  1. Not hard, the center diff. swap can be done with out dropping the tranny. Need 1, DCCD, about $1700 new, 1, DCCD controller, about $350+ new & drill holes & sealant for the DCCD controller wires that goes through the tranny case.

  2. Slide hammer works fine without damage to the CV joint or to the diff-side. I replaced 4 front wheel bearings & 2 rear wheel bearings over the 197+ miles on my GT. The only thing I would add, is do not use slide hammer to remove wheel bearings if not replacing the wheel bearings. I have pulled the hub right out of the bearing assembly twice out of the 6 wheel bearings I have replaced.

Pics. of my slide hammer I put together. I used a old hub & adapted to my slide hammer.

  3. From FBP site, Important Note's Regarding Warranty Info:

When you purchase a VF52 Turbo from Fred Beans Parts - it comes with a 12 month / unlimited mileage warranty. In order for your warranty to be valid & honored with Fred Beans Parts, you must also purchase & install the two oil feed lines & screen bolts on the same invoice. If you do not order & install these parts, we have no recourse with Subaru to honor the warranty.

    http://www.fredbeansparts.com/index.php/subaru-legacy-gt-vf52-turbocharger.html

Good rule is to change the oil line when you replace the turbo. Check with the vendor that sell the turbo. Which oil line they recommend, OEM or After Market (like the IP&T).

  4. I snapped off the tap that clamps around the ball joint. It was a Sat. & winter time (roadster doesn't play in the salt & snow). Need the car for work Mon. I beveled the weld joint & welded the joint all the way around. The using a grinder, finger file & a dermal to do the machine work by hand. Drove on it for 2wks , 1200 miles, why'll waiting on new part & time to install it.

  5. "2006+ STI 6MT has a 1:1 stepper center differential which allows you to use your Stock R160 on the 07+ cars"

Does this mean I will not be able to use my stock rear diff on my 05? I plan on going with the 06+ STi trans.

No,need 3.54:1 rear diff. From thread below:

    http://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php/nsfws-6mt-swap-thread-143520.html

There are two main recipes for 6MT swaps. They key difference between them is the rear diff ratio. Both use 3.9:1 front differentials, but the later transmissions have a 1.1:1 ratio on the rear output shaft, which requires a 3.54:1 rear diff.

    Recipe A - 3.90 rear diff

Transmission options: 04/05 STI*, or 08/09 Spec B

Rear diff options: 04/05 STI, possibly 07-09 Legacy GT R160**

Rear axles: 07-09 Spec B (axles 28421AG03B, axle seals 806732200)

    Front axles: Regular LGT***

Driveshaft: use a Spec B driveshaft, and replace the differential's input flange with the R160 flange.

(The Spec B R180 has an R160 input yoke, but is only available in 3.54:1.)

    Recipe B - 3.54:1 rear diff

Transmission options: 06+ STI (I don't know what the upper bound is, but unclemat used an 08)

    Rear diff options: 02-05 WRX R160, 07-09 Spec B R180*****

Rear axles: Regular LGT with R160, Spec B axles with R180.

    Front axles: Regular LGT

    Driveshaft: Spec B****

Note that there are two versions of the Spec B 6MT transmission and they have different final drive ratios.

    * Some 04 STI transmissions need minor changes for LGT front axles - click here for more info.

** I have conflicting information about which Legacy GT R160s have which ratios.

*** 04 6MT will need new axle seals to use LGT front axles. (Part numbers here)

    **** Per Z0rro, an 05-09 4EAT driveshaft can substitute for a Spec B driveshaft.

***** Cars101.com says the 08/09 Spec B uses a 3.9 final drive, however that apparently includes the 1.1 reduction in the transmission.

Small parts: (needed for either recipe)

Please confirm these part numbers for your particular transmission.

Most of these are just what I used for my 05 STI 6MT swap; later years may have differences.

  6. It will a depend on how much & how big are the metal shaving, if anyare in your oil. Thing to check & clean or replace; turbo & ACVS oil feed lines, oil cooler (is what your oil filter spins on) & drop oil pan & inspect for metal shaving or bigger peaces,( bigger peaces = new short block is in your future).

This is what I do when putting new machined parts on a motor. That's part of the oiling system , (turbo, heads & new short block).

Start motor, check for leaks with new oil & oil filter, until it reaches operating temperature & change oil & filter. Then change oil & oil filter at 500 miles, 1500 miles & at 3000 miles. After that oil & oil filter change at you reg. OCI.

