  1. Update: Restored voltage stabilizer and A/C systems to their former eptitude. Removed transmission pan to bang out a giant dent, then P-Greyed the edges, put it back on, and filled it back up. Also, the 22D seems to tolerate 87-89 octane well enough, and it helps with low-end torque, but the ECU likes it better when 91-93 are used...and it is programmed to run primarily on 87, which means it is adapting to the hybrid well.
  2. The water pump/t-stat housing is an '06+ EJ25 N/A unit. I also want to note that I had to remove the lightweight flexplate from the EJ222 bottom end, as it is smaller in diameter than the flexplate from the EJ25D, and so after they were swapped, the EJ22D was then dropped in. Put 200mi on the engine already. Seems to respond pretty well, and response is almost SOHC-like.
  3. Also to note: The sensor that plugs into the EJ257 coolant crosspipe is 3 pronged, while the sensor for the EJ25D crosspipe is 2 pronged plus another sensor. To use the EJ257 sensor on older Phase 1 cars, you need longer wiring to reach the connector to the front of the pipe where the sensor is located (the Phase 1 sensors are located in the rear of the pipe). 2/3 wires are colored EXACTLY THE SAME. This makes it easy for wiring/splicing to be done or the project to be a success. I would get a foot of wiring and a connector from any 99+ Impreza, Forester, or Legacy and MAKE SURE it is a 3 prong.
  4. Discovered upon installing EJ25D big plenum intake manifold onto EJ22D. There is a sharp corner at the end of the left front runner that will not clear the 257 coolant crosspipe. http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w40/Kenshin1984/1996%20Subaru%20Legacy%20LSi/20170401_200029_zpsl48tima8.jpg Moments of dremeling the sharp corner... http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w40/Kenshin1984/1996%20Subaru%20Legacy%20LSi/20170401_204158_zps4oxfpqmx.jpg Problem solved. http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w40/Kenshin1984/1996%20Subaru%20Legacy%20LSi/20170401_200909_zpsrafesyvs.jpg The EJ22D is being finished at this point. Now, I am cutting the EGR pipe in half for lengthening and checking odds and ends out. http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w40/Kenshin1984/1996%20Subaru%20Legacy%20LSi/20170402_153151_zps56ryl2je.jpg http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w40/Kenshin1984/1996%20Subaru%20Legacy%20LSi/20170402_153220_zpsese8rnda.jpg EGR pipe halves joined securely. http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w40/Kenshin1984/1996%20Subaru%20Legacy%20LSi/20170402_154436_zpsvoubhpj6.jpg Prepping for installation. http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w40/Kenshin1984/1996%20Subaru%20Legacy%20LSi/20170402_193708_zps6rsnon4c.jpg Ran into another block. The bracket from the power steering pump also doesn't clear the EJ257 coolant crossmember. Luckily, the power steering bracket is constructed in 2pc mode. Unbolt the rear 12mm bolts and it will fit just fine. Engine is installed and running at this point. It pulls hard at 3500rpm+, and the 10.6:1 makes it have enough torque to move along in the city just fine for what it is. No stock EJ22E is this powerful and neither is any stock EJ221/2/3, so I am pleased. However, the cams top out at 7500rpm and the ECU has a 6500rpm cap and is learning the engine that it is dealing with. MPG is 34+ on the highway, which I am also pleased with. I haven't gone beyond 4k rpm yet to break in the new components, but from what I can tell, the hybrid has a fair bit of punch over any regular N/A SOHC EJ22. http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w40/Kenshin1984/1996%20Subaru%20Legacy%20LSi/SAM_0899_zpsonksgk8l.jpg Obligatory Car Wash pics. http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w40/Kenshin1984/1996%20Subaru%20Legacy%20LSi/SAM_0898_zpsqeourydl.jpg http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w40/Kenshin1984/1996%20Subaru%20Legacy%20LSi/SAM_0897_zpsohcunou9.jpg http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w40/Kenshin1984/1996%20Subaru%20Legacy%20LSi/SAM_0896_zpsptop0z2c.jpg http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w40/Kenshin1984/1996%20Subaru%20Legacy%20LSi/SAM_0895_zpsnuxmsjfq.jpg http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w40/Kenshin1984/1996%20Subaru%20Legacy%20LSi/SAM_0900_zpsh5p11olv.jpg http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w40/Kenshin1984/1996%20Subaru%20Legacy%20LSi/SAM_0901_zpssexdsbwx.jpg http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w40/Kenshin1984/1996%20Subaru%20Legacy%20LSi/SAM_0902_zpsbtp1kwkl.jpg Parking Lot shots. http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w40/Kenshin1984/1996%20Subaru%20Legacy%20LSi/20170407_184712_zpsqp2h916a.jpg http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w40/Kenshin1984/1996%20Subaru%20Legacy%20LSi/20170407_184724_zps18lyox1p.jpg http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w40/Kenshin1984/1996%20Subaru%20Legacy%20LSi/20170407_184734_zpsryuq8lpu.jpg http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w40/Kenshin1984/1996%20Subaru%20Legacy%20LSi/20170407_184751_zpszbm3o3h9.jpg http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w40/Kenshin1984/1996%20Subaru%20Legacy%20LSi/20170407_184802_zps9rw9ivyg.jpg

