  1. The price difference between the models is less than the cost of swapping in a turbo engine, plus the GT had some upgrades that were not available on the 2.5i, seats, brakes etc. If you want a good project, find a GT with a blown turbo or motor. Put in a new Subaru short block and rebuild the turbo. If done right, you will have a good reliable 4th Gen GT.
  2. OK, thanks, that will cut the cost down a bit, especially since the skid plate is already acting as a lower heat shield. Since you have one apart, would you be able to show me a picture of the turbo support? I can see that something is connected to the front engine mount area to support the turbo, but its so rusty I really cannot make it out.

I might as well replace this support once I pull the turbo for the upgrade later in the year.

I am on vacation this week in Houston, but I would be more than happy to take some picture when I get back.

  3. Looking at the parts schematic, it looks like the lower one is required in order for the top and middle heat shields to be assemble into a mechanically sound unit. I'll have to think about this, its alot of money and they are going to rust out again even with my skid plate, based on experience with my previous Outback in Canada.

The bottom bolts to the middle and top. It isn’t needed (no threads going into it). I have a 2010 GT engine apart, I looked at last week for another member asking a similar question.

Even though they rust out, they should last for another good 7-8 years.

  4. The in cabin filter was pretty dirty and I replaced it with the one I was going to use for my Legacy. I went through the paperwork in the glove box while doing that and found the window sticker. I am still waiting for the machine to finish my heads. My 2009 Outback needs new tires and a suspension rebuild for September inspection, so that will take priority for a little bit.

  5. 2 weekends ago I had also gotten a carpet out of 2010 Legacy GT being parted out. I vacuumed and washed with carpet cleaner the old carpet. It most had dirt and some animal, hair and few drink spills. It came out looking nearly new with the only dirt spots on the drivers side where the floor mats doesn't cover. Overall it look very good. I threw in some 2011-2012 Legacy GT floor mats. The prior owner had paint in the passenger side seat. He slams the brakes on and spilled white paint every where on the passenger front (glove box, carpet, kick panels, door panel, a little on the seats. It wasn't too bad to pick the paint off plastic or seats. It was impossible get out the carpet or where it spill on the metal. The prior owner threw away the carpet and had apparently drove the car that way for quite a while with just floor mats. I washed the whole floor pan to get all the salt on off everything. I didn't want to seal in all the crap between the carpet and floor. Between the paint and cleaning it up, it probably took me a good 6 hours. I found that I am missing the rear inboard seat bolt covers, I will grab those when I take a trip to get the mirror assembly.

  6. I honestly like it how it is, I don’t think I’m going to change how fast it is, or how much power it makes, but I’m thinking on ricing it out, mostly cosmetics, but not many people do a lot of this to a legacy, atleast I haven’t seen much, so I’m trying to find trustworthy compnies

If you're on Facebook, join the Fifth Gen Legacy group. They will help you to 'rice it out'

  7. I had order to the middle shield because the 4 mounting bolts had all broken off for lower and top shield. Looking at my top shield, I see that I am missing one of the 2 mounting bolts for the lower shield, so I really need to order one of those too. The lower shield is not needed to secure either the top of middle shields.
  8. I saw on FB Marketplace a 2011 Legacy GT that someone in NY was parting out. I messaged him, He had the carpet, wheels, side mirror, and radio connector I needed. He thought he might have the under tray. I message with him on Friday asking you the condition of the wheel. I specifically asked him about the tread depth and he said it was good. So I made plans to pick up the parts yesterday. I got an odd message about need to bring bricks to put the car up on. I put together some junk concrete slabs and old wood. Based on that, I decided to bring 10, 12, 13 and 14mm socket, cutter, pair screw drivers just in case.