This as always served me well.

    Mike

  7. Your over thinking this a little. Your 06-07 diff in either option is in this part of your post. 07-09 Spec B R180***** is a Torson rear diff. Just like the STi's. It don't matter the year of the diff. As long as it as the right gear ratio. Just pick any R160 or R180 with 3.54 gearing.

Driveshaft: 07-09 Spec B**** 05^ 4eat & you can go with a custom drive shaft.

  8. Oil history from day1:

New. SOA filter & oil 4000 miles

    1st. oil & filter change till 30k, Mobil1, 5w-30 every 6000 miles \ Fram oil

    filter every 3000 miles.

Amsoil 0w-30 SSO and Amsoil Ea oil filter, Ea15k13 oil filter at 30k-73k .

At 73K, my filtration I use.http://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php/get-your-oil-filtration-down-2-microns-81741.html My oil system now is 7qt. I add 2-4qts over the 15k OCI.

Oil consummation hasn't change sense car was new.

Most off the shelf oil filter, filter down between 20 & 40 microns. Amsoil full-flow oil filter is 15 microns & Amsoil By-Pass oil filter is 2 microns.

This filtration system add 2qts. of oil to you motor. Which help keep the oil cooler.

    My GT mileage; over 314k

My G\F's 05 WRX (Totaled) use same oil & OCI, but uses 1 single spin-on, Ea15k13 oil filter. The WRX as over 150k. I add 2-4qts over the 15k OCI.

Oil consummation hasn't change sense car was new.

My 07 Pontiac Solstice GXP, 2.0L DI turbo charge motor, Same oil & OCI, but No Ea filter is available. I use a WIX filter. Change oil filter only every 5k. At 91k, Amsoil now as Ea-oil filter. No oil consummation over it's 15k OCI. GXP as almost 149k.

In short, check you oil level often & top as needed. Use oil & filter that will protect for the OCI your running. OA's is the only way you know that your oil & filter is up for the challenge. After that IMO no OA's are needed.

  9. you are confusing me mike

    :rolleyes::spin::spin:;)

YOU; paintpollz Mike, would you recommend 0w-30 w/o SSO and Ea filters w/o the bypass? Year around, In my location, at 6-8k OCI?

Did I misunderstand you. You wanted my recommend 0w-30 without SSO ( not running, Signature Series Oil. Amsoil top self oil) and Ea filters without running the bypass? Year around, In my location, at 6-8k OCI?

I replied; No, because I have no real world experience with any other 0w30 motor oils. Answer to other 0w-30 oils

My G\F's 05 WRX use same oil & OCI, but uses 1 single spin-on, Ea15k13 oil filter. The WRX as over 140k. I add 2-4qts over the 15k OCI. Answer to Ea filters without running the bypass? Year around, In my location, at 6-8k OCI?

This is what I have told Max Capacity & others. That wanted or thinking about running Extends Drain Intervals.

If your not going to run Extends Drain Intervals. (IMO at least 7.5k) Them IMO you can use cheaper oil & filter to protect up to Subaru's 3750 OCI.

What you do is up to you, at your own risk. If you do Extends Drain Intervals (at least 7.5k) I would do your OA's at your current OCI. Up to you plan on changing you oil & filter. For the 1st oil change. After you AO's come back "Good for Continuous Use" up to whatever OCI you decide, under 15K. Then all you have to do is to watch for oil usage. Remember that Amsoil only Recommends extended drain intervals with their oils. If use with their EA oil filters one is available.

    Mike _______________________________________________________

It would be perfect to get the car to drink about a quart between that OCI. Maybe adjust OCI a little?

i understand doing my OAs is important. assuming they are similar to yours, I feel like w/o the bypass, running ams 0w30 SSO /w Ea filters and 7-8k OCI would probably be ok.

but then again, I need to do the OAs to really be sure. If you could confirm, you recommend doing one at 3750, and again at 7500 intervals?

    thanks,

    kevin

Yes, that's why I told you about my G|F's 05 WRX.

Every car is a different. Do OA's for your car.

My G\F's 05 WRX use same oil (0w-30, SSO)& OCI,(15k) but uses 1 single spin-on, Ea15k13 oil filter. The WRX as over 140k. I add 2-4qts over the 15k OCI.

Did I help clear up your confusion on what I typed?

    Mike
