  1. It's actually a really great solution for those not wanting to do anything too permanent to their car.
  2. I use an app called AutomateIt to automate a lot of functions. For example, when the power is cut and the tablet goes on battery, I have it set so that it goes into airplane mode, turns off the screen, and closes open apps. This way, I'm able to have the tablet stay on battery power for several weeks before it runs out of juice. Tasker is another app that will do similar things.
  3. I bought the iClever Himbox HB01 Bluetooth 4.0 Hands-Free Car Kit. It's available on Amazon.ca. works great and also integrates music controls. I have two phones and it pairs both at the same time.
  4. Haha no just too lazy to remove the tablet from my car.
  5. It does not. At this point, that is the one thing that AutomateIT is failing on. Tasker appears to have a rule that allows you to automatically switch wifi networks (I have two wifi networks in my car, one for the backup camera, the other for the internet from my phone). I looked into options that would allow me to connect an IP camera to my internet hotpsot, but couldn't find a camera that would actually fit as a backup camera. There is a method of using an OTG cable, and some sort of AV module to plug in the camera, but with my Nexus 7, I would have to root it for that to work. I would say that is the best solution, but I am not too keep on rooting my tablet.
  6. I looked at those dashcams, and those are definitely the best of the best. However, I didn't like the pricetag so I went with a cheaper option that still has amazing 1080p video, but less features. Unfortunately, my LGT does not have steering wheel controls, only buttons on my steering wheel are for the 5EAT shifting.
  7. I've had my Nexus 7 in the car for about 2 years now. Here are some things to note: Backup Camera Finally got a working solution. Got a Wifi backup camera off of Amazon (available on eBay too). It creates it's own Wifi hotspot, which you connect to on the Nexus 7 and then using an app from the Google Play store you can view the video feed over the wifi connection. AutomateIt Integration Both my phone (Note 3) and Nexus 7 have AutomateIt installed. It works the same as Tasker, I just find the interface easier to use. With AutomateIt, I have the rules set around the power status of the Nexus 7. When the Nexus 7 receives power (ie: car turns on): - Turn on the tablet screen - Turn on wifi and bluetooth - Start Car Home Ultra (my car dock app) When my car starts up, I also have a bluetooth device in the car that will power up only when the car is on. Doing this, allows my phone to pair with the bluetooth for handsfree calling, but also, using AutomateIt, when it pairs with the bluetooth my WifiHotspot from my phone turns on, connecting my Nexus 7 to an internet connection. When the car turns off, AutomateIt: - Automatically closes Car Home Ultra, and Waze (if it was open) - Automatically turns off my phone's WifiHotspot - Automatically turns off wifi, bluetooth, and my Nexus 7's screen - If music was playing, it stops that as well. With everything working like this, I don't ever have to touch any buttons, turn anything on, or fiddle with any settings when turning on and off the car. When the car is off, the Nexus 7 is on battery power, and lasts well over 2 weeks because it is not running any apps, the screen is off, and all connections are turned off. Even when it does dip a little low on battery power, it typically charges at about 1% a minute so just a short drive can often get it topped up.
  8. I'd love to see how you got your factor camera to work with it. Was it simply cutting the connector off and adding an RCA jack to it?
  9. Looks promising. I've already got a backup camera mounted and installed in my trunk lid. Is there anyway to take that input (yellow RCA video) and connect it to the wifi box?
  10. That's exactly what I'm looking for but I cannot find out where to buy it from.
  11. Having a problem finding the UVC cable that was used here. Can't confirm any of them work with Android.
  12. Ok, I'm doing that backup camera install on my Nexus 7. Other than making my Nexus 7 a bluetooth speaker for my phone, the backup camera was the only major feature missing.
  13. Yea, it's going to impede the view for sure. My proclip basically blocks half of the nexus screen to the passenger. There is a little bit of room to move it further to the right, but then that would impede the vent's airflow. I guess it's a toss up between the view or the airflow.
  14. Just do a google search, and you'll see what car chargers are compatible with the Nexus. It's a very well known and documented problem that originates from the way the tablet does things instead of the actual charger.
  15. I have AutomateIt Pro as well. Do you have it with ICS? My understanding is that with ICS, it doesn't work anymore. I could test it again, but it's never worked for me.
  16. I've been using AutomateIt. But I did test settings profiles, and I believe it was working correctly. They can be finicky, and do take some trial and error to get things right. With AutomateIt, the only thing it cannot do is kill and app and pause music.
  17. No, you're right about that. I had to use a stand-alone BT headset. Same with a backup camera, there's no way to do it that I know.
  18. Yea, I use mine as a music player as well. Sync's with my music and I play that all the time. I could use the many radio apps, but I prefer my own music. The only thing I use the stock HU for is the HVAC controls. Everything else is better on the tablet.
  19. It's still possible, but just makes it a bit more difficult to do. I drilled a hole into the vent to accommodate the power and audio cable. One unintentional side effect was that it also helped secure the tablet in place.
  20. Maybe the non-nav bezel is different? My vents do separate from the bezel as well, but they also separate in half. So the vents are actually 2 pieces per side. I only had one piece of the vent on each side when I took that photo. When I installed it in my car, all the pieces were put back on and fit snug.
  21. I thought the ability to shut down an app in Jelly bean was not possible anymore? I have both Tasker and AutomateIt, and while both claim to be able to shut down an app, neither actually do when I send the command. I want to shut down the "Car Home Ultra" app that I use as my car dashboard/portal. I will definitely look up "Settings Profiles" as it sounds very similar to the other two apps I use (triggers and actions) but seems to work better from your accounts.
  22. The camera is half blocked, so only shows up half of the screen. But I have never tried the built in mic, so no clue. If it is front facing, it should be fine.
  23. Not a problem, when I start up google maps it's got my exact location within 1-2 seconds and 5 seconds at most.
  24. I have not tried to disable the connections individually. That is a really good idea. Since the update, though, I've been keeping an eye on it and it looks like the tablet is going to sleep properly now (even with wifi on) and so when I am starting up my car it is still at 100% or 99%. Which app are you using? I use AutomateIt Pro, but also have Tasker. Tasker didn't quite work with the trigger for power disconnect, but I liked it because it allowed me to automatically toggle the play/pause button when starting and turning off my car.
