some clues? Would greatly appreciate it. Thanks

I wouldnt recommend it, the outback suspension is way under damped, and it floats all over the road even when new. Maybe if you could find aftermarket shocks and struts it would be good but not stock.

If it is height you want get the BC/BR coilovers made for outback (only difference is the have longer shock cartridges) and you can go stock lgt height or outback height whenever you want.

  13. Yes and yes.

Your i85 harness likely already has 2 pins/wires for a subwoofer that you can recycle (the wires dead-end in your car).

If you're certain that you'll never install audio steering wheel controls, then the SWC wires are two more you can recycle.

The downside is that you'll need to extract 3 of those wires and relocate them into different slots in the i85 plug. Some people find it difficult to extract the pins.

I can make a harness or adapter -- anything from a few extra pins/wires all the way up to a plug-and-play adapter that you can insert between your car's i85 harness and the 2007/8/9 radio. Recently, I made one like this...

I don't know of any other kits with a panel mount 3.5mm jack (besides that IS335 kit, which I have available).

You don't need to use the kit's RCA Y adapter cable. That's for HUs whose rear aux input is via RCA jacks. You can cannibalize it for its 3.5mm jack, or toss it.

SVX havent been in this thread for a while but LOVE the adapter your creating.

Where on earth did you find the pins and the connectors?

I am an x-ray installer/service guy so I do this sort of stuff a lot, its nice to see you found the parts to do it right.

    Great work!
