Okay, since this thread is the most descriptive for a comeback, I will work with it. It has been a long time since I commented on this thread and the last time I did was shortly before the car's dyno run with the EJ22D, so let's pick up from there and work our way up to the present. My exhaust setup: UEL's w/2.5in catback to unknown muffler. My buddy's 22D-T powered Legacy wagon.

Update: Any 1997-1999 EJ25D head/E2221/2/3 block hybrid MUST be run on 89 octane unless using an EJ22T head gasket, in which case, running 87 is perfectly fine. Any 1997-1999 EJ25D head/EJ221/2/3 block must be run on 89+ unless using stock Ej25D head gasket, in which case, running 87 is perfectly fine.

Yes. The unofficial name for the SUS is "Outback SUS" but Subaru didn't want to step on their own money tree at the time (The Outback was an award winning piece that singlehandedly saved the company in the 90's), so the Outback SUS sedan left the factory as just the SUS. All SUS are pretty much Outback sedans.

So, the engine runs well and can take anything thrown at it nearly 2k miles later. I am more than pleased with the results. It produces good torque for city driving and good midrange for passing. The Power Mode mod has been done, which utilizes the power that the engine produces at full song well for what it is. I would recommend this construction for anything seeking efficiency and power over a stock EJ22E any day.

It's a lot grippier for sure, but to maximize the width, I would need an STi steering rack or a Legacy SS rack.

The rears rub a bit, but 3mm spacers are on their way to fix that.

Update: Engine has 1000mi on it and semi-synthetic 10w40 is now being used. Runs like a top and 3500rpm to redline is a fun thing to do, but only has been done twice. I have babied her ever since and have stuck top mostly taking pictures and changing radios...again. 90-96 EJ22E = Non interference. 97-98 EJ22E = Interference. 99-01 EJ221/2/3 = Interference. Even with interference, the EJ22E is a fair distance away from comparing to an EJ22D w/the same or greater compression, especially one that uses a far superior bottom end.

Approaching 154k miles.

The 222 has high compression pistons (-3cc) and the thrust bearing moved to the 5th position as opposed to the 22E's, which have -14.5cc (1990-1996) & -12.5cc pistons (1997-1998). If you want to do a nice hybrid that will be extra reliable, I have a good suggestion. 1997-1998 EJ25D heads. EJ253 block. EJ257 head gasket. 205 oil pump. This hybrid is popular and pretty much the go-to for people restoring 2.5 engines to their 2nd Gens, but want the combo of added power and reliability. The 205 oil pumps are the most capable oil pumps you have in your possession, and so I added that into the mix.

Greater coolant capacity and it is more straight than the older Phase 1 types. Some work is needed to make it work, but nothing anyone with extra wiring, wiring skills, and a grinder cannot handle.

I may not have been clear with the EJ22D built, so here goes. EJ20D cams, valves, valve springs and retainers, heads w/EJ20D head bolts (reused). EJ25D big plenum head gasket. EJ25D ECU (stock '97 Legacy Outback 7X ECU). EJ222 block w/EJ222 head gaskets & oil baffle. EJ205 oil pump (detailed). EJ257 coolant crosspipe w/sensor, oil pan, and timing assembly. EJ257 timing belt (Gates blue). EJ257 Moroso oil pickup.
