CV joint ?

RaGe

Recommended Posts

so i am having some noises come from my front drivers side wheel area. Sounds like you would throw a penny in a pop can and shake the hell out of it when i turn. Turned the wheels and found this. I searched a bit before i put this up but was unable to find pictures. Just the boot coming off would it make these noises that i am talking about or is it a shot CV joint? the boot doesnt look ripped or anything like that. the car has 55K on it so i am waiting to call the dealership when they open up at 8am so i can hurry up and make an appt before i hit the 60K mark. any opinions here?

EDIT: Just spoke with the service dept. Said something about it may not be covered under the warrenty. i can understand the boot not being covered but is the actaull CV joint covered under the 60K?

Picture quality isnt that good. But i wasnt going to crawl all the way up under neath it to take a picture. And for everything else,,,, i just got this car so work with me a bit as far as the rust goes. i am going to replace alot of parts. just give me time.;)

also, would it be best to put the stock wheels and tires back on when taking this to the dealer to get fixed?

Don't take any chances and put the stock wheels back on. It looks like on of the bands that holds the CV joint boot is gone. Chances are the CV joint itself is bad from lack of lubrication. The boot is what holds this lubrication in.

These arn't that hard to replace yourself. Just buy the entire 1/2 shaft (~$250 IIRC) and put that sucker in. Replacing just the CV is a PITA and not worth the savings.

PM Opie he will know if its covered under the 60k.

+1 Half shafts are easy to replace. If you get denied, wont take long to do it yourself.

I had called SOA this morning due to what the service manager said when i made this appt this morning as well. he said that if the boot is damaged they wont repair it under warrenty ( which i read on another post ). So called SOA to verify this. And she took my name and number and said that she would like to follow up with this. i dont know what that was all about. ?

But on another note. it appears the boot isnt damaged, that the clamp holding it on just dissapeared. So with this being the case would that qualify under warrenty repair? The boot isnt damaged. LOL.

i sent opie a P.M and just awaiting for his response on his opinion.

Technically the CV Joint IS covered until 60,000 miles, if it's making noise, it's bad.

Since the band is missing the typical dealer would probably claim that since all the grease came out that made the joint fail and since the calmp is only covered until 36k it's not a warranty repair.

If this occurs call SOA (1-800-SUBARU-3) while you are at the dealer and calmly tell them that this is unacceptable, and that the CV joint should be repaired as a warranty matter, yada, yada. The y will usually tell the dealership to go ahead and reapir it.

Or if you have a good dealer, they will just fix it for you anyways (like I would! :) )

say that lady said she would keep notes on this from SOA. but I sure in hell didnt make that clamp come off. And realistically speaking if something hit this clamp to make it come off you would think i would have noticed it. No potholes/rodents/ little furry bunnys/or racoons here. Not even a bird despite there attempt to take me out. But you would think that i would have noticed it if indeed i did hit something. But i am just a little worried, that if i get up there they will try to stick me. i called a buddy of mine at the dealership in which i will be taking it in. i believe he is the sales manager or somthing along that line. So he is talking with the service manager. Hopefully that will do something as well. i would say though that it is a fine line. Because the boot isnt damaged but the clamp possibly is what caused all of this. This will most likely get interesting. I have a feeling they are going to give me the run-a-round.

well i put the stockers back on. I go up thursday at 8 am. i am on the phone with the dealership in which i purchased the car just in case SOA or the dealership tha ti am taking it to doesnt want to pay for it. i am going to take the SOA number with me just in case. But just out of curiosity how much does this cost to fix if warrenty doesnt cover it at the dealership. not looking for me doing it myself but rather how much it would cost for them to do it?

feel like i am talking to myself. Which i dont mind. LOL. Just an update. Though i havent taken the car up to the dealer yet, i talked to the dealership in which i bought the car from. They are going to pay for everything. My brakes and CV joint if thats what it is. I might have shaft damage but they dont know until they get a chance to look at it. But they are going to pay for it regaurdless. it made me feel alot better i tell you that. Just thought that i would share the news with either you or myself. i might read it hear in a second and say well that sounds good RaGe. because i can. because i like to talk to myself. aight. time for some pills.

well things just got more complicated. it seems that i need a whole new shaft. being that they dont just make a CV joint for an 05 ( i guess, i dont really know ) they have to order the whole shaft. So in the meantime i am driving a rental car. Friggin honDIE. sonada that is. Thing is slower than a sever year itch. WHeres boost when you need it? You hit the gas and are left wondering if the damn thing is even going to go or not. i dont know how people buy these things.

So anyways they put a rush in on it. the old dealer didnt seems so thrilled to help me out anymore when i told him the shaft was around $900. LOL. i guess it was pretty bad off. i dont like leaving my girl up there.

I said i can do better you can have it. She brought the keys back in within two minutes and said the honDIE is the GH3Y.

price is my bad. he was figuring in the brakes and stuff too. i think the total price on the shaft was like 3 or 4 something plus labor. i think he is counting in the rental car too. LOL. but i remember him saying something that he couldnt rebuilt it because it was too far off. and that he couldnt just order the CV joint. said it comes as the shaft and CV joint as one if that makes any sense. i am going off of 0 hrs of sleep.

honestly though i dont care if he is full of crap or not. he can be filled full of piss for all i care. as long as my car gets fixed and i am not paying for it is all that i care about right now. i am driving a crapmobile right now. I will keep you all posted though. Said he would give me a call back later today. maybe i can ask him what it needed again. I know when ever i tried searching for a half shaft i could only find them up to an 04. anything past that i wasnt having much luck.

yeah just got off of the phone with him. it is the half shaft. and total was $600 something. But that rental car was also included along with labor. That and i am not paying for it. so i think i made out aight. The only reason i posted this was because i couldnt find a picture of one similar to mine ( boot that is. ). so i was hoping by me putting this up it might help others in case something like this would happen. I will post up a final once i get the car back.

  • 9 months later...

My right front inner boot ripped on me, I bought an aftermarket axle and attempted to install it after work to find out it didn't fit and had to reinstall the original. :(

So another day, I took the bad axle out and took it to a Rear-End/Drivetrain specialist and they completely rebuilt my stock axle for 50 bucks :)