  8. Tip: Do not go to mirror finish on the heads. With the MLS head gaskets you will be using, the head needs a light measure of roughness so that they can bite into the gasket. Super smooth finishes will cause excess scrubbing action between the heads and gaskets, and the gaskets will risk blowing.
  9. Stick with the EJ20K heads in full. Intake ports are massive compared to the EJ25D heads. EJ20D cams have huge intake lobes compared to the EJ25D lobes. They're basically N/A EJ20K/G heads but without the turbo grind the 20K exhaust cams have, and the sodium-filled exhaust valves (STi version). They have nearly the same exhaust cams as the EJ25D. I am expecting the EJ20D cams to top out around 7200-7500. 20K cams will go up to 7500-7800.
  10. Yesterday, I went searching for a few parts. I wasn't disappointed. 11. The heads are coming from an EJ20D, which has the same size chambers as the EJ25D ('97-'99) @ 46.6cc. The block I am using has -3cc pistons and comes up almost .4mm under the deck. This allows me to use the thinnest head gaskets available for the EJ22 (0.8mm) to achieve a compression ratio of 10.6:1 when everything is said and done.

  13. I remember seeing you. Good to see a familiar around! Yes, the white GT Limited was indeed the Legacy that received the 22D. That engine taught me much and sent me on a ride for more knowledge on EJ22's and EJ22 hybrids.

  16. These are indeed 22T pistons. You can also have 0.3mm taken off the top of each piston so that they are completely flush with the block instead of over, and it'll raise your compression ratio as well. Just something to consider. Also, if you're worried about the loss of ringland thickness, don't be. They will still be plenty fat.
  17. And to prep for the future, I have picked this up to continue an old endeavor. Pics of future project for LSi: http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w40/Kenshin1984/1996%20Subaru%20Legacy%20LSi/20170204_140949_zpsqsuknhzu.jpg http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w40/Kenshin1984/1996%20Subaru%20Legacy%20LSi/20170204_140954_zps4ixqhbef.jpg http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w40/Kenshin1984/1996%20Subaru%20Legacy%20LSi/20170204_204654_zpsl3qbeovl.jpg http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w40/Kenshin1984/1996%20Subaru%20Legacy%20LSi/20170204_204713_zpsdoiubjfq.jpg
  18. Okay. Since I positively need my car for work, I have done some unholy things to the EJ25D to get it running and keep it running for as long as I possibly can. I also noticed a block heating unit in the reman block, and I was told that it was an option on all 2G's. I am interested because I have never seen than on anything other than GT's and Outbacks before. 19. I don't know how the prices are now, but I think I paid something like $32 for mine.
  20. I would agree if the numbers weren't presented. A couple of ft-lbs or bhp at peak gained from an array of capacitors as small as what the Raizen employs in it's unit is a pretty big deal. The car is electronic, ECU & TCU included. Not only did I notice better stereo sound quality, but also diminished startup time and much smoother idling. No noticeable difference in the transmission shifting, but that is an entirely big unit. I was also able to crack the 30mpg hwy barrier where I could not before, with blown head gaskets.
  21. Update: EJ25D is on it's final leg and can no longer operate as it should. The EJ22D I plan on putting in will be unlike any I or anyone has put together before.

  23. So, the LED's came in (red lumen discharge) and I ended up displeased with them overall. Yes, it's disgusting. Haha.: http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w40/Kenshin1984/1996%20Subaru%20Legacy%20LSi/SAM_0882_zpsuxdmzms6.jpg During my time at the gas station, the car suffered an electrical failure and the battery died. I ended up getting a jump by a stranger, and then by Muse himself, who I didn't recognize at first because it was dark, but then he walked closer and then I was like, "Hey!" We spent time speaking about each other's Legacies for a bit, after which he gave me Grimmrican's old UEL header (Thanks, Muse!), then we started deducing the issue to what could be draining the battery faster than the alternator can charge it. We found it to be the aftermarket triple power port I had powering my phone, external cabin heater, and the AM/FM transmitter. He then gave me a jump and we bid each other farewell.