I hit 2.5 hours of traffic, so it made for really long drive (just over 6 hours of driving) I get to the address and there is no entrance. I message the guy, he said he hasn't been to the shop in a while. So he gives me a different address, fortunately was only 5 minutes away, but that should have been a key of what I was getting into. I get to the shop that has about 10 junkyards car in the back. The 2011 Legacy GT was actually a 2010 LGT Premium. The tires are at the wear bars and wiped in the inside, so I wasn't going to buy them. The Wheels and tires was the key reason for me to take a trip Long island, NY. He offered to take off a few hundred, but I didn't need another set of GT wheels. The Legacy GT didn't have any mirrors. He did have a 2011 2.5i Legacy but it was also missing a mirror, the interior was pretty far apart and full of parts, I shift through the junk I thought I found the mirror only to release it is a passenger mirror. They did have 2010 Outback in the back lot, but he said that wasn't his car and they were going to fix it. At least the guy didn't seem shady. No under tray that I can find either. I had no idea I was going to have to pull the parts myself. Thank god, I brought my own tools. The driverside 2 doors were up against a trailer, so I could only open them up enough to crack them open. The passenger doors were up against the Outback and gave me a just enough room to squeeze inside the car. No big pieces could be taken out of the car. I had to dissemble the interior from inside which meant moving the seat, console around etc to lift up the carpet. It also isn't easy to disconnect a seat connector when you are sitting on it or reaching across the console. I did notice when moved around the shifter to remove the console that it had short throw shifter. I spent 2 hour there and was sweaty and tired at that point, so I decided I didn't want to jack the car up, support it and try grabbing the shifter assembly. My phone was nearly dead getting there. (My 2009 Outback doesn't have a carving port.) I had just enough battery to get myself back on the highway, good thing I have good memory, so I was able to figure out my way back from Long Island. It only 4 hours of driving to get back.

I left at 9:50a and was back at 10:45p with 2 stops and 2 food breaks, I probably spent an hour getting prepared and getting gas before I left as well. All that for a carpet and radio harness for one pin which I could gotten at junkyard around here.

  9. What did you use to seal the threads? I recall that Subaru calls for some brown stuff that’s more or less

unobtanium. I’ve got a PCV in a box on a shelf I ought to put in. I had figured on using Teflon tape or maybe green Loctite if I can scare some up.

The GT PCV doesn't screw into the block. It is just help in end by 2 clamps. Before doing the PCV valve, I would look at the block to PCV hose adapter. Both the 126K and 171K mile GT engine I have done, this hose has been cracked.

  10. I’ve got a set of stock GT wheels with Michelin’s on them in the garage at the cabin. If you had any reason to be down around DC or the eastern panhandle of WV at any point, they’d be waiting for you.

Thanks, that is a bit of drive for me. I had a line on set of 2011 GT wheels, but when I asked the owner for pictures (he just had a 20 foot view of them on his Legacy GT he sold), he said they were storage and he take some pictures. I follow up a week later and no response. 2 weeks later after I got back from vacation they were sold.

  11. I went through my engine gasket kit. I couldn't quite figure out all the parts. It is little frustrating because Subaru superseded the engine gasket part number but didn't update the list of parts. I was suppose to be getting the oil control valve gaskets but it didn't come with those. It came with 12 banjo bolt gaskets which it didn't list. I have seven another gasket which I am not quite sure was it is. It might be fuel rail related. I will have to try to match them up by sight when I am putting everything together.

I dropped off the valve seals and locks at the machine shop. I should have the heads back next week.

I thought that I came up with a great idea today for the missing radio pin. My mirror assembly is broken and the power mirror connector's pins looked like my radio connectors pins. I pulled the connector apart and grabbed the pins out of it. I went plug the pin into the radio and it is slightly too big. In looking closer at the radio connector, I can clearly see that someone pried open the retaining flap on the connector at one point. So I am on the right track about the missing wire.

  12. Honda Accords & Toyota Camry Sales are down like the Legacy. It is not just a Subaru Legacy trend. The sedan market size might be down but there are still a lot units purchased. They just aren't selling in the same volume they use to.
