  1. @gathermewool Im not a mechanic, but you could always add distilled water to your battery.

Water level is fine, well above the plates and just below the max level.

Level should always be above the plates. If the battery dies and the level is below the level of the plates, add just enough water to cover the plates, then charge fully. If the plates are covered with water already, charge the battery to full and add, if necessary.

  2. Nice. That's not as high a price as I thought it would be.

I've got nearly 60k on mine and it's starting to slow down (a little to moderate amount). This may be it's last winter. It still passes a load test and one of those small testers shows it's stil GOOD.

I put a smart charger on it weekly to keep it going.

I've got a jump pack in my trunk, just in case. If it fails to start one time I'll be getting a new battery.

  3. Got AAA to replace my battery March of 2020....Tuesday was at the dealer to check the brakes which were fine but battery was bad....Got home and called AAA....45 minutes later they were out installing another battery....Group 25 batteries the tech said aren't a big turnover ...My old one had a date of 1/20 on it.....The new one says its 11/20....First three years free replacement and then two years after that prorated....2016 Legacy Premium 2.5 with 89800 miles.....

How much did that initial battery cost?

Did March battery replace the OEM? What mileage?

  4. Update: Just had the car at the dealer(Subaru of Sherman Oaks CA)..They said the front brake pads are at 8mm and rears at 6mm...I'm at 89,800 miles and now just drive locally as been retired for a year....They did find my AAA series group 25 battery was bad...Was replaced in March 2020 by AAA so called and got a free replacement......Tech from AAA didn't believe it was bad until he tested himself....He did state group series 25 is not a fast mover which could explain how my battery went bad.....Ironic the replaced battery has a sticker of 11/20 on it ......

It sounds like you have plenty of life left on your pads, especially if you're an efficient around-town driver (e.g., coast, plenty of room between cars, etc.) Good for you and your driving style.

I figure AAA guys, if they're smart, will cycle through the older stock first when they're called. I don't know if it's true, but some places claim to top batteries off every so often. I've never once seen a batter pulled from a rack to be charged or touched by a tech, though it could obviously be done in the back, and I'm obviously not staking the place out to find out.

When I bought my last battery I made sure to ask for the newest battery they had and they complied. The time before I didn't and they brought out the dustiest battery I've ever seen in my life. It was more than size months old and the voltage showed only a 50% SOC, so I declined; they eventually brought me a SAT battery.

What also helps the life of the battery is having a smart charger, like Ctek or NOCO, as examples, to maintain the battery while you're not driving.

  5. I'm always happy to help someone who posts, "I've consulted the Owners Manual and/or searched the forum, but I can't find what I'm looking for." On the other hand, if you're too lazy to make even a token effort, I'm inclined to be too lazy to look it up for you.

That's not usually true. You usually get your dig in AND help.

I agree that those of us who feel compelled to ONLY get the dig in should STFU and not post. :)

  6. I played with the auto-headlight setting and the lowest setting "min" actually comes on at dusk. I didn't test exactly when, but it was around 1630 under overcast skies here in CT, which I was pretty impressed with.

I still don't like when they come on while leaving the garage in the middle of the day, so I'll stick with manual operation for now. I might see if my wife's 14 FXT has a lower setting, because she tends to drive with headlights off when they're warranted. I give her zero hard time, because I've got larger fish to fry when it comes to her...like closing all of the damned lids in the house tightly! lol

  7. Delivered our 2015 Legacy to my preferred auto body repair shop yesterday. A kamikaze white-tail deer ran into the left side of the car at dusk shortly before Thanksgiving. My wife was driving. The only visible damage was big dents in both left-side doors and some "bodily fluids" left behind, but the mature doe didn't survive the encounter.

The good news is that our comprehensive insurance will pay (less deductible) to have both left-side doors replaced with new Subaru parts ... to the tune of about $3,500. I was pleasantly surprised that our insurance company didn't dispute the use of new OEM parts, perhaps a benefit of choosing a long-established body shop with a reputation for excellence. (There was a recently-repaired Ferrari 355 visible from the front office when I dropped off our lowly Subaru Legacy.)

Holy moly, that must have shocked (literally) the hell out of you!

I can't believe they're giving you OEM parts. I also got a decent amount of OEM sheet metal when my '08 STI was hit in the front. They say that there was no aftermarket option for cheaper.

    Do the doors come painted?

  8. Doesn't anyone actually read the owner's manual any longer? All of these questions are answered there in detail. Yes, it is a huge manual, but that is because there are so many systems in the vehicle that require explanation so you can take full advantage of these features.

Relax. It's not the Bible. Besides, posts here are dwindling (nothing new there), so if you keep pushing away new posters you're just doing the site harm.

With that said, it being a huge manual (really a set of manuals, including the main owner's manual) has been mostly offset since it's available online for download and searchable.

@ammcinnis I looked up and found the auto on/off headlight setting in the OM (thanks!), but can't find any setting regarding the interior dimmer with a quick search. Must just be a locked-in setpoint.

  9. That's the intended purpose of DRLs. You are aware, I hope, that there is a 3-step ambient light sensitivity adjustment for the auto low beams.

I did not know that (or maybe I did when I read the OM 3 years ago and then forgot) - I'll reacquaint myself with it and do some testing.

Regardless, I want my LB headlights on more frequently than most people and likely more often than the system is sensitive to. For instance, my drive to work is East during the morning and west during the evening. At certain times of year that's nearly blinding. There're also days where it's drizzling or snowing on bright enough days where the system might not react. I like to have my LB's on in those instances, to make myself more than just a shadow in someone's mirrors.

What I'd like to know, is whether the auto LB's is tied to the when the dash lights dim. If it is, then I can tell you right now that the setting is not to my liking.

  10. The sound is disconcerting. I still stop and listen every time I'm in the garage and it randomly begins.

With that said the first time I heard it I Googled it and found an appropriate answer. Just sayin'!

How's the weather out there these days? The worst ice I've ever seen in my life was just east of MO, in IL. Heading to St Louis way back when I was completely blown away at how many cars had slipped off the side of the road, as well as how many were on their sides or upside down.

  11. I don't get how cleaning the resistor would do anything at all. Resistors have a protective coating and won't change resistance based on external dirt. The only thing I can think of is if the coating of dirt bypasses the resistor and is even slightly conductive, which would change the overall, parallel-path resistance.
